have you seen platenGUARD locating rings... they have a silicone face that protrudes to protect the platen from ring strikes when mold setting. You can find these on Mold Masters hot runner systems and at DMS Mold components.

Great video about taking care of machinery. Also you should clean mold surfaces same way. If you got clean machine platens and mold is with big layer of gunk, then your work was almost pointless.

it's a good topic, but many people don't do it...

Very good point, you should clean the clamp plates of the mold the same way.

Great advice. Wish we done stuff like this at the facility I work at. Too bad we wait till it's way too late.

I have to ask because I have been looking to purchase a few platen stones for the plant I work in but I am having a difficult time finding where to purchase them. Any suggestions?

Maybe think about adding the 3M scotchguard rotary cleaning discs. Unlike your stones, they are non abrasive.

Scotchgaurd pads are another alternative. The disk that we used here are abrasive but much softer than the platens , therefore they will remover anything from the platen that is not supposed to be there, Thank you for the feedback.

Platen stones are used almost universally in the injection molding industry. I've never worked in a plant that used scotchguard cleaning discs.

Everything is abrasive to some degree. It might be .0001 (1/10,000 of an inch or even less), but it is abrasive

The great thing about precision stones is their ability to keep the platens level and square if used correctly.😊 By thread chasing the bolt holes with a correct-sized tap, it should just about cause the mold to last indefinitely. In 1969, we stuck a injection molding scissor press when it went to dead center. It took two days to free that rascal. We used Multiple Hydraulic jacks and the forklift truck.😢

That last tip on the bolt is something I stress so much to mold setters.

@@rjgwhat if we found something wrong when bolt usage, what we do then ?

I always say 1-1/2 - 2x nothing less nothing more. Also the importance of bolt to heel ratio on clamps and heel thickness.. when I got to my place there was only one mold setter and he was only gunning the bolts in about 2/3rd of the thickness and he was sliding the clamps as far in as he can and not really paying attention to the thickness of the heel (always want it slightly more then the plate) and I had to explain that it's like a teeter totter and theirs not as much leverage that way. I'd take a clamp that's 2" on the plate over one that's 4" on the plate any day that way the distribution is more evenly and not just on the heel.

that is unless if the platen holes are reallllly close to the plate like within 2 inches but 3-4 inches away just throw an extra on each side and use the toe even if it's on the flat side.
