Every time you start scrolling on social media you’ll eventually see an influencer with a seemingly better life than you. With their 5am morning routines where they harvest wheat from their organic garden and cook cereal from scratch - it’s not surprising to see so many of them taking their private jet to go to the beach. But maybe not all is what it seems when faking your wealth is a real possibility behind a screen. There’s so much pressure with beauty standards, your personal image, and an obsession with luxury goods that’s causing influencers to go broke trying to look rich. East Asian looksmaxxing is when your financial success is directly tied to your appearance - you ever heard of someone taking out a loan to buy a luxury bag for clout? It's insane out here #edvasian

Yep, kinda the same vibe as ruining your mental health for the grind just to pretend to be happy, or being controlling/abusive over your family to try to feel like you have a loving family. Or getting a certain plastic surgery to look fit even though it only limits your ability to move naturally. Man, humanity is weird lol

It's a sincere belief in "fake it till you make it", that people from the upper echelons of society would want to associate with you if they see you with a Gucci purse and not Target bag, or with a Rolex watch instead of Casio. What these people misunderstand is that just showing off wealth does not impress those people; your skill in acquiring it does. Mark the Lizard didn't buy Oculus Rift for 2 bil because Palmer Luckey was posting himself in Armani three-piece suits.

I do enjoy having physical books so much more, but to compromise, I pay $10 for a kindle membership and out of the 13 books I’ve read in the last two months, only two were not available on there. There is always a cheaper way. People are too comfortable getting everything new and unused.
@SHADEdonatesGOODvibes
@SHADEdonatesGOODvibes 3 ай бұрын
Reading isn't an expensive hobby, but collecting books certainly is. I have spent quite a bit of money buying physical copies of my favourite book series because I like the feeling of having the full set on my bookshelf. Technically, people who say it is expensive aren't wrong, but reading is an outlier, in my opinion, given that some books can actually be quite expensive (for books at least), but some aren't, and obviously libraries exist, as you said. And booktok is a little bit crazy so I take everything people say on there to be an extreme version of what they are actually talking about.
@nbucwa6621
@nbucwa6621 3 ай бұрын
2nd hand bookstores are so expensive now where I am and the library is no longer well supplied since covid (funding ig) and closes on weekends and also closes before i get home from work on weekdays so yeah reading was becoming an expensive hobby for me. Now I just read online wherever I can find stuff free. That said it's probably the aesthetics of reading on booktok that are so expensive rather than actual reading. I don't see them showing off their battered old second hand copies or loaned books on booktok.
@jade5379
@jade5379 3 ай бұрын
@@nbucwa6621And I agree. Funding for libraries suck, and a lot of libraries that I go to don't have as many books. If more people gave them attention, like on booktok, I wonder if that would help some. Does your library have an app? Currently I use three different library apps with two different libraries lol. I like ebooks, so I try to make the most of it, but I don't know how widely available it is.

What I find funny is that all those branded items don't make them look rich, but poor and tacky. Prada, Gucci and so on are brands that are made for middle class people who want to show off to others. But those who are actually really rich, like old money folks, usually don't wear something that has a brand name plastered all over it. They know they're rich, they don't need to show that off to anyone. These influencers would be better off investing their money in good quality custom made outfits that actually fit them well and will last for several years.

It was always there. The reason why kids could sometimes walk in almost rags but always had a smartphone was basically unwilling to get excluded from YET ANOTHER sphere of life. Not just to fit in, while it also plays a major role, but also not to have that mental strain "I am worse than everyone else". It is stupid, but there is someghing about that mental comfort you are not even more excluded... And I didn't notice or name it until we had lectures in my university how exclusion is one of the major society problems. I am an adult, but due to my situation I still feel that in the back of my head when I see at the Local Game Shop that people can easily spend at the whim, while I have to rethink for a week if I want something or not. And while I am fully aware no one is going to laugh it off, there is that innate... Not even fear but discomfort.

This is how I feel with hiking. I don't like gatekeeping, but I'm a pretty avid hiker and I can't tell you how many times I've seen obvious non-serious hikers have super-expensive gear. You don't need $300+ boots to walk on a simple 4 mile out-and-back trail, nor do you need a $250 bag from Osprey to put one water bottle and a couple granola bars in. Both pickleball and hiking are cheap hobbies for most. Buy basic fundamentals and go. Pickleball girl could have just purchased a paddle and joined a rec league, but no, she needed overproced clothing, expensive lessons (which she could have just learned from others in a local league), and a fancy high-end country club membership. For her to leave work and move to play shows that she does have money and can afford to do so, but she was totally humble-bragging. Definitely agree with the comment about finding good stuff at secondhand stores, though.

The walmart cup actually looks better than stanley. As bad as it sounds, I wouldn't buy my kid a stanley cup just to fit in. If at most is all they're saying is "that's not a stanley neenah neenah", no obstruction to their learning, no physical assaults, I would tell my kid to ignore those kids. You fail as a parent if you keep doing everything for your kid to fit in, what would you do when your kid gets bullied for TRYING to fit in because that can happen? Your money was just wasted on a stanley cup instead of helping to build you're child's self-confidence and resilience. I grew up never fitting in, people throwing deisgner product bullshit at me never worked because I was engrossed with myself, they slowly moved to oher area of bullying that did work, but the shallow ones never did.

I work at a museum and saw a group of children quickly run through our Gisella Loeffler art exhibit. Loeffler painted stunning whimsical and childlike colorist works that one would think children would love and be drawn to. Lots of cartoon like figures... Later in the day, I saw the same children in a fashion exhibit that had mannequins in clothing from some of the older ladies who were "movers and shakers" in our local region. The clothes were rather plain except one bright salmon colored ski outfit. The children were in absolute awe and were freaking out, reading all the name brands out loud to each other. The spent a great deal of time standing at each mannequin. The children were like 8 years old. It was really weird. I wouldn't have cared about brands or little old lady clothes at 8.

As an American who lives in Korea it’s wild riding the public transportation in Seoul sometimes. I see a lot of women with very expensive handbags and big luxury shopping bags riding the bus and subway. It is also very common for Korean men to have very expensive luxury vehicles but live in a very small cheap apartment in a “poor” neighborhood. My friend told me some guys would rather sleep in their car just to maintain their image. Like even dating apps like tinder are very deceiving. Profiles usually have photos of beautiful views, expensive food, wearing expensive clothes/jewelry, and them driving expensive vehicles. Because of all of this the luxury counterfeit business is actually sooooo good you can’t even tell it’s fake sometimes. Usually Koreans buy the items if they came from China because China is the leading producer. At this rate I feel like every country is going through some weird dystopia. 🥴

Just like how I also mentioned my Korean friends told me many Koreans also buy fancy cars but live in them or live in a very cheap place to keep payments on their cars to maintain their status. Sometimes you don’t know what’s real or what’s fake and that’s why I also mentioned how big luxury counterfeit is in Asia. I can never know someone’s actual economical situation just by looking at them. I personally would get easily fooled and think they’re rich regardless because I don’t come from money but sometimes we, myself included, have to remind ourselves it can all be a façade. : ) I’m sorry if I may have made it seem like I think riding public transportation is only used by people for lower economic classes, I should have provided more details. Thank you for reporting on all of this, so I'm not completely out of touch with what's happening in the world, but also saving me from having to actually be part of it haha. I love your dry humor, keep it up with the great content!

I work in retail and this year the sporting goods section is now stocking pickle ball supplies. Some of the paddles the store stocks are literally over $100, even my supervisor didn't believe me when I told him how much some of the paddles cost. We had a good laugh about it but something about it still doesn't sit well with me.

My biggest problem with luxury items besides the price is the fact that I think they are ugly. I cannot get enthused about purchasing something, especially if I already know the markup because I've worked in certain retail industries, if the item is ugly in my opinion. I suppose that it keeps me safe since they all keep making these mostly disinteresting sometimes downright ugly things. I have absolutely no motivation to buy them. When I have friends who do buy these things and they're so excited about them I just avoid talking about it because I don't want to tell them how ugly I think they're super expensive items are. Bland boring ugly basic.... So many words that do not equate to paying exorbitant amounts of money to own said item 🤦‍♀️

@dubblebubbletoilandtrouble6646 3 ай бұрын
My thing isn't so much how they look, that's subjective (although I kind of agree with you on some of them lol), it's more that the luxury stuff is being more and more cheaply made and the only thing differentiating it is the price tag. Like if it was of astronomical quality and I'd never have to replace that item ever again, I could kind of see the allure. But often the items aren't of any better quality or construction than the stuff priced at a middle-of-the-road level. Not to mention that if you're buying an item that expensive just because it's the hot item right now, you're not even going to keep it for a long time because you'll be so worried about it "going out of fashion" in like two days.

It's always funny seeing the irony of these people that want to look rich, pretend they have this hustling, productive lifestyle, but then they flaunt themselves wasting insane amounts of money on the dumbest things possible. They'll look down on someone working retail that lives within their means while going online to say stuff like "I spent at least 15k on Pickleball in under a year" as if that isn't a showcase of someone that doesn't know how to budget properly. Girl WTF did you buy that cost that much to play Pickleball? Just throwing money away to chase a fad aesthetic.

If you have money, like real money, you would know that you cannot post on social media because it's a security threat! So all these people posting are definitely poor, or does it to make money, like influencers. Also, most people don't look down on the working class, but they are oblivious to thwir struggles. 🤷‍♀️

It is very funny (depressing) when the same people who throw out thousands of dollars on the most inane shit ever turn around and accuse poor people of being poor because they don't know how to manage their money. Sorry Mariayah, spending 4.50 on a weekly slice of cheese cake is not why this person is poor...its because minimum wage has not kept up with inflation for the past 50 years! Maybe instead of eating cheese cake, I should eat the rich.
@mismismism

@@SilverDragonJay That's the worst, you'll see rich people online not only not hustling or doing anything productive, while accusing poor people of not being productive enough, and then judging them for using any money on anything but necessities while they waste more than these people make in almost year on the most ridiculous stuff like $15,000 on Pickleball somehow. It's like no, the problem is this fake aspirational B.S. throwing money away so the rich get richer barely doing anything, the poor stay poor and the influencers sell a fake hustle culture by putting themselves in debt for aesthetics to pretend to have money lol. It's so dumb the more you think about it.

Man, this reminds me of my cousin so much. He's really into the influencer lifestyle and basically carries a tripod and a cam whenever he goes out. If we go to restaurants he would intrude people sitting alone just to take shots of the food they are eating in different angles (he does this until someone gets angry and complains to the manager, he only got kicked out twice) , run midway to the parking lot do the same with any expensive cars there all the while looking for fellow influences and asking them for a collab. He found some influencer buddies like this and they regularly rent out cars, luxury items to make a review and post it on social media. Bro even has like 80% of his salary taken away by his parents (you can guess why) and still does shiz like this

Dutch people get good deals for little money and if you compliment them on their clothes and they got a good deal on them, they will reply with; Thanks, I got it for 3 euros" or "Thanks, I got it from my brother/aunt/etc." A.k.a. it is extra nice, because it did not even cost extra money.
