This week, we visit a very interesting home in Bedok that also doubles up as an intimate studio (Studio Somayoke). Homeowner Yoke Wen was first taken in by this 3-room resale HDB home in Bedok because of the unobstructed view that stretches till the CBD. It was in an original condition with 721 square feet of space, but she had one of the bedrooms knocked down to form a large living instead. The result is an open form that is done up in a “imperfect” Wabi-Sabi style that was partly influenced from her time in the Himalayas (she even published a photo journal book).
As part of the style, her wooden dining table is also upcycled from Taobao, that used to be part of a door frame.

I love the 'less is more' vibe. Sincerity, humility, living within one's means, not needing to keep up with the latest trends, and designing a space to grow. A sustainability and low-consumption ethos fit for the planetary emergency we're in. More of how singaporeans are doing this, please!

love this type of living in interviews, where we actually get to hear homeowner's own story behind their space, and their thought process, not so much tips and tricks. the ones with the jardin (architects father-son), the balestier designer couple, the diy tiktok couple and the guy with the zakka house had the same kind of storytelling which sets them apart and brings out the true "living in" vibe. hope to see more!

I love the floor chairs & low table in the living room and the foldable futon in the bedroom! It's exactly how I would like to live in my future home. On a side note, the presentation of this video reminds me of Never Too Small XD

This is how one should feel about their home when coming out with a design, it should instill a personal connection to the owner to the extent that it is almost a part of who and what you are. A home should be a reflection of who you are.

3:43 Finally, someone recognises it is a "flat" and not "house". Many are ashamed to call our HDB flat a "flat". Instead, it is a "home". In London, a-few -million-dollar flat is still a flat.

We think most people refer to "home" not in the physical sense that it is a "house" but more of a place they live. So their flat is their home, even in a condo or landed, it's still their home. On the ground, we don't feel that people are ashamed to use "flat" - some use "HDB" instead of "flat" too. We suppose it's just down to what people are used to.
