Located in Surry Hills, just outside Sydney’s CBD, Provider Store is a Japanese inspired shop that stocks slow-made and functional homewares, with a studio at the rear for candle making, creating, thinking and more. Porter and Maple has worked closely with the client and owner of Provider Store, Tara Bennett, to establish a feeling that is akin to stepping inside a home. Specifying that she did not want customers to feel like they could not touch anything or have the store feel too precious, Tara provided a brief requesting for a Japanese inspired shop that felt lived in and encouraged people to walk in and pick things up.
Throughout the redesign of both the interior and architecture of the store, a focus was placed upon the products and how customers experienced them. Filled with an abundance of natural light and cool tones on the walls, the Japanese inspired shop is further complemented with warm timber flooring and shelving that enhance the feeling of being at home. Found in the backstreets of Surry Hills - chosen due to Tara’s fond memories of travelling in Japan, where she would discover hidden stores - Provider Store evokes discovery and has been designed as a place that people can stumble across.
Beginning eight years ago as an idea born in Tara’s kitchen, Provider Store encourages the use of considered homewares instead of fast fashion and products. Additionally, the merchandises in the Japanese inspired shop are skilfully made and celebrate craftmanship. Focused on telling the story behind the products - including how, when and where the products are made - Provider Store encourages the thoughtful process of buying goods that will last a lifetime. Moreover, adding to the history of the Japanese inspired shop is its colourful background; once a showroom, a bakery, a strip club, a club and even a real estate agency, the store and studio space have a deep history that has been reimagined for a new clientele and generation.

I love how she talks about her community and the tradition of passing on skills. It's a lost art in modern times. I am trying to learn how to knit, my aunt is teaching me, next I want to learn how to do embroidery. My mother in law loves to quilt and years ago I was gifted lessons on how to quilt, all by hand, no machine. I am teaching my 8 year old daughter a few simple sewing and knitting skills. I hope that Tara's store keeps all these lovely traditions alive 😊

The community spirit that Tara has created extends well beyond the walls of the store. Provider has become part of the fabric of Surry Hills and Tara is a true local legend 🙌

Wow. First I was blown away by the store and thought I’d love to just go in and browse and then I saw the studio and thought I’d really want to work in that space. Beautiful and inspiring. I spoke too soon! Now I see the house. Dear me, I’d live there.
