Waltz as Landa is in my top 3 performances of all time, and this film is, for me, the 2nd greatest/best film made in the 21st Century behind ‘There Will Be Blood’. It’s also my favorite Tarantino film

Tarantino's movies are made for people who love watching movies. By that, I mean his movies are more appreciated by those who watch and love more movies than the average person, and who understand all the genre references, homages, and inspirations in his movies better than the average person. From spaghetti westerns, Shaw Brothers films, blaxploitation films, giallo films, Japanese anime films, French New Wave, Czech New Wave, Hong Kong New Wave, South Korean New Wave, etc. etc. He is a prolific movie watcher, and so are fans of his movies.

"There Will Be Blood" Another amazing movie! Great review!

I'm definitely renting this. Kill Bill 1 & 2 are my two personal favorite movies of all time. And Pulp Fiction is right up there. Quentin is a brilliant director. And I'm glad you're talking about the horrible mindless movies. Transformers 2 was beyond terrible. The only Michael Bay movies I liked were Transformers (the first) and The Rock. And to think I contributed to Transformers 2's Box Office. YUCK.

Primarily it was a spoof/parody of B level Nazi Exploitation films of the 1970s/80s that usually were shown in Grindhouse theaters and Drive Ins. He took a lot of the same tropes those movies used to make fun of Nazis in an exaggerated way in those Grindhouse movies. Similar to what he did in Death Proof. Since Tarantino loved and understood those films, I think this film is a gem. The dialogue is engrossing, Pitts character and the Landa character are incredible, as well as Shoshanna (Melanie Laurent).

I believe "Basterds" is Tarantino's best film. Michael Bay is definitely a guilty pleasure, though. I find his films highly rewatchable. And, this is coming from a huge Ingmar Bergman fan!

I end up loving portions of Tarantino's films, but rarely the whole thing. I didn't like Kill Bill Vol. 1 and the second half of Death Proof was just B.A.D., while the first half was excellent. This was also true with Inglourious Basterds. The 1st chapter was a masterpiece, the bar scene was good and Christoph Waltz was AMAZING but little else interested me in the movie. And Brad Pitt's performance didn't work for me, even though I wanted it to.

This movie is good looking, revenge fantasy pap - it is that simple. It perpetuates the dangerous idea that people should have just "resisted" and "why didn't they just fight back? I know I would have!" The events in the movie did NOT happen! I struggle to understand the point of the movie other than silly little boy nonsense about easy revenge. I remember I was watching a documentary about concentration camps, and they were interviewing one of the survivors, and he said he stopped talking to schoolchildren about his experiences, because inevitably one would always ask "Why didn't you resist?" The survivor would say, "Every day I survived was resistance" This of course, did not satisfy the schoolchild who asked the question. This movie is made by this schoolchild.

Waltz on par with Ledger??? Hmm, interesting comparison.

Waltz is the star of this show, people who say this is boring obviously prefer the mind numbing likes of xxx etc and have no appreciation of great scripts, very well acted and originality

Tarantino is known for his brilliant corky dialog and this movie didn't have it.I'd also go so far as to say Death proof had better dialog.I love Tarantino, but this movie is a chore to watch..

Not true his last film before this one wss death proof. First time I saw this film i was shocked that it was subtle, but I watched it again an Love it even better. This film is the film that Quentin Tarantino always wanted to make, and it shows. This film is a true masterpiece.

@@CEWIII9873 I think you own it for its coolness too. The car, the jeans and the tooth pick. It's okay at least you admit owning it. So after seeing this movie twice on DVD (and looking forward to seeing it again), I'm absolutely convinced it's fantastic. In every way. I love the dialogue. All the dialogue was full of life and the action was placed where it was needed -- not for the sake of having action -- and the movie benefited from that. And Waltz's performance! He created a character I'd remember for years to come. Loved every bit of this movie (and I disagree with everything the person below me says, lol).
@SandBarAndYou14 жыл бұрын
Not Tarantino's best. Usually, Tarantino's ratio of Interesting Dialogue to All Dialogue is about 90%. In this movie it's about 40%. The music is just unused (and some used) Kill Bill music. Pitt is hard to understand. Inconsistent how they only sometimes translated Merci. I did not empathize with any character and Pitt's character was boring. The characters mumbled a lot. I actually believed Landa's nickname was "Junda" until he himself pronounced it with enunciation towards the end.
@errwhattheflip Жыл бұрын
That seems pretty subjective, no? The music not being used was in moments where the tension is supposed to be there, and it works. Pitt being hard to understand is a little weird considering that it isn't like he clouds the dialogue with his accent.

I feel like you kinda missed the point, then. His scripts are great, but Tarantino often hides quite a few interesting and universal themes underneath the blood and gore
