This film is a bloody masterpiece and greatly underrated in its time. Great dialogue, cinematography, and Christoph Waltz was phenomenal. It interesting that it finished an Oscar trifecta starting with Javier Bardem followed by Heath Ledger and ending with Waltz where all three won supporting Oscars for playing villains that changed how villains could and should be approached in Cinema all around.

Though it's part of Quentin's 'fantasy revenge trilogy for underdogs' along with Django and Once Upon A Time, the dialogue as in the bar scene has some of the lived-in greatness that his best writing has.

The twist between how the Germans and English show the number 3 and how Fassbender got caught just blew my mind. I play that scene all the time.

I was always impressed with the basement scene... you have a British spy, pretending to be german, but has a slight flaw in his disguise in that he enunciates German incorrectly... so many levels to that performance... must be a dream acting in a Tarantino film (if you're a good actor). The way he communicates drama through dialogue is unmatched in my opinion.

I don’t like using the word masterpiece a lot, because it is a phrase which is often overused, but I struggle to find a way to describe my feelings towards this film without calling it a masterpiece. I often forget that it is a Tarantino film as it feels much more polished than his other works, which is saying something!

Christoph Waltz is so bloody phenomenal in this film and it angers me so much after seeing this movie that they completely waste him as Blofeld because he is perfect casting for Blofeld but he is squandered in the Bond series.

Aside from Django, Waltz just hasn't found a role anywhere near this good. Writing is the hardest, most important, yet cheapest, part of the process. And good writing is the rarest.

@@andrewklang809 He seems to have been typecast as 'stock bad guy' [to the extent before they cast Javier Bardem in Pirates 5 they wanted Waltz]. I saw him in Alita: Battle Agent as the titular characters father/mentor and it was refreshing to see him do something a bit different.
@andrewklang8092 жыл бұрын
@@jamesatkinsonja I too saw that film. Not exactly an acting showcase. The role was mostly exposition in the manga and anime, and Waltz had little more to do. That was a one-character movie, unfortunately. And it spent so much time setting up future sequels, and now we won't get any. Not a bad movie, just a bad approach to a movie. I haven't seen Big Eyes, though. That might be a better movie for Waltz. I just don't trust Burton these days, but it's a two-character movie, and he has an established actor in Amy Adams to work off of.

@@andrewklang809 While his work in Alita wasn't going to win him an Oscar it was nice to see him not playing a villain as he often does [Similar to why I do like to see Christopher Walken in films where he's not a villain like 'Catch me if you can']. I haven't seen 'Big Eyes' either but by general consensus it's Burton's best film recently. It helps that he has some boundaries to avoid being self indulgent [the lower budget, a real life story] and he ditched his regular actors.

@jamesatkinsonja2 жыл бұрын
I wonder if it's because they just assume the actor will do all the work when you need to give the actor strong material to work with? [One of my favorite Walken performances is 'Catch me if you can' for example as he's given a great meaty character].
@MultiCastorFiber2 жыл бұрын

The fact is that Walken's (the manufactured meglomaniac) and Lee's (the urbane, sophisticated yet sardonic assassin) performances are fantastic despite the film should also not go unremarked. I have a little bit more trouble with Waltz as Blofeld though, the menace in his performance is almost cartoonish in a sense but it must be acknowledged that the writing of his character, both in background and in traits he exhibits, is a contributing factor in this.

I actually got to see this movie when I was visiting LA in a 35mm print that's privately owned by Tarantino in an old cinema that he bought and uses to show off his collection to the public It's also my favorite movie of his and this was something I wanted to do since I had seen the movie for like the 3rd or 4th time, so it was extremely lucky I was able to catch a showing during the week I was there and I really don't want to sound like a shill, but for the price you didn't just get to see the movie, but they also showed some old WWII era propaganda films and adverts as a warm up, instead of the usual pre-show commercials in regular cinemas

I love this movie. It’s the first Tarantino movie I ever watched and it’s definitely my favourite. It’s partly due to my love of WW2 films, especially the kind of films that this emulates, such as those of the 1960s with its vibrant use of colour. I once heard Tarantino describe this as a film that does everything unexpected. It’s a war film with very little war (it’s really more of a western or even a suspense flick with espionage themes, the Basterds are actually in it very little and they kill Hitler at the end, it’s also an American film where much of the dialogue is in different languages (which I really like because it feels more realistic). I utterly love how the storylines intertwine in ways you also don’t expect. For instance, you expect Shoshanna to kill Landa. Nope. He doesn’t even die. Instead, Shoshanna tries to murder Hitler, which the Basterds end up doing. I love it. I said before, but this really does feel like a Tarantino Bond flick at times, especially in Chapter 5 - Revenge of the Giant Face and Chapter 4 - Operation Kino when you meet Fassbender’s character.

That is Pulp Fiction. But Inglourious Basterds is a modern classic in my opinion. I particularly connected with the music selections, and this film made me an Ennio Morricone fan. It also caused me to watch the Leone westerns and the Western genre ended up becoming a favourite genre of mine. All thanks to Tarantino's film, which wasn't even a Western. Also, I love that little clip from Sabotage. I only saw that film quite recently and really enjoyed finally seeing where Tarantino got that little clip from.

In the build up to this films release, Tarantino was talking about an adaption of Len Deighton's 'Berlin Game' trilogy [with a quirk being he'd make a 3 hour film with each hour covering each book] as a rivial to Bond [as this wasn't long after his failed 'Casino Royale' proposal] to feature Simon Pegg, Michael Caine and Kate Winslet but like so many of his projects [such as his Star Trek film] it never saw the light of day.

Interesting that you think Waltz was hired on as Blofeld because of searing performance in IG, because years ago when the cast list for "Never Say Never, Again" came out, I was excited that the man who played "Antonius Block" in "The Seventh Seal" and "Johan" in "The Hour of the Wolf" would be playing Blofeld. However, like Walz, Max von Sydow had no clear direction on what to do with the Blofeld character, and so his performance was another missed opportunity.

Superb review of an Absolutely brilliant film! Tarantino is just a complete master. And the way he puts his own fresh personal twist on actual real history In this one and in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is just unlike any other filmmaker in the World. Waltz creates one of the great villains of all time in this film. And he gave himself such an astronomically high bar that many people - like yourself - were so disappointed with his Blofeld because as good as it was - it was not in that all time classic league like this is. My favorite scene in it is probably the scene with Fassbender in that German club that you spoke about - just brimming with that incredible suspense you spoke about. Just great great filmmaking here! BTW - Tarantino has another ENORMOUS connection to James Bond because it was he who first talked about a black and white version of Casino Royale! He spoke about a full period piece with Pierce Brosnan as Bond but I guarantee the pre credit sequence with Craig was definitely influenced by his idea!

Disagree with Skyfall being the end of Craig [but lets not go there as we could argue all day about that...] Fassbender is now 45 so probably too late [Craig was 38 when Casino came out] While I far prefer the present, as long as China [which can make or break a big films box office, hence why Hollywood will design films so they only need minor changes] is Russia's ally, the Russian state being enemies isn't going to happen. I can see them doing what Tenet did and have Russian villians who've broke away from the state to avoid that issue.

@@jamesatkinsonja They could just do what they always did in the pre-1990 films. The Russian state was never the villain, only individual corrupt generals, or third party villains trying to play Russia and the West out against each other. What I was trying to say is that the general geopolitical climate gets closer to cold war times again and lends itself to such classic plots.

@@simonbrunner3062 Okay that make sense [they even did the 'playing sides against each other' in Tomorrow but with China instead of Russia].

A game that I would recommend for you to review is No One Lives Forever series. Both are one of the best spy games ever and I bet you would enjoy the hell out of them.

I really enjoyed this film, and Django Unchained and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood as well. However, what I noticed at the time, and subsequently noticed again with Django, is that the marketing played them up as typical Tarantino blood-fests (in the vein of Kill Bill), but what we got were these really interesting and suspenseful period-pieces, with great dialogue-based scenes and an emphasis on plot. It’s almost as if, when making Kill Bill Volume 2, he realized that he had more aptitude or interest in making suspenseful character and dialogue-driven dramas, than in continuing to make the pop-culture-referencing, 70’s cinema-inspired crime and revenge films had been making previously. It’s as if the trailers for Basterds and Django were bait-and-switches to get his typical audience to come in expecting wall-to-wall Nazi deaths, and instead see a film that is really driven around Shoshanna’s story and her plan to get revenge. Similar thing happened with Django: the trailer makes it look like the plot will be Django helping Schultz collect bounties, and then majority of the film involves the plan to rescue his wife from Calvin Candy, with roughly an hour of tense dialogue before the final shootout. All this being said, I think it has been a good career move, and I think it worked well for him in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, to the point that the finale, while obligatory after the rest of his films’s choices (including Basterds), probably could have left out without any detriment to the film.

I gave up on this movie after 20 minutes. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is the only Tarantino film I have liked. I do agree with Tarantino that Pretty Maids All in a Row with Rock Hudson and Angie Dickenson is one of the best movies ever made.

I hated it too. It’s definitely a love or hate movie, it came across as trying too hard / childish to me.

I’m not particularly a fan of tarantinos movies but inglorious basterds (and also django unchained) are two of my favourite films out there.

Tarantino is very hit-or-miss with me, and sadly this is very much a miss as far as I'm concerned. Actually let me rephrase that: on a scene-to-scene basis, it's terrific (save the Shoshanna/Zoller ones, more on that below), I can't add much more to what has already been said about the intro and the bar scene, as well as the whole cinema sequence at the end, brilliant stuff. But as a whole, I find it a rather drab affair, due to the constant winking at the camera and reference to older films. Tarantino is a master at his craft and a very knowledgeable filmgoer, that's for sure, but he constantly seems to feel the need to rub it in our face, to the point of being obnoxious. As a result, Inglorious Basters feels less like a film than a collection of vignettes, each one of them being a tribute to a particular approach of cinema in general and WW2 films in particular, and I do not find that enjoyable. Simply said, it doesn't play straight. It's interesting that you bring up Hitchcock, since for me, Inglorious Basters is an exercise in "imitation is the purest form of flattery" on the level of Gus Van Sant's Psycho. Case in point : the use of several languages. This is very reminiscent of Daryl F. Zanuck's The Longest Day, where each faction spoke their own language, while being directed in their own language by either an English-, German- or French-speaker depending on the case. In Inglorious Basterds however, there's such a discrepancy from one language to the next, that it adds to the overrall disjointed feel of the ensemble, and not in a good way. I cannot for the life of me fathom why English-speakers are so enamored with the likes of Mélanie Laurent and Léa Seydoux, mediocre actresses at best, with a huge, misplaced ego to match. The scenes between Laurent and Brühl are painful and take away any good-will I had towards the film. Sorry, I do not find them clever in any way. Waltz is perfect every time he appears on screen, and Pitt's shtick is entertaining enough, same with Fassbender and Diehl who for my money are the two other best actors in that thing, but Kruger, Roth, Schweiger, Novak and co feek like they are so amazed at being cast in a Tarantino film that they forget acting altogether. Sorry, it became a bit of a rant and I didn't mean to disparage anyone who enjoys the film, and clearly I'm in a minority. As I said, I can take a lot of positives from scene to scene, but just like with Pulp Fiction, Death Proof and Once upon a time in Hollywood, Tarantino's ego permeates too much through the screen for me to enjoy it as a whole.

How have you not seen all of Tarantino's movies? He's not like Roger Corman or anything, he's only got 10 (or 9) movies.
