It's WAHOO MADNESS on the high seas! We're 10 days into our 3,000 nautical mile voyage across the Pacific Ocean, and King Neptune is about to bless us with our most exciting moment of the trip yet...After downing a lunch of freshly caught fish tacos from a skipjack we snagged that morning, the crew was getting lulled into a food coma/siesta mode with the rolling of the boat. But we sprang to life when we heard that unmistakeable sound.....FISH ON!!! We hook an absolute MONSTER that puts our fishing skills to the test. After prepping the fish and managing to fit the obscene amount of wahoo into our fridges and freezers, the only thing left to do is enjoy the fruits of our labor...a catch and cook fit for kings with some fat and juicy wahoo steaks!

Absolutely stunned at you. Modern aluminum cans are chemically treated with a plastic coating. Pop cans, or soda cans, are typically treated with a plastic coating that protects the aluminium material of the metal container from the potentially corrosive soda drink that is held within.

Stunned? Cut open a Coke can, and tell me how much plastic is in it? Not only that, but sand and saltwater are both highly abrasive and corrosive, and will break the cans down to nothing. Hydrothermal vents in the ocean floor spew out hot brines that contain metals... massive sulfide deposits containing manganese, copper, zinc, etc. Metal just comes out of the ocean floor naturally, and has been for billions of years. The planet is one big natural recycling plant, so complaining about this makes about as much sense as complaining if someone threw a beer can into the sun.

I agree with the comments below about the aluminum cans getting tossed overboard...not good. The glass on the other hand I think in deep oceans will become sea glass eventually or possibly provide a new home for a deep sea creature in the depths or become a coral reef some day. When I lived on Maui I saw the southern cross from Makena Beach....once you see it in the sky you know exactly what it is without a doubt. May you have fair winds & calm seas on your journeys. Indeed. Glass and aluminium are precious comodities which are quite well recycled. It's a shame to see them wasted. Besides, the aluminium cans are covered in chemical inks. Even if it's a drop of pollution in the ocean, there's no need to add this one which can so easily be avoided.

Long-term vicarious fan here. I'm stoked to see Delos on the high seas again. This cruise to French Polynesia reminds me of your days in the Indian Ocean when I first stumbled on your channel. Bravo Zulu! You are truly inspirational! Equally important, Nugget is adorable, and I'm impressed by your parenting skills. I would like, however, to address one thing, and I hope my words will convey my good intention. When you speak about and display throwing cans overboard at 3:23, please note that all aluminum cans have a coating of a thin plastic layer on the inside to protect sodas' phosphoric and citric acids from reacting with the metal. Equally, the printed branding on the outside is made of toxic inks and covered with a super-thin layer of plastic. Thus no aluminum can these days is aluminum-only. In throwing one overboard, you inevitably - albeit unintentionally - put the plastic into the ocean. And, while a can will corrode and might dissolve eventually, the plastic layer on it never will. I am not criticizing you. I am not pointing fingers. I am only pointing out something I believe you can do without. I am also not nitpicking here; the natural world needs us today more than ever. There is enough space onboard Delos to store those cans while sailing and dispose of them later on the land. In light of your overall environmental consciousness - which, as far as I could tell, is exemplary - I believe you could and should consider this. Again, I hope my words in this comment will be able to communicate nothing more than simple care for nature from an environmentally conscious person. Have a great time! I will be looking forward to your next video! Actually, I'm already impatient! :)

I guess it is knowledge that is missing. Here are some facts: An aluminum can submerged in the ocean can take up to 200 years to degrade. However, it's important to note that aluminum cans are not purely made of aluminum. They often contain plastic linings and coatings, which can last indefinitely in the ocean. Also, the logos on the cans are made of toxic inks, which can contribute to pollution. Therefore, it's not advisable to discard aluminum cans in the ocean. So keep that in mind so I can keep sponsoring you guys with beer. 😉

Two hundred years is the blink of an eye on this scale, and the ocean is so vast that all of the cans on the planet would be irrelevant, if you dumped them all at the same time. There is without argument a problem with cans and glass. Neither is a less environmental problem however glass requires substantial amounts of energy to make and it’s one of the easiest to recycle. Cans can be crushed and stored until appropriate recycling can be found. These form a valuable resource to some people as they collect them and cash them in. There is never an excuse not to recycle.

@@Pixelplanet5 must be an American thing. I’ve just had a look at 3-4 different alum cans here in Australia and none of them have any discernable plastic coating. What I do know is that they last barely a week in sea water. They just corrode to nothing. Especially if they’ve got a dissimilar metal in them, like a brass or steel screw, or pop rivet shaft, etc
@Pixelplanet5
@Pixelplanet5 Жыл бұрын
@@PaulBKal they cant simultaneously be resistant to acid and also corrode to nothing within a week in sea water. also exactly that would not happen in sea water at all as aluminium in sea water would just form an oxide layer which would protect the material underneath. current estimates are that aluminium cans will last for about 200 years in sea water and the plastic will obviously remain there for much longer after the aluminium is gone. even a simple uncoated tin can will take about 50 years to break down in the ocean.
@PaulBKal
@PaulBKal Жыл бұрын
@@Pixelplanet5 they do! Put an empty aluminium can in sea water and see how long it lasts. Even full ones need to be very carefully stowed aboard boats to ensure their contents are preserved. Everyone who has ever owned a boat will tell you of aluminium cans disintegrating having come into contact with sea water. As to steel cans, I’ve seen them rust through in mere days!

Aluminum never degrades and becomes toxic. It is great for recycling. You should never throw aluminum in the ocean. We love your videos, and we appreciate how much you do to try and be kind to mother earth Glass also last for decades before it breaks up, but hopefully it will contribute to habitat the sad fact is, we really don’t know what it does to dispose of anything in the ocean. We have done a couple of Atlanta crossings, and we do not dispose of anything overboard other than organics. Just food for thought pun intended.

That's incorrect -- aluminum is easily abraded by sand (the ocean is full of sand), and saltwater easily corrodes aluminum. Sinking the cans into the ocean is just an natural form of recycling, that requires no electricity, whatsoever.
