It wasn't about actually trying to teach useful stuff, schools were just underfunded so violently, that they couldn't afford cleaning crews, so they had the children do it. You gotta remember, that Russia kinda collapsed only a few years ago, if we look at it from a 2000's perspective

I studied in Russia and yes, it is mandatory to clean your classroom after class (But you don't have to buy any supplies, the school has their own). They usually assign 2 people per day to clean it. When I moved to Europe it felt really strange leaving the classroom all dirty!

In the USA, at least a most schools, students aren’t required to clean the classrooms. The school has janitors for that. Personally I think we should start teaching the kids to clean the classrooms or at the very least the cafeteria tables they eat at during lunch (if the school has a cafeteria). I went to a catholic all boys high school and certain students were picked out to mop the floors and clean the tables during the last 15 minutes or so of lunch. But I guess my school was an exception because most schools I’ve visited (I’m an education major I had to visit several schools to observe classrooms) were dirty and kids just left trash on the floor. It’s awful and we definitely need to teach these kids how to clean up after themselves!

Students in Russia don't buy cleaning stuff. But their parents are giving money to their classes' funds (each fund to each class) for needs like buying desks or buying new blinds for windows. This gives "fund raising" things gives a great opportunity for principles of school to get corrupted.

Actually, in Russia students still have to clean classes with their supplies. It was set as a rule literally this year because schools, as we were said, didn't have enough janitors

About cleaning the class at the end of study day in Russia, this is a complete bullcrap. Cleaning the class is the responsibility of the school janitor or student volunteers. Nobody can force students to clean the class, otherwise it's a violation of our education law

Us in the Philippines actually buy cleaning materials for our classroom like Russia. We also clean our own rooms after school hours. The main reason we do all of this is because our education system doesn't have enough budget to restock every classroom with cleaning supplies that us students use to clean.

Russian guy here. I have never heard about anyone buying such school supplies. As far as I know, most schools have janitors now. Though sometimes teachers do make students clean up classes or school territory in general. In my school every week they would appoint a “responsible class”, which ment that students from that class had to keep order and tidy up after lessens were over For context, I entered school in 2009 and finished it in 2020

I'm a Russian. We don't have anything to buy or smthing. Some days (nearly once a half year(and even more rare after 5th grade)) we had activity named "class cleaning", but everything(cleaning stuff) is given by teacher, not us (and also it was bought by school)

I am from Russia and it was never mandatory to clean our classrooms every day. Normally, we would do that on the last day before holidays and not after lessons but instead of them. We also didn’t have to buy the supplies, the school had their own

i think it's great to have to clean the classroom and school; it teaches responsibility, work ethic, taking care of things, taking pride in your school, and you're not likely to litter, deface, trash something or disrespect what you've used your own hands to care for and maintain.

The cleaning supply thing doesn't really happen anymore, if anyone's curious. Well, maybe somewhere it still is, but throughout my 11 years of school, i've never heard of such things happening not just in our school, but to anyone really. In fact, we would face minor disciplinary action if we were to somehow access them (they were locked away in a storage chamber in the bathroom), which was unfortunate as we were always quick to run out of soap, although it totally makes sense as this is a potential health and safety hazard (the same reasoning they used to limit all of the exterior food for us). That being said, the broom was always there for us, as students would spill their drinks so often that the janitor couldn't keep up

Nowadays it not really mandatory, but from time to time they politely ask students clean their own classrooms, which more or less help with making people not make classrooms into trash place. Their own classroom count as second home, considering how much time you spend in it, so it pretty reasonable.

Japanese students also clean their schools, it's honestly something that should be mandatory in all schools all over the world. Kids will learn to not litter and dirty up the place when they have to clean it.
