Excellent. I was thinking of buying one of these units and this may have just convinced me to do so. I have two solar ovens (one home-made and the other is an ASSC) and I have a parabolic dish cooker. This would be a great way to round out the "fleet". Thanks for posting! Ken

Hello from Colorado! Good video, I like that you showcase a solution (a solar stove) which solves a deficiency (no stove in your current home) as you build your home. Very well done, and the brownies will likely entice everyone else who may not find the coolness of a solar stove to be interesting enough. Keep it up, thanks!

hey just wanted to say, the portable BBQ you have on the outside of your camper, it also can double as an oven, just line the shelf/grate with aluminum foil, and can use backing trays that are meant for toaster ovens. and they work great! just put a small cooking thermometer thru the side of the lid and adjust the flame for the temperature that you need. so if you want to bake and dont have solar, you can still make, pizza, cookies, brownies, cakes, pies, roasted meats and veggies, french fries, and basically anything else you would bake in a normal oven.

+Steve We were pumping out the videos for a while but now that we have our basic needs met more or less, we're shifting focus to our online business as we've taken 6 months off from work, so there is a bit of clean up to do! I think some of our bigger projects are on hold until spring, but hopefully we can get some good work done on the nicer winter days, like milling the rest of our lumber and finishing our hot tub deck! Glad someone notices if we're missing... haha! We are definitely enjoying North Idaho and all that it has to offer, and we're really hoping for more snow!

have you worked with a dutch oven? you can bake almost anything in that with a heated base source/fire and some coals on top. Let's see, pies, buscuits, cookies, brownies, roasts, baked beans... growing up in the pnw, we did outdoor cooking on a regular basis. cast iron becomes your best friend. during super storm sandy here on the east coast, we were able to easily just keep on with our family meals without really missing a beat... and we just used our wood stove.
@KiwiCatherineJemma7 жыл бұрын
Here in the Southern Hemisphere, we have cast iron cooking pots similar to what you folks call a "Dutch Oven", referred to as an (Australian) Camp Oven When I left Australia, I cleaned and (cooking)-oiled mine before packing it for the trip to NZ (although once here, I saw they were available here anyway).

You can take the warming pan out of a regular oven and use the now empty area as a firebox and use the oven to bake in as normal. Which might be option on cloudy days. The brownies looked great!!!

Wow that's an awsom oven, we tried our own version takes a bit of time but worth it. Its Feb 10 2016 our sunset is at almost 5:30 now :) Summer here is so wonderful it doesn't get dark until 10;30 or more on the longest days by the way lost of sun. Just wanted to say that we recently got a Coleman oven that I can bake with in inside on our wood stove, a little slow but works.

That solar oven certainly has an odd shape for the cooking tray. Certainly limits what you can cook in there. There are other styles of solar ovens that are more cube shape and allow for cooking of larger items in conventional cookware. Those brownies did look good. I am partial to the Ghiradelli Chocolate brownie mix that is available at Costco.
@purelivingforlife8 жыл бұрын
+bwillan You're right that it has an odd shaped tray. It does limit what you can cook (like you couldn't cook a traditional pizza in it, you'd have to shape it differently). I'd be curious to know the pros and cons of this stove compared to other sun stoves. Maybe the odd-shaped tray helps it to cook quicker instead of having a large, square tray. I'd be interested in testing out others as well but maybe in summer! I'll have to try the Ghiradelli brownie mix if I get a chance. I actually like just making them 100% from scratch but sometimes it's nice to just do it the easy way, especially if I don't have all the ingredients on hand! In the end... when brownies are good, they're GOOOOOOOOOOd, and when they're bad, well they're still pretty good lol.

My father milled his own lumber from oak and cyprus to build 2 houses. The lumber he used was 'green' and he discovered the hard and expensive way, when fresh cut lumber is not dried properly by air stacking it warps. He discovered lumber used before it was dried properly results in walls, floors and doorways that are not exactly straight because it tends to warp in lengthy locations. Like you, he started with building a barn, but learned the hard way to wait on his green lumber to dry before using it to build as finishing lumber. To build your home from lumber harvested from your land, you might be wise to talk to a local saw mill or local contractor who builds custom log cabins to learn more about using freshly cut lumber from local trees. Some trees produce more desirable lumber than others. Also, you might investigate the American Made SUN OVEN is an awesome solar stove that allows you to cook full size birds, roast, pots of food and even 2 doz. eggs at a time without water.

A backpacker allows you to bake without an oven as well. It's just a metal grid that creates a platform for the "cake" to rest on above water to be boiled inside a pot. It's not the prettiest, which makes it perfect for camping, and cheap too. For a little bit of nothing it would be easy to fashion snaps into something similar - real DIY style.

awesome, would love to have a play with one of these. can I suggest buying a silicone cooking mat/sheet. cut it to size to suit the gosun, then you won't have to keep buying foil, stop creating waste and most importantly you'll lose less of the brownie due to non stick properties. can get silicone sheets very cheap these days ($2).

These vacuum insulated tubes have a very strong potential to explode due to sudden temperature changes. I had one. It would boil water with no reflectors. It would bake and cook also unaided. One day I cooked turkey and all was well.... I removed the cap from the tube to let the pans of turkey cool before removing them and a few minutes later kaboom! Instant Turkey infused with solar tube. They explode and can cause injury. So I would not recommend using vacuum insulated tubes for cooking and encourage very cautious use or no use of these tubes in general.
@walterpalmer27498 жыл бұрын
Potatoes, carrots, meat loaf?, hot dogs, boiled eggs( in water bath), quesadillas (pre made) burritos ? first come to mind for easier cooking in your solar cylinder because of shape and ease to mold to the cylinder.
@yonihales91336 жыл бұрын
the largest profit margins is apparently this companys goal, you can purchase these same kind of vaccume tube solar cookers over seas for 1/4 of the price. To bad they dont sell for a modest profit margine, it would be much more popular here is the states and greatly impact the enviorment positivly, shame profit seems to be the bigest drive for this company

Hey Lori, I'm not sure how much Pure Living paid, but I got both of mine for about $350 because I bought the "Pro Pack" which comes with an extra cooking tray and a nice carrying bag. The base price is $279 and you can get a $25 discount if you buy through one of their Ambassadors. I'm an ambassador, but it wouldn't be proper for me to share my code on Pure Living's channel.

Thanks so I ch for your info, I wonder why they charge so much for it ? I'm sure they make it for a fraction of the cost ! I guess that's just a he name of the game you know what I mean :0)
@PrepFX7 жыл бұрын
Hey Lori, You'r very welcome. Yeah, what you're really paying for is the innovation and all of the upfront costs for bringing this product to market. Anytime a new product comes to market, it's always more expensive in the beginning. Computers were the same way. I know they spent a lot researching and refining the designs, not to mention the costs of finding reliable manufacturers. One thing I appreciate about GoSun is that they've been quite transparent about the challenges they've faced making their products. They've had multiple manufacturers that they've had to replace because they were making poor quality parts. That means they need to spend more money and time finding a new manufacturer plus fronting the costs for the new manufacturer to begin stamping out whichever part they'll be making. Anywho, it's been lovely chatting with you. I hope you have a nice night. :-)
@lorisanford85157 жыл бұрын
Right...I didn't know that they were new that would make sense like you said everything is like that in the beginning. I'm a newbie to all of this stuff but I love learning about everything and I'm just starting g off slow with cheaper things right now...baby steps :0) thanks again for your I nformation

I'm glad I could help. Welcome to solar cooking. It's a lot of fun. I'm surprised each time I cook a meal with the sun. You take for granted how powerful it truly is. If you don't mind a project, there are lots of tutorials on KZfaq where people make their own solar ovens inexpensively and they hold a lot of food. it's a great introduction to solar cooking. The GoSun is convenient, portable and cooks faster than your standard box shaped solar oven, but that doesn't mean the box ovens aren't still a ton of fun :-). All the best to you in 2017!
