That was my first thought! It’s definitely intentional, they are warming u up to the idea of being institutionalized every day.

But most nyc projects were built from 1945-1965 and were majority white. They were built to create more affordable housing especially for those coming home from WW2. They didn’t become bad/crime ridden until the 1970s/80s with the Heroin and then crack epidemics. There was never intent to institutionalize anyone. Shit the point is to give people affordable housing so they can save and move up in life. Instead people take advantage and just pass it down to the next generation smh.

@M C Wait, so the label literally controls EVERYTHING? It's all starting to come together. In the 80's and 90's, artists relied and depended on a label because of the money they were able to give the artist upfront, not to mention the promo they were going to get; at that time of course. In this day and age, a lot of artists are still depending on a label, but because of the access we have with social media and other platforms, technically, an artist can still do it the independent route (especially in the times we are in now with the internet and networking), but they choose not to why? Anyone reading this (of course you as well @M C), am I right so far or am I missing something?

Titus Sassole there are pros and cons to being independent and being signed. If you get a record deal, you usually get a nice signing bonus. If you’re really hot and labels really want you, it could be tens of millions of dollars (it’s rare but happens), and the label uses their resources to professionally record an album, distributes your music, sets up tours, maybe get you the hot features on your album, and makes sure your singles are played hourly on the radio. The downside is that they get a piece of everything and it your album doesn’t sell you may actually owe them money that they invested in your album. Artists often also ask for advances on their money (money from future album sales), which puts you in an even worse financial situation if you don’t sell. The label also probably owns the rights to your music unless again you are really hot and negotiated your rights in your contract (which is rare these days I believe). If you’re independent, no one is booking your tours, getting you features, marketing you, you probably aren’t going to get radio play, you need to find a way to distribute your album (not as big of a deal now with streaming). If you don’t sell, you don’t sell but it’s on you and no one else. In short, if you get a deal, you have the industry backing you. If you sell and become the next big artist, it’s probably worth it. If you’re not hot, or the label decides it’s not a good time to release your album, they might just shelve it and you’re shit out of luck. Sometimes labels break up and artists are left in this situation as well. If you’re independent and get that buzz and blow, all the money is yours and you have the freedom to do what you want to do. If you know how to produce a professional album and do your thing, it’s also not a bad situation.
