Nice inlay design and it takes care of both the front fret markers and the side markers at the same time good Idea. That neck is a real nice looking piece of bird's eye maple. I could also tell by the carving with the chisel you did on it that is also a fairly hard piece of wood as well. looking good sir.

Really taken with those inlays; comparatively simply, but so very effect...I may have to borrow the idea. 😁

Nice inlays! They would also look nice made from the birdseye maple. That would really stand out from a darker fretboard.

I've done that same inlay on the neck with spare bits of bone from making nuts and saddles. The only thing I did different is that they would be shorter on the headstock end and gradually get a little longer as you go up the neck. Very cool design. I love the combination of the binding and fretboard and ebony inlays. That looks so nice.

Oh I like the sound of that... Bone is a cool idea, too. Great use for any scraps or "accidents"

That's a great looking neck. Now you've got me thinking about doing an asymmetrical neck!

Love the inlays, a little more elegant that the semi-circular ones you often see on the Chet Atkins Gretsch!

Thank you, I always like these style inlays myself. You don't see them too often, but I find them pretty classy if I do say so myself.

For fifteen years I did the fingerboard radius by gluing sandpaper to my work table, holding the neck upside down, sanded in the radius I wanted. The crazy thing is, unless you work real hard to avoid it, it automatically makes a compound radius.

Inlays look excellent, I really like that it wraps from top to side as one piece.

Looks great! Inlays are very practical, if it were me id consider a little 1 or 2mm rod or shell dot in the middle of the rounded edge just to give them a little more something.

Buying gear to start my first built later this year. I'm confident in almost everything else (I just finished up building a house in Cork which was mostly DIY and a lot of timber), but the idea of carving a neck doesn't sit well with me. This video really gave me a lot more hope that I won't make a complete and utter balls of it. Nicely done Sean!

The oil really makes it pop! And nice touch with the flamed maple binding, I didn't know if it'd be noticeable but it is on those close ups. The bass is looking really good so far, can't wait for the next episode!

I do all my necks with trapezoidal profiles. I feel like it gives the thumb a stable area to press against, making it more comfortable. Everyone should try it once.
@yellowcat1310

the thumb?
@rauschguitars
@rauschguitars 2 жыл бұрын
@@yellowcat1310 When you're playing, you press with your thumb on the back of the neck. Pressing against a flat surface is more stable than pressing against a rounded surface - at least in theory.

@@rauschguitars ahh, ok, i didn't get the 'faceted' neck thing. i had inlays in my brain.

@@yellowcat1310 I understand the confusion! If your thumb is on the inlays, you're either doing it wrong, or your name is Mike Dawes! 😂

The inlays are nice. The asymmetrical carve rocks, right? Once you've done it, it really seems pointless to do anything different. :D

Hey. During fretboard sanding with a radius sanding block (timestamp around 15:30) the neck is bending down like crazy. Does it matter that it does that? Shouldn't we support the neck from below so it can't bend that way during sanding or even radius it before neck carving (when it is still sitting nice and flat on workbench)? Or is it not an issue at all and we still going to get perfectly straight fingerboard? P.S. Love the build!
@AwenLutherieCustomGuitars
@AwenLutherieCustomGuitars Жыл бұрын
Ah, I see exactly what you mean. I think the camera makes it look like it's flexing more than it is, because it sure didn't feel that bad when I was doing it! Regardless, the radius block is only to put in the radius and they don't do much to the straightness. Right after that, I went over it with a flat, straight levelling beam, which is to straighten out the fretboard along its length. I always radius this way and it never comes out not straight, but you could absolutely radius before carving. I just prefer to carve with a flat fretboard as it's easier to clamp. Thanks for watching!

Nice job. I dont understand why the offset neck? How does this result for the player?
@AwenLutherieCustomGuitars
@AwenLutherieCustomGuitars Жыл бұрын
An Asymmetrical neck should guide your hand into a slightly more comfortable position as your move up the neck, which can also help to reduce fatigue or pain on your wrist. I personally love it

How long does it take do carve a neck like this? I suppose its a realy hard work.
@AwenLutherieCustomGuitars
@AwenLutherieCustomGuitars Жыл бұрын
Longer than I thought. Usually I can carve a neck fully in about 30-45 minutes, but this facetted neck took about 2 hours!

you're moving the camera too fast, the markers are just a blur when you do that.
