Thanks for that, it all makes sense now. I hate wagglers , I'm always getting tangled, I often use a stick float instead so I can flick it out underarm and if I need distance a crow quill, I'm too clumsy for over arm casting, I catch too many trees. But the lifting makes sense.

Really enjoy your videos. I am a US angler, so I'm relatively ignorant of float fishing techniques compared to someone brought up in the UK! I really enjoy float fishing for small carp (up to around 10 lbs) in the neighborhood lake behind my house. I usually use a 12', light-action rod with 6-lb. test mono and an ultralight spinning reel. Your videos on waggler fishing (which is what I usually do) have been most helpful. I am still not clear on how you determine how much shot to put on a specific float. I use Drennan crystal wagglers, puddle chuckers, and loaded puddle chuckers,, but I am pretty clueless what the nomenclature on the float means versus specific shots. I have consulted tables, but it seems that in the US, many of the shot sizes listed in tables are not readily available.

Fishing shot names originally came from shooting. SSG swan shot, SG swan and goose, LG large goose and BB has something to do with duck shooting. These names go back a good hundred years as far as I know. A search for "shot conversion chart" on the Internet should yield results. Best of luck.

Another tip get a shotting tube and play around with the bulk shot the letters on the waggler ie (aaa) meañs it takes 3AAA shot at the base of the waggler to cock the float in the water you need to add more shot to get the float dotted down to get maximum sensitivity I do this with all my floats saves time on the bank happy fishing

Novice question, see on the float you are using it states 3BB on the float, you have 5 shot near the float and 4 further down with a small tell tale, what size are these as they are obviously equivalent to 3BB shot, Thanks

Good question, the tell tale is a No.6, all the other shot are No.4's. Two No.4's are equal to one BB, so you would expect to see a total of six No.4's and the No.6 tell tale. I have to put my hands up to a little editing mistake. The first time I show the shotting pattern with a close up of the shot, was filmed after I had dotted down. To get the float to dot right down took an extra two No.4's. So the rig is carrying more shot than you might expect. Also the stated float capacity is a little out, that particular float takes seven No.4's not six. But you have caught me out, I will have to make more effort with the continuity. Another kind of well silly question so i guess here it goes ..... Do fish mind if you fish a bigger float with proper amount of shots on it ? By mind i mean do they tend to spit out the bait if they feel resistance while they are nibbling the bait.I don't know if that made any sense.

It should not make any difference because the fish only needs to disturb the small tell tale shot to cause a bite.
