A technique call "Mellisma", very prevalent in middle eastern, Turkish, African cultures. Hear a lot during prayers or call to prayer. I believe that was his 23 second run. Take your videos from Dimash YT channel, or Gloria WU YT channel-she does a lot of the back stories to a lot of his songs & puts in subtitles for him. You won't have copyright problems with these two channels

You are one of a small number of people who make reaction videos that even mentioned those crazy runs at the end of the song, how cool is that. I saw a vocal coach play that interesting vocal style back in slow motion sound and when I heard it I knew it was real, and I can only imagine how much practice it takes to make those vocal maneuvers so fast in real time. That is amazing all on its own. I like your reactions, they are interesting and genuine. Oh, and a side note, you always look wonderful :-)

Some things I really like about your reactions - you place your comments very well musically, listening intently during the most important parts & speaking in the "breaks". Another thing - you back up & replay some of the coolest parts - I love that! I've heard that the melismas he was doing are based on traditional Kazakh/Mongol singing, similar to yodeling; as Bob commented, the New Wave version, as well as several other versions of "Know" have lots of it. I'm another person with the opinion that Dimash is the best on the planet, those register & style changes are so seamless & the tones always so impossibly perfect. Very insightful reaction & commentary, Ella!

Many people below in the comments section will explain what he is doing vocally so you should read them and do some research to figure it out. For me, it's just another example of how well trained his voice is and how much hard work had to have gone into learning how to do it. He is in Wikipedia and they give you lots of useful info there, including his devotion to his fans ('Dears', as they are known) and his philanthropy. He truly is, as one of the vocal teachers called him, a "one-in-seven-billion" entertainer. Just means that there may not be anyone else on this planet that can do what he does...he may be right!

I just discovered your channel and have been binge-watching your reactions. You are among the best reactors I have seen so far. Your comments and analysis are truly worth watching. The band A-Studio is originally from Kazakhstan. The keyboard player, Baigali Serkebaev, composed the song together with the poet Ilia Reznik, and the song was first performed in 1998. The singer of the group A-Studio passed away in 2015, and in this concert, the group was backing up guest vocalists. The triangle man is multi-percussionist Ilya Pokrovsky, a very talented man and a close friend of Dimash and member of the Dimash team (DQ Team). He plays various percussion instruments and accompanies Dimash in all his concerts. Someone explained that the special tribal riff is something practiced in Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and other parts of Asia. A similar technique is also used in some parts of the Middle East. It is referred to by some as a "glottal stop". We use it too when we say "uh oh". A Kazakh KZfaqr commented that Dimash used a Kazakh singing technique, called 'komeymen aytu'. You can hear it among the Turan Group. Sakha people use this technique too; they call it 'kylyhah'. I read somewhere that the tribal vocalization was a tribute to the deceased singer, as it is similar to a technique usually used by women in Kazakh funeral ceremonies. This concert was organized by the man in the white shirt who stood up in the first row, Billionaire Igor Krutoy, a famous Ukrainian and Russian music composer, performer, producer, and musical promoter. It was this performance that prompted him to come out of retirement and compose masterpieces for Dimash to sing, such as I miss you, Ogni Pietra, Your Love, just to name a few. Since this concert, he has been collaborating with Dimash, writing music with his vocal range in mind, and often accompanying him on the piano. So you'll see more of him. It must be very satisfying for him to sit down and compose music without constraints (limitations by ordinary singers). High notes, low notes, whatever his genius mind can conceive, Dimash will achieve.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but the 'Oriental' sound you referred to was a Turkish funeral lament that he added to the song as a tribute to the lead singer of A-Studio (the band that he is with on stage, and original performers of the song) who passed away of a heart attack.

The vocal technique you were struck by is a rapid register change, like a yodel. I think it might be a form of ululation, although I've only ever heard it done in a soprano register. It's a Middle Eastern technique. That spectacular run up to G#5 and back down lasted 22 seconds on one breath. Try "Love is Like a Dream" for low range intimate singing, and "Olympico/Ogni Pietra" for low range power. "Know" is especially good for spectacular runs. "Adagio" is sheer passion.

Hi Ella, thanks for your reaction, that was an ethnic sound I forgot the mane in russian and kazakh (I'm italian) but in english should be "bleating" like a goat bleats. and yes those runs he made last for more tha 22 sec. without breathing( he made it effortless) and believe me you are going to ibe impressed by him even more he always raises the bar. Take care and be safe

I love the eastern melismas. Listen to his "Hello" performed on Chinese TV show.

That ethnic “wailing” is used at funerals in the Middle East, and Dimash added it to honor the original member of the band/singer of this peace because he had been killed (Iin an auto accident). It's a etnic style with very large vibrato and voice reverb and echo.

"Daybreak" Bastau version is the best performance of Dimash so far, you will never be surprised with his vocal ability

The man in the white shirt standing and applauding in the audience is Igor Krutoy. He is a major mover and shaker in the Russian music industry and is personally worth about $13 billion US dollars. Shortly after this performance, Igor came out of semi-retirement to compose music and play the piano for Dimash. That have a rather remarkable father-son type of relationship. Igor is also sponsoring another very promising singer from Russia by the name of Diana Ankudinova....someone else you will want to react to in your videos. Start with Derniere Danse (14 years old), Wicked Game (15 years old), and Human (15 years old). She is currently 17 years old and has quite a few additional videos online. Side note: I stumbled across Dimash about two months ago while watching a reaction video on Diana Ankudinova. Not a day passes that I don't watch and rewatch their music videos. I'm a 69 year old American male and I've NEVER seen or heard anything like these two remarkable singers.

Enjoyed this and your SOS reaction. 🙌🏼💕Although he sings in a similar style in “Hello” it is from Singer 2018 so be cautious of the copyright. I’d recommend “Daybreak” from his Bastau concert...it’s on his official channel. Backstory: Chinese singer Han Hong wrote it about her adoptive son (from his perspective) whose parents died in a cable car accident but not before lifting him to safety. Definitely turn on the subtitles, the lyrics are sad but lovely. Dimash sings it with such unbelievable emotion, IMHO one of his all time best live performances! 😊👍🏼
