The transformer lives... Again! The main problem was the internal rectifiers in the x ray transformer tank went open circuit. I am unsure of the cause of failure, but I was informed that these diodes can fail due to an excessive amount of voltage. These x ray power supplies are really only meant to run for a few seconds. If you have a complete power supply of this type with DC output, remove diodes and use as an AC power supply. If you want DC, use rectifiers in a separate tank of mineral oil.

You can replace the diodes with microwave oven rectifiers. If you plan on charging capacitors add bypass capacitors across each one then add a resistor to act as a snubber.

The insulation is rated to 150kV and concentric earthing around cable. No chance of getting hurt. Plus remotely controlled :)

Oof. I reckon when the cap charged, the voltage rose above the max rating of the diode stacks. Resonant rise has taken the lives of many NSTs I've owned. Caps were always involved (tesla coil use). Interesting that it happened with dc though. Perhaps the ac ripple was enough. If you use a cap on a transformer like this, I'd suggest adding a properly tuned safety spark gap to prevent internal destruction :) good to see another vid! Cheers

Funny that It was charged to 25kV ballasted to 60W and then I went to charge it again and there was no output, signaling an open circuit, can't really tell what actually happened. I am positive that it was destroyed by an over voltage of some sort. A good friend of mine has a similar transformer and a similar pair of caps that he charges with his x ray transformer, he has not had problems yet. I think that a small and cheap HVDC power supply would be best to charge the cap from now on. Just to keep the big expensive stuff safe. :)

a good tip is mount a piece of steel on the end of the cable, so they burns instead cables. what type insulators will you hunt for in 2021. a high voltage pothead is very rare, so it will take a lot of time to do.

you look like a kid i went to highschool with, and epic arcs :D i also want to know more, and im thinking about buying one, from whatever website or company, is it okay to overvolt these pole transformers, can I plug it into the wall directly without variac? is there any cheap ones maybe like 0.5kva up to like 3kva or more (my variac is 3kva) and a lot others. i love playing with hv i've wired up 3 to 4 MOTs like few years ago and made some nice arcs like 6kV or 8kV, but one of the MOT secondary coil just popped and started arcing. i was sad about that cuz i dont like when they break.
@VariacManiac
@VariacManiac 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah. They can be found on eBay. I was able to get mine from a transformer company, but their process is time consuming. I'd recommend a 10KVA one at most. Don't plug them directly into a power source without current limiting as it'll likely weld the plug into the socket and will instantly trip the breaker. My 5KVA has seen 20kW and didn't sweat. You won't ever be able to overload these, power wise. These are meant for mean fault currents, but don't over-volt them too much, just to avoid destroying the transformer's insulation capacity. If you ever do buy one, you'll have to locate the nearest FedEx depot and have it shipped there for you to pick it up. Home delivery is much more expensive, because they'll need to bring a forklift. Just note that these won't hesitate to put you in the emergency room, or worse. They are a fantastic power supply though. :)

Hey, I was wondering how you find old powerlines to insulator hunt on. Ive wanted to hunt for high voltage stuff but don't know how to find old lines.
@VariacManiac
@VariacManiac 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you asked man! There many ways I find these insulators. If going out to hunt, bring a friend or family member and plenty of water. Good spots are to search for abandoned facilities(mostly old mining sites or factories that are old or abandoned). You can find them via google maps or road. Search the general area(especially around power lines), but be very cautious, try to do your business without trespassing, I don't recommend it. The next thing to watch for is dilapidated poles, they usually look old, crooked, and or some without conductors and insulators, some may be on the ground. You might just find something at the base of those poles. Keep in mind if there's one pole, there's more. Stay away from downed power lines. Another is if on the road, once again, search the bases of poles, just don't drive while doing that. Look down old and new transmission line right of ways. Keep out of private areas. Sometimes line workers leave old insulators behind. The best way to obtain power insulators is if you see a line being upgraded where they are taking down old lines and poles and putting up new. They might have a couple dumpsters next to where their working that might have insulators in them. Catch them during a break and see if they will allow you to recover a few. Just stay safe and have fun!

Another good spot is near power generation, especially around hydro dams, or in areas where there's power history, check areas on lines going that are hard to access by truck or machinery such as mountains and hills, what lineman is going to haul insulators out of those areas (me) lol! Be careful as that kind of land is treacherous. Be careful. Share videos of hunts if you can, would be pretty neat, and of course you should keep from telling locations.

The diodes was destroyed by the inductive kick back, to explain, the transformer gives only a couple milliamperes, but as you was having a big puls capacitor connected to it, and when you discarded the capacitor through the cables (even if the cables are short, they still have an inductance) you was having a tank circuit, the electricity was ringing between the capacitor and "inductor", the diodes was in parallel with the capacitor so they started to conduct when the polarity on the capacitor reversed obviously the diodes are only capable of handling a couple amps pulst but this big capacitor easily drive a couple 100 amps in to the diodes, so the diodes was annihilated Thumb up, good video:) Greetings Alexander

I had a feeling. Should have thought before I did, lesson learned, but luckily, the transformer lives! Glad I have guys like you to have an explanation and a better understanding on situations like this. I just figured they were too old, but your explanation seems more viable.

@@VariacManiac No problem, yes the transformer has definitely a much bigger value then the diodes, diodes are actually really easy to replace and no so expensive compared to transformer, a suggestion would be to add a safety spark gep to the transformer to protect it from a over voltage
