Walter Lure performed in the band called the Heartbreakers and for many years was a musical foil for Johnny as they traversed and toured America and Europe. After Johnny death, Walter continued to play - and to this day he performs and tours as lead in the band called the Waldos. Paul Tschinkel spoke with the affable Walter at his home in Bayside New York.

Rest in peace, Walter. Always a gentleman, a crackin' guitar player and a great frontman in his own right. Many nights he carried Johnny on his capable shoulders covering both of their parts. His output with the Waldos solidifies his legacy as a songwriter with a great ear for hooks and melodies. A legend of New York rock n roll. Sad to hear of his passing.

Always great to see Walter talk about those days when the Heartbreakers were still playing together, even after the band officially broke up in 77 or 78. It said from an upcoming film, Johnny Johnny Johnny......when can we expect to see the film? I'm always excited to see any film about Johnny. And I know Paul has some amazing footage of the band, as well as Johnny playing with other people, I'm sure it's gonna be great. I can't wait to see it. Hopefully sooner than later.

Great to see Walter Lure getting some well deserved recognition. For me personally, he co-wrote with Jerry Nolan what I thought were all the best Heartbreaker songs and he sang them and played most of the leads. One Track Mind, Get Off The Phone, All By Myself, etc, etc, etc. And the Waldos Rent Party is also fantastic

What a shame ,What a talent ,Loved seeing Johnny at Max,s back in the day but i saw him like this every time i saw him ,very rarely would he be onstage without doing to much junkie business first ,Why do people gravitate to a needle when just about every single kid growing up hated needles but would sacrifice his body to the many track marks and exploded veins on a body made of Puss! Don,t know how he would be able to play guitar and stand on stage like a weeble wobble and not fall on his face!This is not by any means to say that woul,dnt happen but when it did it would be on very high doses and he would in those induced comas stop a song and just start babbling ,sometimes incoherent and snap back out to continue the rest of the song! Sad to see him deteriorate before your eyes over the years but like so many greats their lives go out like a candle in the wind and wind up in many books and docs! He will be missed !

@twistedspanner
@twistedspanner 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think Walter would agree with you there. In Waldo's book he mentions a phone call he got from Sid Vicious. Sid wanted to form a band with him. Waldo didn't think it was a good idea because of Nancy being around but also because Sid was unreliable and that he thought Sid couldn't sing either. Which I thought was a bit harsh. I thought Sid was a great singer. As much as I love Waldo I think Sid was a better singer who never got the chance to do more than 3 singles and a live album of covers. Sid's version of Walter and Jerry's song 'Take A Chance' on Sid Sings is much better than all the the Heartbreakers' versions.
