Review of the Inflammatory Response. The Lecture includes a review of what factors can initiate the Inflammatory Response (including: infection, trauma & hypersensitivity reactions), the chemical mediators of Inflammation (including: kinins, prostaglandins, histamine, leukotrienes & interleukins), their mechanisms of action (localized vasodilation, increased capillary permeability, activation of nocciceptors, chemotaxis, & action on the Thermoregulatory Reflex Center in Hypothalamus), the cardinal signs of inflammation (including: erythema, localized swelling, pain & fever) and the benefit each plays in promoting healing. The Lecture also presents the initiation of fever (by the raising of the Thermostatic "set-point") and the breaking of the fever. The Lecture also makes reference to the mechanism of action of anti-pyretic drugs (such as aspirin, acetaminophen & ibuprofen as COX Inhibitors) and the use of NSAIDs and antihistamines against inflammation.
