Review of the Inflammatory Response. The Lecture includes a review of what factors can initiate the Inflammatory Response (including: infection, trauma & hypersensitivity reactions), the chemical mediators of Inflammation (including: kinins, prostaglandins, histamine, leukotrienes & interleukins), their mechanisms of action (localized vasodilation, increased capillary permeability, activation of nocciceptors, chemotaxis, & action on the Thermoregulatory Reflex Center in Hypothalamus), the cardinal signs of inflammation (including: erythema, localized swelling, pain & fever) and the benefit each plays in promoting healing. The Lecture also presents the initiation of fever (by the raising of the Thermostatic "set-point") and the breaking of the fever. The Lecture also makes reference to the mechanism of action of anti-pyretic drugs (such as aspirin, acetaminophen & ibuprofen as COX Inhibitors) and the use of NSAIDs and antihistamines against inflammation.

To Daldin Soph 1. When is a body unable to provide a sustained imuno-response? When the body is severely compromised ie. malnourished or dehydrated. Hence, the reason why we encourage good nutrition and hydration due to body's increased demand. 2. Can a person with cancer expect inflammatory response? If not, why not? YES, well most of the time. There are some cases when an inflammatory response is very weak or none at all until Ca has reached it's late stage.

It is an excellent presentation, I have following questions if anyone can answer. 1. Immune response seems to take up lot of energy/intensity. When is a body unable to provide a sustained imuno-response? 2. Can a person with cancer expect inflammatory response? If not, why not? 3. What are the conditions needed for above (q.2) to happen? 4. If someone takes anti-biotics during a viral infection will he not be actually weakening the only defense mechanism that is available (body's defenses)?

Another great talk! Side note: though the inflammatory process is critical in healing, it is not without negative effects once it develops into a SIRS response. SIRS has been associated with increased mortalities: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11038081 Another great example of how too much of a good thing can spin out of control and have a deleterious effect.

To Daldin Soph 3. What are the conditions needed for above (q.2) to happen? When there are cells destruction or breaks in the cellular matrix due to Ca cells spreading and taking over, inflammatory response is triggered.

Most ADULTS with a fever of LESS than 102 F take acetamnophen or ibuprofen to reduce pain (analgesic effect) rather than to reduce fever. This MAY be impairing the body's Immune Response. CERTAINLY, with fevers of 102 F or higher, it MAY be appropriate to take these drugs to reduce fever.

To Daldin Soph 4. If someone takes anti-biotics during a viral infection will he not be actually weakening the only defense mechanism that is available (body's defenses)? Anti-biotics shouldn't be taken for viral infection as what Professor Fink mentioned: it's not a living thing. A viral infection is self-limiting and it's up to the body's defense mechanism to fight it off. However, Anti-biotics can be taken for prophylaxis to an impending bacterial infection.
