The packaging layout is an eyesore. If Glossier had put two shades as the top row and centred the third shade for the bottom row I'd be all for it. That way I could use my thumb to stabilise the compact when using the mirror. It would work for left or right handed people and you wouldn't end up accidentally press your nail in an eyeshadow pan.

@cinemaocd1752

Yeah, they could have done that so easily and sold single pans to go in the compact. Since the eyeshadows don't play well with each other, you could supplement with other brands. I have an old Aveda compact from 20 years ago that is quite similar to this packaging and it has stayed useful long after Aveda discontinued the eyeshadows.

I don't think the monochromatic trio concept is a bad, even if it's not for me, but I strongly dislike almost everything about the way Glossier did it.
@mondayglow9014
@mondayglow9014 2 жыл бұрын
This concept is similar to what Tati did with her Tati Beauty palette: several different finishes of the same color. I think her concept worked because the finishes were all quite distinctive and were part of a larger palette where they could be easily mixed with other colors for a variety of looks. I think if they limited these to duos (one matte, one metallic), they would be a hit. Plenty of people love making monochromatic looks, and using a matte in the crease/lash line and a metallic all over would make for a cool monochromatic look with a bit more dimension due to varying textures than using one cream shadow all over the lid, the way many people do.

The first time I ever saw that variation in texture at play was in a 90s Shiseido product named "Noirs+Noir". A trio of blacks masterminded by genius makeup artist/photographer Serge Lutens. It was the first time I experienced makeup in an intellectual, borderline pretentious, way.

Even though you spoke to it, it was funny to me that every now and then you’d call it a quad. I agree that it was a miss for them to package 3 shades this way. Looking at the packaging (closed or open) we are trained to assume it will be a quad. (For better or worse)

These palettes reminded me of Clarins round palettes and Viseart fours. I've recently received a Clarins one in 03 as a gift (it would never come to my mind to buy it). But I was so surprised and blown away by the formula that I'm considering to buy one more in another color. They do everything that Glossier doesn't - blend very easily, layer on each other, enhance the look of the lid, have a dynamic range.

Well, I would suggest to those people to just buy something from Lise Watier or Lancôme because their eyeshadows are very high quality but made for those who aren’t super skilled with makeup. In particular, for my international friends, Lancôme is really good in texture because their shadows blend out really easily and are easy to correct if you feel like things have gone out of hand. Now, for those who are on a budget - then CoverGirl’s eyeshadows feel very similarly to Lancôme’s texture. Also, there are plenty of small palettes that are easier to create a look with especially for beginners. Also, a lot of budget makeup has the shadows laid out by where to place them for those needing guidance. Same with Lancôme and Lise Watier. I find most people who _wear makeup_ but they aren’t that into wearing makeup. Sorry for the rant. Or BareMinerals new eyeshadows are great and more eco-friendly. Made from paper and recyclable!

I like to use the matte in the crease, the metallic on the inner half of the lid and the satin on the outer half of the lid. Blend slightly in the center and tap on some of the metallic and viola! They don’t have to really move over each other much and you get all three to build.
@ramblerjam
@ramblerjam 2 жыл бұрын
This makes sense. Even though I think you can use shimmers wherever, most people stick to a matte in the crease and a shimmer on the lids. And the textural dimension you describe is probably what Glossier had in mind. I like depth in the outer corners but that's not a look I associate with Glossier. However, the mattes don't look like they blend that well, which is a bummer if you wear it in the crease.

I like concepts like this, a monochromatic mini palette done in different textures. Viseart came out with quads a year ago doing the same thing. I bought one & really like it. Viseart's smaller palettes are all magnetized so they can be depotted easily. Of the colorstories Viseart offered in the quads, I chose Praline which is basically a midtone camel. I depotted it & added in a deeper, slightly cooler brown from a Viseart Theory palette (Cashmere) It is my grab & go quickly neutral eye. I haven't tried a lot from Glossier but I will say that Boy Brow is my Ride or Die tinted brow gel. Didn't care for their Brow Flick tho, I like the brow pen by Nyx much better. I love the overall aesthetic of Glossier, but I need my makeup to give me actual coverage, smoothing, blurring, etc so that my skin looks natural & perfected even tho it isn't.

Hi Hannah! I love your channel! Hope my message won’t disturb much 😅 I need to mention something related to plastic packaging. Sometimes the most sustainable option is not metal or glass even if at a superficial glance it may seem like it is. It depends on a lot of things. The carbon footprint of some of the alternatives is much higher making them a terrible option in terms of sustainability. Using post consumer plastic in some instances is a far better alternative. In some it’s not. The main point I am trying to convey is that we can’t make statements like “companies shouldn’t use plastic“ because it brings a lot of green washing in the industry. A just glass packaging company may actually be less sustainable then one that we deemed bad. Jen from the Ecowell discusses subjects like this with experts, I highly recommend her channel, podcast and insta. Since we have good intentions it’s worth digging deeper into this subject and making decisions and judgments with all the info in mind so companies can’t fool us easily or fool themselves easily in certain circumstances.

I just despise eyeshadows that don't play well together. I enjoy eyeshadows that work well on their own as one shadow looks but I like to have the option to do a structured look and a one shadow look. I do structured looks so often that if there's a shadow that doesn't want to layer with others, it just doesn't get touched by me. And if the intention was to have each individual shadow stand on its own, why do three identical colors? Because I could barely see a textural difference in the swatches for most of the trios. I could understand making a lil one shadow look compact with three different colors, like a neutral matte, a colorful matte, and maybe a grungey satin. Something like that for on-the-go or travel makeup would be quite brilliant and functional. It was like you said, a release without much thought.

Also, I know it seems counter intuitive but sometimes (emphasis on the sometimes) using plastic is less hurtful for the environnement than using cardboard or other polymers. It really depends on what plastic you use, in what quantity, what specific piece requires it, its durability in the final product etc There is unfortunately no simple straight forward answer as to wether one should use plastic or other material to reduce the impact on the environnement. Just a heads up, I know its not well known so I just wanted to specify it

The TEA ☕️ I’m not that mad at the bit of plastic in the packaging though. The plastic situation isn’t that black and white, really. A lot of the time it’s lighter weight, which means less carbon footprint to transport. But I would have loved to have seen a magnetic palette so people could buy or replace the individual shades and you wouldn’t even need the plastic holder in the first place. Ultimately the best individual way to reduce environmental impact is by not eating animal products, but people often don’t like to think about it because it’s deeply uncomfortable. Plastic pales in comparison to animal agriculture objectively, so I feel like it’s difficult to talk about environmental impact without that in the discussion tbh. But ideally reducing both where it’s possible can make the world a cleaner place. :)

Everyone, please double check if it applies to your region/country before deciding if meat consumption is as problematic as the popular narrative says it is. The early studies that it's all based on measured the carbon emissions of just the factory for a processed plant product or just tailpipe emissions for vehicles and compared it to the ENTIRE life cycle of the equivalent amount of meat, ensuring skewed data. They certainly didn't factor in that well-managed herds CREATE carbon-sequestering grasslands. The water usage studies have similarly laughably biased methodologies and never factored in things as simple a the fact that a cow pees most of the water they drink back into the water cycle. If you live in a place with largely grass fed, grass-finished, usually pasture raised animals that are raised locally, the US figures and ideology re avoiding meat for environmental reasons may not apply to you.
@mizshellytee
@mizshellytee 2 жыл бұрын
The US military is the world's largest polluter (there are several articles on this if you search) and so is a much bigger contributor to climate disaster than people consuming meat or animal products. Better to discourage young people from enlisting, IMO.

@@denisha8596 Even if it’s just the factory, most plants are farmed/processed to feed cattle, not to mention the land cleared for them. If you cut out the middle man, the animals, you wouldn’t have to grow those plants in the first place. So if you’re worried about the environmental impact of plant products, by default you would want to go vegan. And animal agriculture largely clears more carbon sequestering land than it creates. Look at what happened with the fires in the Amazon in 2020. Also, every farm is local to someone. Eating local doesn’t ensure good practices. In addition, animals have lives and feelings, which is an entirely separate argument, but there are ethical reasons not to eat meat. Anyway, the impact of animal agriculture is indisputable. Those disputing it are largely funded by the industry. The city of Berkeley is aiming to become vegan for a reason. In the end, the point was that single use plastic is a problem for sure but not singlehandedly destroying the planet. We could all reduce our consumption of many things to help the environment (fossil fuels, plastics, fast fashion, etc). Diet is honestly just a very easy place to start for *healthy, privileged* people in a capitalist, linear economy.
@denisha8596
@denisha8596 2 жыл бұрын
@@Viennafly1 Everything you said seems to link back to the popular narrative being American/1st world (although places like White Oaks Pastures had their carbon impact independently measured and their beef operation sequesters so much carbon that it points at the impossible burger and falls over laughing). In the rest of the world, ruminants are pasture raised for the vast majority of their lives and only supplemented/finished with the tons of the biomass we pour resources into growing but _can't eat_ (stems, leaves, husks, cores, etc) or that don't meet high minimum standards for _human_ consumption. Most countries just can't afford to subsidise corn crops etc to the point where the _whole_ plant is a viable source of animal feed. Countries are also prioritising growing veg for the *new, booming, 1st world plant-based market*, regardless of the consequences at the ground level because it is so profitable, so clearly the issue to curbing supply is to cut demand off at the knees. I've heard Brazilian ranchers say that they've been encouraged to relocated to marginal land and have sold their fertile land to soy farmers (that's who the WWF points to when it comes to deforestation - crop farms). I've heard Australian farmers talk about how they measure in _tons_ the animals they have to poison or shoot to keep crops viable (never mind what gets caught in the harvesting equipment) while their sheep only need a fence and a trained dog. Just because the death isn't visible on your plate doesn't mean there isn't any. My conscience prefers an animal raised humanely for the sole purpose of providing me with species appropriate nutrition and I refuse to pretend that I'm so superior to anything else on this planet that I'm somehow separate from the cycle of life and death. If anyone is experiencing the level of privilege that lets them turn their backs on the nutrient dense, saturated animal fats that built the amazing brains of homo sapiens in the first place, perhaps that privilege should be used to (a) change the profit-before-ethics abusive factory farming system (because “it’s not the cow, it’s the how”) and (b) notice that corporations are gleefully making money hand over fist by creating new industries to cater to the vegan movement because of the profit margins involved and the long term health consequences. [As someone who came off all medication, supplements, and vitamins and reversed a "chronic" diagnosis or two within a year of going plant-free/Zero Carb, I know I contribute nothing to the corporations so my way of eating is obviously going to be demonised and deliberately misunderstood as there is no profit in it for them.]

I bought almond, and it’s ok. I sort of view it as a different category somewhere between a one and done shadow and a small palette but I agree that it feels disappointing if I were to label it as one of the two so that is probably why I am categorizing it as in-between. I did realize this morning that the matte shade in Almond is suuupper close to the matte crease shade in the Ilia warm neutrals palette- which is a far better product and you get six shades (complete with deepening shades, liner, highlight, topper, etc). The formula of that palette is so great and the options and completeness of the palette is just so much more functional. I always liked that crease shade and I would say that almond is just a “smidge” cooler but not enough to justify having both. So anyways- if anyone is interested in almond but wants options, I recommend the Ilia!

Smidge back there on display with all your lovely accessories is delightful and I love her a lot. As for the packaging, with the convex squares on top I kind of thought that meant the bottoms would have concave dents so they would stack easily and not jostle around in a drawer as much. Or that they might snap together. Also the fact the mirror pops out makes me think you could place a tray of shadows in the other side. These could have been fully modular with just a little bit of shape change, which would have been interesting, justified the bulk, and also followed glossier's sort of easy, effortless beauty vibe. They could also come out with quad trays and then everything would have been swappable.
