This is definitely my favorite KZfaq factory tour. Manufacturing for customer satisfaction rather than shareholder satisfaction for so many generations is incredible.

Emmerich is a perfect example of a company that gauges its days by the benefits it brings to the world over productivity and overall profits. There needs to be more companies in the world like that, and we need to support them. That journeyman tool chest has me itching to fly to Germany to buy one!

Speaking for myself, please don’t underestimate our interest in the house project. Even the “boring parts”!

Tears popped into my eyes when you opened that big box! The care, precision, beauty of each and every element blew me away. I love this company Laura. (I have a couple of E.C.EMMERICH planes). The fact they've been going so long and their tools are still sold 80% within Germany and 20% the rest of the World shows that they're very well respected and understood in their home Country.

I really appreciate companies like this that keep up the quality of their products, year after year, creating things that will last forever. They say a bad carpenter blames their tools, but it is also a lot easier to do excellent work when you have the right tools.

I am not a maker and actually have no desire to do the work you do, BUT I love watching others create and I love your attitude to your builds: never-ending potential and opportunity to learn. And I LOVED this episode so much: finding other like-minded craftspeople supporting the local economy and focusing on those relationships (it's not just transactional, after all), and quality.

Watching the shaper make those matching cuts for the plane foot was very satisfying.

I’m 71, live in the United States. My ancestors arrived in Baltimore, Maryland in 1867 from Leipzig. My great grandfather was 14 when he made to crossing. My grand father was a machinist for the B&O railroad. My father and uncle inherited his tools when he passed. They were both carpenters. I can remember several all wood planes. I wish I knew where they were now.

I am happy I am not hearing about the house because it means it isn't going wrong, but I am really really glad to get updates

The reason they invited you and not a television company to tour the factory is that you are both intrested and have knowledge about tools. They did a great choise, and what a great tour it was. Any factory that has a 60 year old tape dispenser still in use has my respect, they know that things should last. And any person that appreciates that is my friend.

Those are Beautiful Tools, the shape of the horn, it was cool to see, and that they went through the War, and survived, and that they are locally sourced in your own Country. And the way that kit was made OMG, It is SO BEAUTIFUL, spaced, the way everything is there, and it flips up, Genius

Thanks for sharing video of that visit. Having an engineering background back in the day I've always been fascinated by manufacturing processes and I felt your enthusiasm being there. I wouldn't want to leave ! I have an English made sliding bevel like that one - rosewood, brass and blued steel, with a matching try-square , purchased many decades ago as a schoolboy. Tools should be lovely as well as functional I think.

That shop had some incredible machines. They were MAKERS from long long before makers were a thing.thanks for taking us along.

That "hinge mechanism" on the toolbox is just magical.

I love everything about this video, but the hinge mechanism on the mini shop is almost as awesome as the leather bench hinge.

I remember an old video where artisans and workers were talking about their favourite tools and why they loved working with them so much. I think that a tool that feels just perfect in your hand, really makes a huge difference during the process and for the final product. In this time and age, where speed seems to be an unavoidable curse, it's so wonderful to see that there are established companies that still embrace the philosophy of quality over quantity and pride of your own work over monetary opulence.

If my husband were to ever visit that shop (or yours) I would never be able to get him back out the door!!! He absolutely loves wood and all the tools that go with it! ❤❤

Awesome. The specialized machines. The care and respect for their craft. The toolbox. The pantograph lathe. Those shavings! Beautiful. Life hack: try planing rough wood instead of sanding it. It's faster. A sharp plane leaves a surface so smooth that finish won't adhere to it, so if you're putting something on the timbers, you can still do little a sanding. As a treat.

My father treated himself to a number of ece planes in the 1970’s. I now own them and they are still like brand new and a pleasure to use! Love your video on the history, vielen dank!

I have owned one of their block planes for 40 years and I use it fairly often. I like it more than my steel block plane because it's lighter, it takes less effort to use. The toolbox you got looks good, but it's missing a saw, a drill, drill bits, and a mallet. Also, I'd swap the tri square for a combination square because a combination square has multiple uses.

I honestly think there's a Renaissance out there for old school quality and durable goods. People are willing to support a business that focuses on sustainability and quality.

I love to see a business that is committed to doing what they do in the most correct way rather than the most cost effective.

WOW That was the thrill of a lifetime to step into a shop that made everything by hand.Making hand tools for you or I , in a way carrying on old world traditions from hand written directions, choice of raw materials from a local source, machinery for each step of production,the finest "tech" person operating these machines to create such a a balanced product.Much to be proud of in labor and country.Finest Quality from start to finish. So much is lost in automation, time study cuts, outsourcing parts, layoffs.This episode truly was a Royal Treat !! You could have saved those handmade curly cues from planer and made a "doll" (ok mascot) for your shop, it could be it's long curly hair.

That toolkit is awesome. Love how much this company cares about their heritage and quality.

I have an e.c.e. Primus Plane!! When I was in my 20’s I worked in a shop where we used both power tools and hand tools. My boss told me it was the best. And it was. I have kept it in great shape. And occasionally still use it after more than 25 yrs. I keep it on my desk, because it’s my favorite tool. I don’t own any of their other tools, but I have used a couple of other e.c.e. Planes, they are such high quality. This episode was such a treat.

I can't even tell you how much I love well made tools. They are so beautiful. Thank you so much for taking us along on your tour. I was left wanting to see more.. better yet I would have loved being there in person and hearing aaaalll the history. Thank You!!

Oh, this is my kind of video...looking at hand-tools. I love planes, especially the old ones (I thought maybe I'm crazy .. .no, I don't think so)

I’ve just recovered a set of my great-grandfathers moulding planes. They’re made of boxwood and probably haven’t been used since the 1940’s, I guess they date from the late 19th/early 20th century. Apart from some surface rust on the blades, they’re as good as the day they were made.

Love this! I managed went to a local forge for work this last week and they're also a multi-generational shop that have been producing the same wrench since around 1850. It was so fascinating to see how some things haven't changed in hundreds of years.

These aren't just tools they are making...these are pure ART. It is so sad (for an old-timer like myself) to see how the quality of consumer goods has degraded over the years, all in the name of profit. It is so heart-warming to see that there are still companies out there that still believe in, and strive towards, "Customer Satisfaction" over mass production of 'cheap' goods. That toolbox you got there is a treasure chest. Cherish it. Protect it....

I'm a cabinett maker. (or was) trained in a one man shop back in late 60'th. I got very 'hungry'( can't find the right word) seeing that shop. Thanks for the tour back memory lane to a time where quality was king.

What a fab company! I have distant relatives (only went there once) who make wooden dowels near Munich from Beechwood sourced locally. It's a pretty cool place, they use the offcuts for heating their homes. The Dowel cutting machines are cool too. :)
