Surface modelling is a technique in SolidWorks that allows you to manipulate the surface of a model. In this webcast, we learn how to do this by using lofts, sweeps and splines. The applications of this technique are countless - from consumer product design through to aerospace, surface modelling is a very powerful tool.

I know it's a few years old, but thank you for this excellent tutorial. Especially for making the reference images available, as this makes it possible to follow along and repeat your steps, pausing the video as-needed. An excellent way to learn and much appreciated.

How could someone give this a thumbs down? This is a great, in-depth, tutorial on surface modeling in SolidWorks that the creator did NOT have to share. I agree with the other comments. This is a great tutorial.

One good tip when you are doing the 3d sketch is to have a four view display! That way you don't have to change planes manually ! They are all there for you to see! Much easier

superb ! I've learnt so much, the single most informative video on solidworks I've ever watched. I'm sure I'll need to watch it multiple times though : it feels a long time till I can work my way through this stuff without help, yet you make it so clear and explain the "why" of each stage which is half the battle. thank you.

I know this is Nine years ago now but thank you. I'm a design student who used solidworks a lot and I want to turn my sketches and blue foam models of a robot for my module into surface models 5 minutes in and I already learnt how to import images which is going to be critical to help me do this. Going to watch the rest of the tutorial now but thanks so much ♥️.

At 3.50 you’ll notice that I actually constructed two separate splines to produce the mouse outline, you may find this a little easier than drawing one and using Split Entities. I would recommend making sure that the sketch is hidden when you come to select the edges at 13.00.

Great tutorial! I think you would have gotten a better, more accurate, line along the top silver sections by using a projected curve by combining a top view sketch and a right view sketch. Then turn it into a 3D sketch by using the convert entities function. :)

Within the same sketch he drew 2 separate spline lines. To do this, you draw the first one, then deselect (switch tools or something, but don't exit sketch). Then draw the second spline by drawing with splines again.

Great tutorial! It was easy to understand and a very good introduction to surfacing. On a side note, how do I make my solidworks look like yous? I mean in terms of having the reflection of the model on the bottom plane, having reflections on the part itself, and having selected faces glow blue. Thanks in advance!

Hello There. I'm having difficult time closing the sketch into a planar surface as shown on 5:20. After i've made the sketch and followed exactley on the outline of the mouse- i entered the planar surface selction- selected the sketch intended and the it does nothing, it simply stays on the planar surface selection area. Can you help me with that, please? Thank you.

if you wanted one of those splines to be along a straight edge (in one plane ie a fixed distance from centerline but over a curve in another axis) for a certain distance but with all the curves up to that point nicely tangent . how would you do it? i cant find a way to do it without using a line section in between two splines then it wont loft using it .... there has to be a way!!!! am i taking the wrong approach? cant find anything like this anywhere
