I’m really thinking of working as an outpatient nurse once I’m done with nursing school! from what I’ve heard it promotes a much better work/life balance

I don’t have experience out patient but can speak to in patient. As a new grad resident I can confirm there is no work life balance. I often forget what day it is and just worked 60 hours in 7 days. Curious what path you ended up taking?

I’ve been in the acute setting for 4 years now. I’m interviewing for my first outpatient job, it’s outpatient pacu. I’m also interviewing for an ICU job. I’m getting more and more interested in the out pt setting. It’s just the M-F thing is definitely different!!

There are so many additional factors that come into play with outpatient. You will NOT have more time to spend with patients if your provider sees 30 - 50 pts/day. Some outpatient facilities are not hiring MAs to room patients. They are relying on the RN to do all of the rooming, refills, phone triage, prior auths, teaching, procedures, etc. Clinic RNs are on a lower pay scale than hospital and Urgent Care RNs in my area. Infusion clinic is considered hospital pay.

Hello! I'm a new grad RN working in a primary care clinic. The job application required experience but I applied anyway. They went ahead and interviewed me and brought me onboard. So far I really like it a lot! I don't do a whole lot of skills, but I am using my brain often. I work M-F and I get hour lunch breaks.

How has it been for you? I’ve only working clinic job. I feel like I’m forgetting everything I learned in school. I feel like I’m going to lose my skills. That’s my biggest fear…. I also hear that I’m not a “real nurse” since I don’t have that hospital exposure and experience… I’m very conflicted right now. If I should just leave my clinic job and get that hospital experience, knowing I don’t want to be a bedside nurse. 😢 I’m thinking about the long run…

@@Krislt9 Do not listen to anyone who tells you that you're not a "real nurse" because you're not working bedside. You're most definitely still a real nurse. I do experience the same feelings, but I remind myself of how much I disliked bedside during nursing school and how outpatient was always where I desired working. I definitely feel like we possess skills that most bedside nurses do not. We can triage patients on the phone, and we definitely learn more about routine medications (in my experience). I'm not sure if I'll ever do bedside, I'm still fairly young. Where I am working now is awesome, but the five day work week is becoming draining to me. I definitely feel like there's both pro's and con's to bedside and outpatient. I say if you don't want to work bedside, then don't! You're still very much a REAL nurse. I have even heard of some new nurses never working bedside and going into roles where they have no direct patient care lol.

@@haileym8073 What are some of the roles where there is no direct patient care lol? I'm interested in orthopedics, sleep medicine, cosmetic derm, and potentially urgent care. I want to go straight into outpatient right after graduating from my ABSN, work for a year, and then apply for a master's program to become a nurse practitioner. I don't want to do any and essentially bypass bedside nursing upon graduating as a new RN. Thanks

When I wanted to leave. Clinic nursing after 3yrs was told needed to be treated as new grad since, had 'left nursing' for more than 6mos. They wanted to negate 20yrs of hospital nursing and 3yrs multi specialty clinic working. Be careful. Can always work for any agency if you want more hours is a great way to see other systems without commitment. Also serves as bridge on resume when you are fed up with place A, can't stand another minute.

I agree I work out patient same hrly pay as inpatient and I work 3 12hr shifts a week so I can pick up ot when desired win/win

So glad I found this video. I’ve been a nurse for 6 years, mostly inpatient wise between psych and med-surg, but now am in the ER. I would love to transition into outpatient care after about a 1-2. The ER is awesome in how much I’m seeing and learning, but due to the nursing shortage, I feel like I do more inpatient work than anything. Thanks for debunking some of the myths.

Hi KL, those are some good points! I definitely had similar thoughts, while the outpatient clinic work/life balance is great, sometimes your skills can degrade which makes it hard if you ever want to get back to the bedside!

I have less than 2 years inpatient experience… currently interviewing for an outpatient primary care role. It’s everything I want in a job but I admit it’s also a significant pay cut for me. I’m taking the jump and seeing where it leads me in the future.

I’m trying to leave bedside nursing once my 1 year residency program is up.. it’s a great experience but I want to try something else. I am also in Georgia currently in school for Psych NP so hopefully I can find something as a psych nurse or something outpatient.

There is a HUGE demand for Psych Nurses! Make sure to check into the repayment programs for psych nurses or apply for it while in school to get your schooling paid for!

My understanding is that you need certain specialization skills to work in specific clinics(?) I’m not sure if that’s correct, but if so, what type of skills are required and how would you gain them? I’m also curious about whether or not you are required to have inpatient nursing experience in order to become an outpatient nurse, or if it’s more preferable by employers or not I love your video btw! It was really helpful and I will definitely watch more!

That is right! Some clinics require previous experience BUT not all of them! It all depends what type of clinic and specialty you would want to go into. That would determine what prior experience is needed.

TECHNICALLY Emergency Department is considered outpatient nursing. But I’m currently doing inpatient and outpatient at the same time.

That you are right! Unfortunately they turn into "InPt" status and end up staying in the ER due to no beds availability:(

I recognized the red ID badge in your first week in the ER video and caught a glimpse of TRHMC (What we used to call it back then) and then you mentioned “a well known hospital in PA” So May I ask? Are you a fellow Reading Health employee? I went to school there and worked there for a couple of years. I, too, worked in the ER! Lol. I am now located in WI and miss home greatly! Love your videos, keep up the good work 👍🏼

I was I was! I started off on E2, which switched to C3, then finished off in the ER before moving to Atlanta!

@@Katherine_Ann Awe, I loved E2 as a student! I worked on R3S & Peds as a PCA during school then N2W, ED/OBS as an RN. If I ever move back to PA, I would definitely go back there for employment. That ED was no joke! When I tell people how many beds we had, how busy we were, and the extreme waiting times...people’s mouths just fall open LOL. Glad to hear you are loving Atlanta!

I am about to graduate with my BSN and have not enjoyed the hospital setting as a tech or in clinicals.. do you think it’s okay to start out in a clinic or outpatient setting?

Can I become a outpatient travel nurse with only outpatient surgery, woundcare, and patient admit experience? Ive been a nurse since june of last year. Im so tired of Louisiana. Please give me some advice I cant live here and work in a hospital no longer. I hate it and feel trapped Im not super experienced but i do have some experience

Yes! Unless some outpt settings offer it but differential is for night shift work
