I had to Google some of the things mentioned because where I live (Western Canada), most of our fish is coldwater fish that _allegedly_ doesn't naturally harbour dangerous bacteria for reasons that I can't remember(something to do with the water being too cold and the fish's resulting unique metabolism), and for parasites, all fish is flash frozen on the boat so that risk is neutralized before it ever even makes it to shore. It never even occurred to me all the nasty other things that can come with other types of fish - and a fish market itself is a whole other beast. 😳

No kidding... Some of us don't spend our lives obsessing over every possible germ and swimming in hand-sanitizer. Believe it or not, there are those of us who still have a functioning immune system. I know, it's a shock, but... Has to be close to 30 years since I last had an infection that needed anything more complicated than a smear of neosporin or a week of E-mycin or SMZ/TMP, and I don't exactly hide in a "clean room". Not real practical when you make your living working "up close and personal" with livestock. Exposes you to all sorts of pathogens - that mostly curl up and die when faced with a decent immune system that's regularly challenged. (unlike office-folk, who, or at least, so it seems, somehow manage to catch every bug in the book by doing little or nothing but watching from a third floor window as somebody on the sidewalk below sneezes)

Infectious Disease is like a Pre Med taking the first class that mentions causative agents. My Invertebrate Anatomy class back in 64 was essentially know everything in Craig and Faust's Clinical Parasitology. Several months of not eating anything unless you've cooked it well done or boiled it until you can be sure it's dead. Shudder every time you see a baby play with a dog.

Man, I saw a squirrel once with his eyes swollen shut from something. I tried to catch it to give it to a wildlife rescue but even blind squirrels are… squirrely. I got bit by it (I was trying to use a box) and my immediate reaction was “I’M GOING TO DIE FROM RABIES.” The ER assured me that rodents rarely carry rabies (which I think is bullshit because I know rats eat meat), gave me a tetanus shot, a scan for my finger (because in my haste I slammed the door on my hand), and sent me on my way.
