In this video I'll be giving Affinity Designer a look and letting you know what my first impressions are.
Affinity Designer is a vector graphics editor similar to Inkscape and Illustrator, and it's developed by a company known as Serif. Unlike Adobe's subscription-based pricing model, Affinity Designer is just a one-time purchase and you're done. You get to own the software as opposed to being forced to rent it like you are with Illustrator.
Want to learn more about how Inkscape works? Check out the Inkscape Master Class - a comprehensive series of over 50 videos where I go over every tool, feature and function in Inkscape and explain what it is, how it works, and why it's useful: logosbynick.com/inkscape/

I had been using Adobe professionally for 25 years. After two months of learning Affinity and using it on client work I just cancelled my Adobe subscription and completely migrated to Affinity Designer, Photo and Publisher for all of my design and layout work. Incredible creative programs.

Personally I’ve never understood the appeal of Adobe for design work, especially when print is involved. Where I come from CorelDRAW was and still is industry standard. It seems to me that Illustrator is more of American and British thing (mainly because Brits try to double up Americans)

Kyle Shold interesting. I'm a creative professional with 25 years of experience in the entertainment industry. There is no way I can't give up on Adobe. The entire industry is locked on it. Affinity is cool but not widespread. That's why it's not a replacement option but another tool to your arsenal.

Yes, Affinity Designer tutorials! Shape Builder is on their feature roadmap, but no word on when. If you have the Affinity Suite, what is nice is being able to jump back and forth between the programs with the same image. You can switch to Photo and it will even keep the layers. Be sure to check out the pixel persona, the icon with the squares under file. When you're in that persona, it works like a raster image. You can paint, just like Photoshop, GIMP, Krita. Whatever you do on that pixel layer can be selected just like a vector, moved, resized, etc, when you switch back to Designer persona.

Just got this video recommended on the front page. Been working on and off with Affinity products for around 4 years now. Although I only use the programs maybe once a month, I've purchased them all (Designer/Photo/Publisher) just to support their licensing model. One great feature you didn't mention (because you probably didn't experience it yet): All their programs share the same file format. What this allows you to do is install all the programs, then work on a flyer in Publisher. You notice something off with the logo, so you just click the menu bar and it hands off the whole document to Designer to fix that logo. Then you want to change the color balance of a photo, you click another button to switch to Photo, where you can edit the file, save it, then return to publisher and continue writing, etc. And just to note I'm not just talking about their "persona" buttons that basically change view/behavior. During all of this all the programs keep a full WYSIWYG view. Only thing better would be one big program with everything inside, but then again more modular isn't wrong either.

I never used Affinity before but it sounds about right. I mean, Adobe is known for the integration between the programs but that doesn't really work that well. Want to import stuff from Illustrator to InDesign? As long as it's not editable text and you didn't apply any effects, no problem. If you did, then better save an eps and import that instead. Want to import from Illustrator to Photoshop? No problem. Wants to import from Photoshop to Illustrator? Good luck. I also never understood why can't the shortcuts be universal between the programs. Some have ctrl+k for the preferences, some have ctrl+; and some have another shortcut. Would it kill them to be consistent?

Just as a mention, what you see in the layers Tabs of Affinity Designer are in fact equivalent to the Objects you see in the Objects window in Inkscape, and there is a possibility to "upgrade" a group to a Layer, for the sake of organization.

I was a long time Illustrator user and then switched to Inkscape when I sort of semi-retired and couldn't afford the cost of Illustrator. I've now purchased the whole Affinity suite for around the same price as as a years sub to PS and LR. I have to say that the way they integrate together is superb. I can open files in Designer and switch to Photo for better pixel editing, and vice versa. CMYK is essential for print designers and the vector brush tools are amazing and perfect for digital artists. For freelance artists and designers who don't maybe need the workflow tools provided by Adobe it's a stunning achievement that will surely leave Adobe choking in the dust. And it's fast. From my experience I noticed that Inkscape gets very laggy when lots of complex vector shapes are used in a design, even on a powerful gaming PC. I don't have these issues with Designer. And the myriad layers? When you group some vectors they combine into one layer.

One of my favorite features of the Affinity software suite is that the files of any of the three programs can be opened in any of the other ones, even right via the file menu "Edit in …". That means if I'm doing vector work and I want to use one pixel layer and I want to quickly perform some photo editing it like applying a non-destructive depth of field effect, I just quickly pop the document over into Photo, apply my edits in place seeing all that I do in context, then pop back into Designer to continue the vector work

I've been using Affinity for seven-ish months now and I love it. Like you said, it feels intuitive and somehow right. Before I purchased Affinity for myself, I was doing some freelance work for a company where I used their Adobe software. I got used to it, but now when I have to go back to Adobe it feels clunky and outdated. The thing I especially hate about it is that you can't control-scroll to zoom in and out (that seems like it should be a basic action!) and also that you can't shift-scroll to pan side-to-side. Affinity, on the other hand, is smooth and pleasant to work in.

Love your videos Nick, keep em' coming. Been doing this for a couple decades and still learning. Would love to see some Affinity related content! I just switched to Affinity, after 20 years with Adobe, it's an adventure. I'm retired but still do freelance work on the side, mainly because I still love doing it, so it's hard to justify subscription pricing in my situation. Most of my clients were shut down through the pandemic, so when Affinity had a "half price" sale I bought all three products to give em' a try. Even after seeing how many rave about it, I kept my expectations low, but they do everything I need. There are differences to get used to, but overall they're way more than I expected at that price point. One issue is importing Adobe files with certain effects, they're handled differently, kind of a pain, but repairable, so all my existing Adobe files can still be used, some just need to be "tweaked". I also use Inkscape regularly, it's awesome software, wish it had CMYK support. Affinity does something that Adobe has always had issues with, proper handling of SVG files. Inkscape native SVG files can be opened with, or imported into Affinity, as well as other file types that Adobe is known for having issues with, so converting an Inkscape file to CMYK is easy. Best part about Affinity, just like Inkscape, I own it!!!

I am interested in seeing more videos on this product. I'm definitely going to purchase it after seeing this video because of the CMYK feature. I was disappointed that it wasn't covered in the recent Inkscape release. Thanks for all of your Inkscape videos. I've been learning Inkscape for a year, mostly from watching your videos, trying to do the technique, failing, and watching the video again. I was surprised how hard it was and I nearly gave up several times. I was a painter before, and I'm generally good with computers so I thought it would be much easier. But I kept up with it, and then all of a sudden I got really good with it. I could produce the type of illustrations I wanted quickly and confidently. So for people having a hard time learning, keep going. I'm so glad I didn't quit. People are surprised at all the artwork I'm creating. They say "Wow, you made all that in one day?" when I made all that and more in a few hours. It took me a long time and much work to get to the point where I could do that though.

The only products competing with Adobe are the ones that have similar price tags. Just like in the real world. Corel has competed with Adobe for decades. The prices are similar. Subscriptions. Coreldraw might be a dollar cheaper per month. And low cost software has a feature set to match, usually, although there are some exceptions such as Clip Studio Paint. Serif has always made consumer level software. They are doing fine in that market and probably have absolutely no intention of actually attempting to compete with Adobe.

I learned how to use Inkscape with your videos and I love the variety of file formats Affinity handles, that Inkscape doesn't, that's probably the one reason I got it for, sometimes I just open the files in Affinity to export them as SVG and then work on it on Inkscape if I need something fast and Don;t have time to figure it out in Affinity, but it would be highly appreciated if you did!

I agree. I mean, they started out writing these programs for Macs, which is loosely based on Linux (MacOS is heavily based on Unix, which IIRC, Linux is based on). There's NO justifiable reason why they can't tweak a few things to be supported on Linux If Affinity would run natively on Linux/Debian based distros, They'd have my business immediately.

I disagree since Adobe went to the subscription based model it is cheaper if you want the software to always be updated. Although I do think that the end user should still have the option to buy it or rent it. The adobe master suite was $2500 dollars to purchase and a new version was released annually that means to stay up to date you had to pay $2500 every year. With the subscription you pay about $600 every year (I'm not sure of the exact price I only ever bought the student version) and you software is always updated. Now if you don't mind continuing without updating the old software for 5 years then yes the purchase model is cheaper. I am only referring to the fact that subscription is cheaper than purchasing in this way. Adobe is still expensive AF and since my income is not based on it I had to let my subscription go once I could no longer use the student edition. I needed a more affordable solution and $150 for all three Affinity apps fits that criteria nicely.

While I do like Affinity as a replacement for Illustrator, I find a lot of their choices a little obtuse sometimes. It's almost like they changed the function of some tools _just_ to be different from Adobe, but didn't consider just how irritating those changes would be in practice. Having to switch to a different tool just to move an object that you already have selected, missing options like a simple distort, the way handles work with the pen tool almost forces you to draw every path first as angular shapes and _then_ go back to add rounded edges. Polygons and other shapes objects have to be converted to "curves" before you can add points? WHY? The layers... just too much clutter. It all just adds extra steps that don't need to be there and slows things down tremendously. There's a lot of stuff on their roadmap, but when they'll get to them is anyone's guess because the team is small. In the mean time if you can't do something in the program you either have to hope you still have an old copy of illustrator or just be screwed because you can't do what the client wants. There are some nice features in there, but you have to get past a pile of little annoyances first.

Many Affinity forum users keep requesting native Linux ports, but the staff members in the forums keep shooting it down. As one said, they would have to be fairly certain they would recoup the $500,000 in development costs it would take to make the ports before they considered doing so. You can assure them they certainly would, but those assurances always fall on deaf ears because the Linux desktop marketshare is (or appears to be) so low.
@antoniopolonio
@antoniopolonio 4 жыл бұрын
@@HickoryDickory86 That's true, and I can understand it. Meanwhile, the only alternative for designers on Linux is to collaborate (with personal efforts and money) with open developments like Inkscape and make them grow. Unfortunately, commercial projects will never come to the Linux ecosystem, although many professionals would be agreed to pay for their licenses. But this is another debate :) Cheers!
@HickoryDickory86
@HickoryDickory86 4 жыл бұрын
@@antoniopolonio I understand it too, but it's just the same old, unfortunate, chicken-and-egg scenario. If I were weqlthy enough, I would just donate to them the $500k to see it done. But alas, I am not. 🥺 But I'm guessing that's what we need to get such things done: Wealthy investors willing to donate to these companies to cover the cost of native Linux ports. Because I truly do believe that Linux is not widely adopted precisely because these industry standard programs (and games, for the most part) are not available on it. Were they, though, I am 99.999% sure Linux desktop marketshare would see a massive takeoff and surpass macOS by a wide margin in no time.

Subscription pricing is the future for pretty much everything. Every company that can figure out a way to get that constant cash flow is trying to do it. Now even small software businesses are doing subscriptions, and people are paying it too. So, Adobe is just ahead of the game, and the rest of the world is going to catch up as soon as they can. It's unfortunate but that's the truth. Just thinking about it. Right now, you can subscribe to shaving supplies. And people are subscribing. HP tried to get me to subscribe to ink. My Dell PC tries to get a backup subscription out of me. As a business person, I love the subscription model. As a consumer, I hate it.
