This product has a very Japanese feel to it. It's exactly the sort of random gadget they love.
The main functionality is to detect movement in its vicinity, and then when the movement has stopped it pouts out a small amount of ozone enriched air to combat odours.
Aside from its advertised use for a cat litter tray, it would also have uses in other areas like a fridge or cupboard where the opening of the door and other activity would trigger a burst of air sterilisation.
The ozone is created by the action of an electrical corona discharge, which splits air molecules apart into their separate atoms temporarily, allowing them to recombine in active forms like ozone (three atom oxygen) which is unstable and donates its third oxygen atom to anything in the vicinity, oxidising it in the process. That could be an odour molecule, fungal spore, virus or bacteria. The oxidation has the effect of disrupting things at a molecular level, reducing odours and damaging spores, viruses and bacteria.
It's an odd, but neat unit. For the technically inclined, it's useful to clean the little ozone generator from time to time or best performance. I tested the unit for a while, so the pattern on the ozone ring was caused by the strong oxidising effect concentrated in that area.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:- www.bigclive.com/coffee.htm
This also keeps the channel independent of KZfaq's algorithm quirks, allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

Believe it or not, a device with almost that description (minus the poop-detection) already exists and can be purchased. Or you could knock one up fairly easily, because they are relatively simple: The active component is just a little piezoelectric ultrasound disc, powered by a battery with a control circuit, making short bursts of ultrasound once every 10 to 20 seconds. If you hang one of these in your garden, ideally on a wall or fence above the flowerbeds, cats will never go near it. The ultrasound frequency is well above anything human ears can detect, so as far as we are concerned it's just a box which hangs on the wall apparently doing nothing. But the ultrasound is painfully loud for cats, hence why they stay away from it. Doesn't neutralize the cats as such, but does work for the intended purpose of stopping them digging in the garden. The downsides? It also affects dogs the same way, so it's not a great idea to use such a device if you have a dog. Plus of course any other creature which can detect the ultrasound - particularly bats, so it might even fall foul of bat protection legislation if you used one in an area known to be a bat roosting hotspot.

Thermal insulating rings are quite common around pyroelectric detectors in security devices to stop draughts from setting off the (very) sensitive pyro - the foam ring could be for that, particularly if the ozone generator is also producing a draught inside the device that might trigger the pyro circuitry.
@markfergerson2145
@markfergerson2145 6 ай бұрын
That foam ring could be there just to keep the diffuser dome pressed more or less firmly into the plastic shell so that it can’t be shoved into the circuit board. I don’t see it blocking ozone because most flexible foams go all crunchy and powdery on exposure to ozone, plus there doesn’t seem to be a clear path for ozone to get from the emitter to the rest of the shell’s interior volume. It’s probably not there to exclude light from the two LEDs because the detector’s passband should exclude their light anyway, but given the competence of at least some Chinese circuit designers these days, they may have thought it necessary for that reason.

Definitely seems to be air flow damping, and possibly filtering some of the 'light' from the coronal discharge if it can reflect around inside the unit - as you say the sensor is incredibly touchy given the tiny energies/photons involved.

@@richardmillhousenixon What do you feed them? Our cats used to have sachet food but when I saw the ingredients (they are all pretty much the same) and found that there was less than 5% meat in them, we changed their diet. They now have raw chicken wings (frozen from Tesco - the older smaller one gets some trimmed meat, the younger Bengal gets the fleshy bones and I sometimes have one or two - cooked), sardines in spring water (Sainsbury's) plus a vitamin pill (which they demand!). The effect on their 'output' has been incredible. When they had a dump before, it was atomic and everybody in the whole house knew immediately. After the change in diet, the difference was such that I forgot to even look in the litter for three days. When we added some biscuits to their diet, mainly just to fill in any dietary gaps, a bit of the pong came back but nothing like before. The additional benefits are that it is only about 40p per day per cat and there is nothing more satisfying than seeing a once extremely nervous rescued Bengal cat pick up a chicken wing and run off to his cave under the kitchen table. Also, maybe a false connection on my part, but there seems to be an awful lot of carbohydrates in cat food these days which is not part of a normal cat diet and a lot of feline diabetes.

Cats have a rather sensitive sense of smell and could easily get scared of ozone smell. If the ozone generator is close to litter box the cat is likely to pick a safer place to poop, like your bed or sofa. But at least the litter box will be sterile, I guess?

Maybe that's why it only activates once it stops detecing movement and until the cat comes back again the ozone is long gone.

I got one of these and despite the generous battery (tested to over 2500 mAh) it lasts only a couple of days. I've tried to place it facing different angles to avoid erroneous triggering but it really falls out fast. You're right about the slow charging too.

Do they do an industrial version of that because when my cat ( chillies ) uses her pootang box that thing would never combat the aroma that comes out of her pootang box.

The foam ring is obviously a skirt for the PIR sensor. You wouldn't put trousers on a PIR sensor, that would just be silly.

It is a poop detecting cat neutralizer, by the way in the shed I have a E-RAT-ICATOR rat trap, that is its name. Maybe for killing electronic rats hehe. It is an Australian made trap just one of the old snap trap things.

I told myself if I ever got a cat Id install a small UVC lamp triggered similarly to this. you get a hint of Ozone for the air and the surface of the litter becomes sanitized from the light itself. obviously that's not going to stop the odor causing bacteria but im sure it would do a number on actually reducing the smell.. and cleanliness

You're right, ozone gets very obnoxious after a while. I've been using a generator in my house and vehicles to "gas" them every now and then. Does wonders. Now when I go outside on a crisp clear day, it smells like ozone to me and I hate it!

I like to use old containers with holes in them and fill them half full with baking soda then after a month or so dump outside in the garden. Can get baking soda for about 1 usd per pound lasts over a year. Works for in the bottom of a garbage can or fridge or anywhere you want to soak up smell.
