Ingemisco is from the Requiem Mass composed by Giuseppe Verdi (1813 to 1901).
0:00 Enrico Caruso 7th Jan 1915
4:21 Jussi Bjorling 12th Oct 1938
8:29 Franco Corelli 1963
12:50 Luciano Pavarotti 1980?
I uploaded separately another nice recording of this piece by Beniamino Gigli and if you wanted to watch that video the link to it is • Beniamino Gigli : Inge...
If you are comparing the recordings please remember that Caruso's was made by purely mechanical means,10 years years before the use of microphones or electrical equipment of any sort. The accompaniment was by a small group of studio musicians rather than a large orchestra
I have tried to get the best possible audio quality from the Caruso and Bjorling recordings but the Corelli and Pavarotti are, of course relatively modern stereo recordings.
Just to give a "live" effect and a smooth transition between tracks, I have added applause.

Bjorling owns this for sure. Listen to the middle section starting at around 6:50. The soft dynamics at this moment are especially outstanding. His last studio recording was the entire Requiem & he was still in magnificent form. I like Corelli’s rendition with musical reservations. His LIVE performance, & his only complete Verdi Requiem, from 1967 is a more polished piece of singing.

Just a couple of comments: of course, Jussi B. recorded the complete Verdi Requiem in 1960 and the Ingemisco there is much different as well as recorded in Stereo; I love them both, and for me the versions by diStefano, Pavarotti and others are almost as good! When Bjorling went to Vienna to record his complete Requiem with Fritz Reiner, Leontyne Price et al., his 17-year old daughter daughter went with him and listened to all the sessions. While listening to Jussi record the Ingemisco, she was struck by the idea, "who is this singing? It's so incredibly beautiful!" She knew is voice well, but for a brief interval it seemed more gorgeous than ever! (from the bio. JUSSI).

I watched (and listened to) this video two times in a row, because it offered so much... even distraction! I tried to take in everything at once: the gorgeous singing, the wonderful pictures, the interesting subtitles to the pictures... Well, never mind another click... It‘s hard to tell which rendition I like best... apart from being a matter of personal taste, the four singers have very different voices and different assets... For me personally (just my humble opinion) Jussi gets the top ranking, because his singing is extremely refined, the beauty of a human voice combined with a perfect vocal technique... Most listeners will probably vote for Caruso... Strangely, I always admired him, but gave my heart to other singers... that is, perhaps, because he was put on a pedestal - and that‘s where I see him, way up high, but just a little out of reach... Thank you, Michael, once more you did an incredible job!

The pleasure's all mine Harriet, I'm glad that you like the video. I certainly agree with you about Jussi's wonderful singing but have always loved Caruso and wish that the audio quality on his recordings was equal to the more modern recordings so that a fair comparison could be made. @Michael McGrail Regarding your admiration for Caruso you certainly are in very good company!!! I, too, admire him greatly - it‘s just that pedestal thing that seems to push him away a little - to unreachable heights not only for generations of tenors, but also for „my loving heart“ that wants to embrace its favorite singers fully... It‘s hard to explain myself, would be hard even in a language I‘m more at home with (my native language)... The quality of the Caruso recording has been greatly improved by your considerable skills, which definitely adds even more pleasure for the keen listener... It must have been an impressive experience to actually see and hear the former greats in a live performance...! Alas, the number of those who can claim this is decreasing more and more. It’s so fascinating and entiching to listen to their stories, portrayals, memories... I‘m downright nostalgic, not only when it comes to singers (also movies), most of the singers who are so tremendously popular right now don‘t capture my interest, and I loved to listen to the stories my sadly deceased voice teacher told me about famous singers he met and unforgettable performances he saw. I will miss him until the end of my days... but that‘s an entirely different story and has nothing to do with the wonderful singers we were talking about. Better stop babbling now... As always all the best and kindest regards!!!

@@hrbooksmusic7878 Thanks for your message Harriet, I'm still immersed in the video I mentioned to you. Just about everything is already on KZfaq and I only upload mine if I think they sound at least a little better than those already there. People do tend to put Caruso on a pedestal but from what I've read he seems to have been a nice ordinary person. He was a good friend of John McCormack who, like most tenors at the time I suppose, aspired to be another Caruso. When they met one day McCormack said to Caruso "How is the world's greatest tenor today" and in reply Caruso said "Since when did McCormack become a baritone". I've liked the old singers and musicians since I was young but in those days it seemed reasonably normal as they were still generally popular and played on the radio, unlike today. That's enough for now, my typing finger has had enough, All the best, Michael.
@hrbooksmusic7878
@hrbooksmusic7878 3 жыл бұрын
@Michael McGrail First of all, there‘s a heartfelt „get well soon“ for your typing finger... and then, of course, many thanks for all the efforts it made just to come up with such a nice and detailed answer... About this pedestal thing again: I never thought that Caruso put himself - or saw himself - up there! I read his biography (the one his wife Dorothy wrote) two or three times, when I was younger... much younger, actually... and I loved it! So in my imagination he was very down-to-earth, very likable, and blessed with a great sense of humor. This pedestal image came up when I realized that for quite a lot of music lovers he became the untouchable idol, that these fans immediately shouted „blasphemy“ as soon as anyone dared to admit that for whatever reason they preferred another tenor. Therefore my sincere apologies go to Mr Caruso, together with my deepest respect, because it‘s not his fault at all that somehow, someday, I started to feel a little estranged... I loved this little episode about Caruso and McCormack. Judging from the biography, this just sounds - and feels - like him. Caruso. An amiable man, not doubt. And a hell of a good singer! Now I look forward to your next video!!! I‘m sure it will turn out fine! So don‘t worry! You have a knack for this sort of thing! Even if it takes a little longer, in the end you‘ll come out with the best quality ever for the recordings you are working on! 🎼🎵🎶🎶🎶 Besides all the work: Have a wonderful evening! Best regards!!!

Michael it is interesting that in this INGEMISCO there is both a similarity in timbre & interpretative approach between Bjorling & Caruso. This was not usually apparent to me in other examples from their respective Repertoire although it was well known how much the former revered the latter & perhaps consciously or not even occasionally might have SLIGHTLY sought to emulate the great Neapolitan. It was also upon first hearing Caruso’s rendition of the Tosti gem L’ALBA SEPARA DALLA LUCE L’OMBRA that Jussi was so taken with this song that he immediately set out to learn it. Whatever imitation might have been a motivation for this was of negligible significance since both tenors sing it magnificently but with different results. In this piece the contrast between Caruso’s developing full spinto sound & Jussi’s more lyric voice is more noticeable IMO. Returning to the INGEMISCO here, this may be the particular 1938 recording I was referring to. At about the 2 minute & 32 second point is the magical pianissimo moment I had mentioned earlier. There are I believe 2 INGEMISCO’s from Jussi from this year.

Thanks for your message Peter.. I love both the Caruso and Bjorling recordings of Ingemisco and I think that apart, of course, from the very different accompaniment and audio quality, they are very similar and it's not surprising that Jussi tried to emulate Enrico. You mention L'alba separa one of my absolute favoutites by both Caruso and Bjorling, it's a wonderful song and both do it full justice. I was doing something in the kitchen one day with music playing in the lounge and L'alba separa came on. I was too far away to distinguish recording noise or quality and I was sure it was Caruso singing but when I went into the lounge it was Bjorling. I'm not trying to promote my videos but I did upload one that you might like with three tenors singing L'alba separa, (Schipa, Bjorling and Caruso) so I'll send you one last link kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j8-TdLujqN2llX0.html It's really useful and easy to do links (it had to be easy for me to master it) and I'll send you the procedure tomorrow. The Bjorling Ingemisco is definitely from 1938 ( same day as Cujus animan) and I can't see another studio recording in 1938 in the discography that I have, so it's probably the recording that you were thinking of. Just in case you didn't get my earlier message Very best wishes for the New Year from Yorkshire.

Jussi's father David Björling took singing lessons for Caruso from what I've heard. So it's not surprising that Jussi Björling has been influenced by that same Caruso "School", since David probably was the biggest influencer in young Jussis life, taking vocal lessons from his father since he was a very small boy!

It was reviewed by Irving Kolodin in the 1950s as the best overall version on about 12 78s; but he did advise to put Bjorling's 78 recording of the Ingemisco to play instead of Gigli's, whose version had too many sobs and groans, along with that gorgeous voice.

You do an excellent job on your video montages. It does take a lot of work to compile videos, thanks for the effort. Corelli here is incredible, people don't realize how much more control it takes for his heavy voice to achieve this sound. He had a voice of great powerful and great beauty as well, an extremely rare combination. He was very authentic. His squillo is not of this world. Of course this works very well for Björling, Pavarotti is slightly one dimensional.

Difficult to choose. Corelli sounds pleasantly subdued and I was truly touched. I liked him better in a way than Pavarotti though Pavs recording is more majestic with eco and such. But it was a bit much really. As for Björling and Caruso, who will take 1st place? Carusos even tone and that almost supernatural legato is awsome, not to mention the thick texture in his "barytenorial" voice. As for Björling he sings with feeling and the sheer beauty of his high notes is celestial. They must share 1st place.

4 cantantes tan distintos.

Why we have to make rankings about everything, even about great artists with miraculous voices like these legendary tenors from the past!?!?!? Having favorites is acceptable, but making rankings is senseless in my most humbled opinion and is not appropriate way of thinking about art among people who know and understand art.
@michaelmcgrailengland
@michaelmcgrailengland Жыл бұрын
Hello Bozidar, thanks for listening and for your comment. I agree with you about rankings, but as you say, we all have our favourites for one reason or another. However, the main reason that I upload compilations is not so that listeners can rank the singers but to try to introduce them to the great singers of the distant past who are in danger of being forgotten. If a young person who had not heard of Caruso, for example, saw a video of him they probably wouldn't listen but if they saw one also featuring their own favourite, and for younger listeners that could well be Pavarotti, they might listen and thus be introduced to Caruso. I know that you are not a young listener (although you are to me as I'm 80) but you, yourself on the Una furtiva compilation remarked on John McCormack being a revelation to you which I took to mean that you had not heard him before.. I also do a lot of work on the older recordings to try to give them a more up-to-date sound that might make them more appealing to younger people and I've recently started to colourize the photos to make the singers look more like living people, not just museum pieces. Thanks again for listening.

It's a human and American trait. Everything is ranked. But singing is hard to rank. Much relies on personal taste. For depth of expression, Caruso always takes the prize. Not Caruso's best record. But if any piece from any mass is to be sung like an opera aria, this is it. I prefer a cleaner version. Bjoerling and Pavarotti strike a good balance between operatic extroversion and religious reverence. Its a difficult piece. As difficult as any aria I can think of.

Caruso had very slopping phrasing with what appeared to be breathing issues. Not a typical Caruso demonstration.

Thank you for listening, I do hope that you enjoyed the video. I included the Caruso recording because I think that it's wonderful and I hear no sloppy phrasing or any other evidence of breathing issues.

What do you mean? I don't hear sloppiness. He always took a lot of breaths Smoked 2 packs a day. But it's typical Caruso to me. His emotional " cries" break up the line. He sings it like an aria, as most do. It's a very operatic requiem!

Thank you for listening, I'm sorry that your personal favourite wasn't included. Jerry Hadley's recording is excellent but, for me the best are are Caruso and Bjorling.

Why did you choose such a bad recording for Pavarotti?
@michaelmcgrailengland
@michaelmcgrailengland 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for listening. I wasn't aware that I had chosen a bad recording, it was just the first studio recording that came to hand. I'm not a huge Pavarotti fan but it sounded OK to me and, in fact, some commenters have chosen it as the best from this selection. I admire Pavarotti greatly, he was a wonderful singer and entertainer with a larger than life personality and I know that many people still regard him as "the greatest" so I occasionally include him in my compilations. I have three top favourites, McCormack, Caruso and Bjorling, but I'm 80 years old with my feet planted firmly in the past so the numbers sharing my taste are quickly diminishing, but I hope that my KZfaq channel will help to keep their names alive. Thanks again for listening.

@@michaelmcgrailengland you did fine. but to me his best interpretation was with Karajan in 1967, which to me is also better than all of the others

Thanks for listening and for your comment Alfred. I would put Bjorling at the top with Caruso but that's just my personal choice, of course. I don't know if you have a similar saying where you are but we have one that is "one man's meat is another mans poison" and that seems to apply quite a lot to the singers that I upload to KZfaq.
