I have a similar alloy tip pencil and I have no problem writing on wood with it. As I understand it, when the alloy tip gets in contact with a hard but fibrous/porous surface it leaves a very thin but visible oxidised trail. I noticed that you used it on a piece of wood that was varnished and that's probably why it didn't work since varnish seals wood fibres. Cheers!

We purchased two of these and were very disappointed. They don't write dark enough and sometimes the tip rips the paper if you press to hard.

Pencils weren't always made with graphite. You can write with a corner on a lead fishing sinker, but I doubt this is made of lead. It's probably some other alloy with enough malleability and low enough molecular shearing strength. Before graphite, pencils, or "silverpoints", were made of metal, usually lead with a bit of antimony for strength. That's why we call graphite "lead" -- it's a hangover from when they were lead. I use fountain pens instead of cheap stick ballpoints. They can hold many times the ink of a ballpoint, and if you can refill it from a bottle of ink, it's very economical. These aren't pens by any stretch. They're more like old fashioned pencils. Turns out that graphite was the replacement for a silverpoint because the marks from a silverpoint are so relatively faint. Thankfully they don't use actual lead, as that would be severely neurotoxic and utterly inappropriate to give to a child. I carry a fountain pen and a 5.6mm graphite clutch pencil. It's like a draftsman's clutch pencil but the lead is 3x as thick. There's a sharpener in the back cap, and mine came with a touchscreen stylus tip that clamps in front of the lead using the same clutch mechanism. You don't even have to take out the lead. You can select the hardness of the lead you want to use -- I use HB -- and it marks well on paper, cardboard, wood, and other similar surfaces. Doesn't mark on smooth, non porous surfaces like metal, polished stone, or glass. But that's because it's an actual pencil. I'll keep the silverpoints I bought ($2 each) for general writing that doesn't have to be secure and will always be done on paper, like my ham radio logbook.
