This is Dan. I flew this flight at OSH 2017 and it was not during airshow. It was just one morning when it was kind of quiet and GA arrivals were on Runway 27 so runway 18 wasn't getting used for much. I asked for left circuits on 18 and it was approved, there is nothing insane about the flying. I fly this plane from the right seat so simple circuits on a very long 18 were not a problem. The turn in looks a bit sharper than it really was, but this was at ATC (tower) request in order to keep us well south of GA arrivals flying right downwind for 27. I don't fly this aircraft, I am one with it, and I sense each and every sound and vibration as it happens. It is a very harmonious method of flying gracefully and there was no high G, aerobatic, or dangerous aspect of this flight. This was very simple graceful flight operating the craft exactly the way Mr. Douglas designed it to be operated. Thank you for your comments. I will be happy to answer any further questions. I have given up airshows. I do not want a pilot to give up his life to entertain me. Yes, the crowd will roar and want more excitement to fill their desire to be entertained. There is never enough you see. A pilots life is worth so much more than the entertainment of selfish wishes.

My father made two one wheel landings during a thirty year career of flying DC-3's and C-47's. (they were landings due to damage to the plane during hazardous flying when an attempt to shoot it down resulted in damage to one engine). He said, "this damn plane can get through nearly everything. It may come in on its last leg, but, by God, it WILL come in"!

Agreed. Any operator one with their machine is a beautiful union, even if it is just a lowly automobile, or a diesel generator. Not many join deeply with a machine in a way that there is a, dep devotion to it and they know it so well. When we see an old man with just a 1976 Cordoba many think it is just an old man that bought an old car. But if the old man has had that Cordoba from when it was new, that is almost a mystical bond. What about a person that salvaged and has rebuilt the engines of an old boat 30 years ago and still has it running like new. That is much more than an owner and his machine. That is a person one with his boat and he knows every screw and bolt on it.

This video is great for those who dont recgonize the difference in sound between an opposed engine and a radial engine. Opposed engines are lighter sounding, putterier, and sharper. Radials are smoother, deeper and heavier sounding. They rumble, and have a nice rythym from the camring & counterweight rotation. And the ones that have roller valve tappets have the smoothest sound of all. Best heard on a proper surround sound system. Or, better yet, in person. :)

@XRP747E5 жыл бұрын
Left wheel had to suddenly accelerate from a static condition. The sudden weight put on that wheel when lowered was greater than a normal landing when the wheels can tickle the runway and accelerate more slowly. A DC3 can be made to land so gently that the passengers don't know exactly when touch down occurs.

Rotary engines actually rotate with the propeller. Radial engines are so named after the fact that the cylinders are racially placed but the propeller rotates on a crank shaft drive, the cylinders remain stationary. 1st we Sopwith Camel for example was rotary engined. Created a sharp turn to port due to torque.
