Inquisition Manuals - The Rise of Torture & How Magic Became Heresy

The Inquisition horrifies us today and when Edgar Allen Poe wanted to pluck a nightmarish book to feature in The Fall of the House of Usher he looked no further than the 14th century Directorium Inquisitorum of Nicholas Eymerich, the most substantial Inquisitors' manual of the period. The Inquisition of the 14th century saw the burning of Joan of Arc, the Templars and Marguerite Porete along with the foundations of the Witch Trials to come. To better understand this period, let's explore the first Inquisitors' manuals where torture becomes commonplace, public punishment replaces penance and Magic is ruled to be Heresy, dramatically shaping the history of Western Esotericism.

what do you think about the Bogomils and their connection to the Cathars? I respect your opinion highly but i want to know about what you have found on their connections. I am curious because it was a large part of my studies when i was in school. Now I wonder what there connection to the Cathar movement was?

I see why you are here Dr. S- having worked in a university history department- there is no way they would let anyone take the time and effort to teach and demonstrate top tier research and intellectual integrity. I think that remembering episodes like the ones you documented here is an important exercise for us believers. Sometimes, in our fight against our own bad tendencies and disbelief, we can develop a tendency towards extreme dogmatism; while I don't consider dogmatism and ortodoxy per se as a problem, we have to always pay attention to what it can become if we are not careful.

One of the most aggravating issues with torture is the idea that torture is repellent but works. You get garbage. I understood this more fully when I spent a day in indescribable agony with my back. I literally couldn't remember who or where I was. If you told me I was an escaped albigensian tortoise I'd have agreed because I had no other ideas in my head. Note I am not, to the best of my knowledge, nor have I ever been an escaped tortoise.

It can still be said that it works, depending on the goal. If the goal is to discover the truth, then I agree with you. If the goal is confirmation of your pre-existing conclusions, or confession to an untrue accusation, or acquiescence to a totalitarian ideology, then I think it is probably very, very effective. Unfortunately, I think history shows us that vast numbers of people have been tortured in order to make them profess to lies rather than to discover the truth.

Interestingly the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition survives to this day - though now known as the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. The DDF that recently made headlines for publishing "Fiducia supplicans", permitting the blessing of people in lgbtq+ unions, is the same functionary of the Roman Curia that led the Inquisition. Such a fascinating, and frightening, era of Church history. Thank you for sharing your research with us Dr. Sledge!

When my grandson was in elementary school, he had a spiritual experience one day at school, and heard the voice of God calling him by his name. The school sent him home and as I picked him up, he excitedly told me about it; however, his parents when they got home from work, they took him to their catholic priest, who told them it was demonic and kicked them out of "his congregation" saying it was heresy.
@jazmendunham7666
@jazmendunham7666 6 ай бұрын
Absolutely terrible behavior on part of the priest. Was the family excommunicated? Regardless... Have you considered the "3 secrets of Fatima?" If you're not familiar, it was a big deal for the Catholics in the early 1900s. Several school aged children experienced a Marian Vision. The bright, matriarchal entity imparted several "secrets" to the children concerning the future of the church. Revelatory stuff. The children, particularly one of them, were celebrated and it is considered a bonafide miracle by the church. Isn't it funny that your grandson experiences something not incredibly dissimilar but possibly because of the faithless age we live in (and perhaps a bit of jealousy on the part of the priest, that such a miraculous experience occurred outside the walls of mother church) he is maligned for it. And here I thought the Catholics loved children 🤷🏻‍♂️

I only have dipped into Gui and Eymerich briefly when I was teaching History of Witchcraft at U of M more than a decade ago (and handily translated), but found the discussion of dulia vs. latria one that still sticks with me, and how this distinction has relevance outside of the Inquisition in a variety of different religious frameworks. (There's a discussion amongst some modern polytheists/animists about whether one "worships" one's Ancestors or only "gives them honor/reverence," for example.)

This was a fantastic episode, and I truly appreciate you not cutting it down. Now, I've glanced over the comments, and I've been a little surprised at some of the bias in them. This episode talks about the importance of the separation of the church and the state. I agree. But I would caution everybody not to dismiss the zealotry that exists within the government itself. Some of the tactics discussed here exist within the practices of our government, regardless of political alignment or religious influence. In fact, it is arguably more frightening to consider the potential atrocities of an establishment that does not fear the judgement of a higher power. That is not MY argument, but I believe it is one worthy of some consideration.

The psychologist on Hidden True Crime compared the treatment of the kids to something out of the Inquisition. The torture, false confessions, and lies, along with the children being "possessed" by demons. Your intro hit hard after that. You could add the Daybell Cult and their "zombies" to the modern day list as well.

Where's Emeric when you have a lot of rich people - er - I mean "heretics" to dispatch? And at least the inquisitors knew about diversifying theirr market - that's real entrepreneurialism! Great episode Justin, thanks!

Great! Ive been waiting for this. The old crone is the great fear of powerful men. Like a matriarchial elephant her widdom is deep.

I'm Catholic and can feel a little defensive sometimes when, from my perspective, I feel you are misstating or being unfair about some teaching or historical point. Here I found you to be eminently fair and informative. My Church's history is massive and includes good and bad! Thanks for another good presentation.

the Spanish Inquisition is not what anyone expects! If the Spanish Inquisition is to be expected, it is almost never by anyone who would have in fact expected this particular thing... wait I messed that up, let me start over.

Once I would have assumed any convictions of witchcraft/magic were always trumped up, but since having talked to people who grew up in parts of Africa where they saw witchcraft firsthand, I wonder how much that assumption is based on the cultural atmosphere of materialist rationalism I grew up in. I would love it if you looked into any such particularly interesting or perplexing cases. Thanks for making such incredible content!
