Try start card size; with a still life you can touch and practise with light source replacing; in the front, back or side or from above; all can give different values; contrast is the magic word when it comes to shading; dont start on a full size; i made that mistake. for beginner level id say use 100% cotton; its easier to learn with consistency of paper;; it is harder to relearn the other way around; yes been there too.

I would like to improve on making backgrounds with watercolor pencils (painting in a way that is even and consistent) and layering colors enough (with regular colored pencils) to blend them smoothly. I try to use as little water as possible when I paint in coloring books, but I have to finish backgrounds quickly to avoid lines or unwanted color variations. I need to be more consistent when I layer colored pencils because too much pressure will affect my ability to add more layers and change the way that different colors blend together. Nice video!

I use inktense as grissaille for watercolor. Have the set of 72 blocks. I think for my level of painting lightfast is overrated. When you sale or teach I can imagine that being different. But I don't do both. Wich is a good thing given covid gave me a two year inspiration block. Is a mom thing. Kindof hard to focus with everyone at home;lol. But I like to use sennelier for wc; due to their layering qualities; but with normal cards or a4 size paintings inktense as underpainting is brilliant. Im picky when it comes to paper. Giveaways are done on hahnemuhle expression paper or arches. Normal cards usualy the canson xl aquarelle. I dont expect them to endup in a museum or gallery nor is that my goal :P

@@LanaGloschatArt Its brilliant due to not smudging. Grissaille in warm, cool underpainting in brown, yellow or blue in tone on tone, i specialy like that with gouache. But for a bigger piece im one of them pesky purists. For practise its a mear conveniance; underpainting does the shading job.
