The NFP alliance on the left became the largest force in the French parliament, but did not secure an absolute majority in a surprising outcome that saw the far-right National Rally (RN) drop to third place.
The NFP won 182 seats in the 577-seat parliament. President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance won 163 seats, and the RN won 143 seats.
Former Conservative special adviser Charlie Rowley joins Talk’s Julia Hartley-Brewer to discuss this further.

@@pragmaticmediator the majority of people didn’t vote for these clowns. They don’t even have a majority to form a government. Even with all the secret political manoeuvring they did after the first round. The majority of French doesn’t want a left wing government but the right is divided in 3 parties that won’t ally with each other. The left has managed to create a single party to concentrate more vote. Still, there won’t be a left wing government and if there is, it will be the most unpopular government in the history of the 5th republic. If our government, civil service, Border Force, Royal Navy and police between them can't stop the boats, then I suggest a) they are not even trying, because b) they have no intention of stopping them. I live in France and had a chat with one of my neighbours the other day about the election of yesterday. She told me should couldn't vote extreme left or right and thus wouldn't vote at all. She cannot be alone in this and I wonder what the voting numbers/turnout was like compared to previous elections.

Good news tbh, but obviously some stability is needed. Le Pen and her friends have been democratically un-chosen for this.

Its not a political crisis, as such. It's an immigration crisis... The two individuals with their casual approach to discussing such serious matters - all smiles and smirking - give the impression that the destruction of a once highly civilized and beautiful country is of little consequence... just keep on smiling, Julia...

The French system seems complex. Can anyone give me a brief summary of what has happened ? Did the people vote for these alliances or did the parties form alliances after the vote ?

Name some democratic nations which aren't divided to a greater or lesser degree. People seem to be dissatisfied everywhere. I sometimes wonder how successful the Russians and and Chinese have been in creating such widespread dissatisfaction. I think a lot of people need to get a grip. If it were only the poor I'd understand their motivation, but when well-off people are dissatisfied, one wonders.

This will be a good test to see how a Corbyn government might have been. If they do well, a lot of people will have to eat humble pie, even in the labour party
