While Blender's compositor is certainly highly capable, Fusion has a lot more features and functionality for the same low price - sorry Blender! So in this video, I'll break down a recent vfx shot I created and show you how to get started compositing your own VFX in Fusion. As we go, I'll compare Blender's compositor with Fusion's to show how the two differ.

why doing all these extra steps? u could just import the video as a plane and make everything in blender and render the finished thing there, i dont understand the benefits of compositing neither in fusion nor in blender, cause colour correction and so on u can still do with the renderd video

I've discovered the magic of Fusion a little while ago and I'm diving deep into it these days, so I'm curious to see what kind of tutorials you'll come up with for it in the future! I love the transition to Resolve. Resolves color grading and compositing features are greattt. I started using it few months ago and I fell in love with it. And for those who are wandering, its free version is completely enough, especially for people starting out. I belive the free version is only restricted by some minor effects and exporting in 8K or mayby it was 4K... Idk. The thing is, it doesnt have water marks or any weird restrictions like some other "trail" versions of some "softwares" for editing have. it is great! :)

This is the best introduction to Fusion that I've seen. Comparing Fusion back to Blender really helps. I had no idea you could set Fusion up to work in a vertical orientation like Natron or Nuke. We use Resolve as our primary editor. Looks like we'll have to give it a run for comp as well. Thanks for the helpful video!
@InLightVFX
@InLightVFX 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve. I'm glad the comparison was helpful. Yes, Fusion's nodes are quite flexible in the orientation. I wish it was more built for vertical-only and sometimes the connections can get a bit wacky. But overall it's easy to stay organized. Hope you find Fusion helpful in your workflow!
@nixellion
@nixellion 3 жыл бұрын
I feel like it's worth noting that Fusion existed long before DaVinci, and was formerly known as eyeon Fusion, and it was competing with Nuke for a while. As a matter of fact it's history dates back to 1987 with it's first public release in 1996, while Nuke was released in 1993, so it's a very mature compositor and not something new in the market.

7:31 I know you warned that this color workflow is not the ideal approach, but I'll just say anyway for academic purposes that it's generally more correct to convert the footage to linear, rather than the CG elements to log. That way everything is still composited in the same linear space. Then, either convert to log on output (when rendering DPX) or leave linear (when rendering EXR).

fusion has so much potential as a Nuke replacement, but I still prefer how quickly Nuke can detect EXR layers and create new render layers. I hope blackmagic continues to support it and maybe one day there will be actual competition for Nuke!

I dunno. I use both and they both have their +'s and -'s. But the resolve 17 live announcement shocked me. they did 99 percent on resolve and like 2 minutes on fusion. which worries me. if they drop support for fusion there will be a lot of very upset people
