Saturday morning, July 2, 2016... in the ocean outside the surf line and inside a rip current... kicking with my fins against the lateral current and not making much headway while holding the GoPro camera and filming it... A KZfaq "Public" video. Santa Monica South between Lifeguard Towers #28 and 27.

Years ago I was taken way out by a rip tide. Didnt panic...didnt fight....doggy paddled parallel with the shoreline. Once free from the rip tide.. ..I doggy paddled from one wave to the next....eventually reaching safety at the shoreline. Yes...Im a very poor swimmer....but I never panicked or fought the tide. I will say....I was quite a distance away from where I started to where I ended up on the beach. Swim parallel to the shoreline....take your time....its not a race and the incoming waves will help you to safety.

If you're not a good swimmer and not experienced with breakers and rip, waste-deep on an ocean beach with breakers can be a problem. Once quick moving water gets up past your thighs it can easily push you in directions you'd rather not go and even take you off your feet. Combine that with inexperience, lack of swimming skills, a good rip and the inevitable panic and you're in trouble. Seen it happen too many times to count.

It was probably about 15 - 20 feet deep where I was floating in this particular rip current. Notice that I am wearing swimming fins. Always a very good idea to wear fins in the ocean. After all, Mother Nature is in charge out there. The rip current is the result of water rushing back through inshore holes in the surf line. At this beach a set of waves will crash on shore and then the water will seek to get back out to sea. A lull in the sets of waves occurs and that is why you do not see the waves in this video shot from the surface. From the shoreline if you were to observe the conditions you would be able to see the sets of waves followed by a lull during which the water rushes out away from shore. It will not pull you out forever. Just relax and do not fight the current. One strategy is to swim sideways or parallel to shore. Often there is a lateral current as well so you could swim sideways out of the rip and with the lateral current angling in toward shore. This particular rip current was fairly tame. Conditions can vary from day to day and from location to location. Talk to a lifeguard before you venture into the ocean, if possible. Do not swim alone. Wear fins! Know your limits. Remember not to panic and do not try to swim directly against the current of the rip as you will tire easily. In So. California, there are junior lifeguard programs that teach kids about ocean safety so that you are aware of the dangers and can take precautions.
@SuiGenerisAbbie
@SuiGenerisAbbie 6 жыл бұрын
As asked above, how far out or along, were you ultimately carried, from your starting point? Also, you mentioned that you were caught in a lateral rip. These are usually called side-shore currents. Those run parallel to shore, and are rarer than those rips which run perpendicular to the shoreline.

Some sort of flotation device is key if you are not a good swimmer... aka a wet suit, life vest, boogie board(at least thats what we call them ). Id much rather have something like a boogie board rather than fins( being that they give you alot more freedom of movement that the other flotation devices) seeing how im not the best swimmer.
@ahguillaume
@ahguillaume 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnbernardo8156 - I agree with you, a boogie board is a very good floatation device but without fins you will likely continue to float out to sea in the direction of the rip current as your hands will be glued to the board and you will only have your legs to propel you and most people have poor kicking mechanics. If possible, always use a boogie board with fins. Fins are man's (and woman's) best friend in the ocean. :-)

@@emigenetics2128 Same happened to my sister and I. We were in the water about half way from where most of the surfers were and we saw the wave coming. I've never been in a rip tide or rip current so we both were just bracing ourselves to jump when the wave came and once it did I remember losing my footing and going under. When we both came back up we were far away from where we originally were and it terrified us, I can remember that feeling of the current pulling us away from shore so clearly. I started panicking because I couldn't touch the ocean floor and neither could she. My dad was at the beach with us though and he saw what was happening. As he swam to us he kept telling us to not fight the current and to float on our backs and time our breath with the waves as best as we could. When he finally was able to get to us it took 20 minutes for all of us to finally get back on shore. It really doesn't matter how far out you are in the ocean, once the current gets ahold of you, it's very hard to get out of it unless you know what to do and even then it's still scary. I always try to be very aware of that now when I go to the beach

I've been in 3 rips but none like this one... Waves threw me around like a piece of rubbish, then dump my ass on sand and shells. Thought to myself "this is it mate" while gasping for oxygen. But I guess it's not my time yet. Today I can read wave patterns due to my marine biology background. Now I've possibly developed an IMTA (integated multi-trophic aquaculture) system - farming multiple species, regenerating native environment, co2 sequester reducing ocean acidification via seaweeds, and producing cattle feedstocks. Which this system is the consequences of efficient local economics.

If you have 7 foot ceilings like me, triple that and imagine how much aquatic wildlife is directly below your feet! Any shark around there sees nothing more than something edible moving around and in lightning speed he goes for it! Yeah, sure he'll quickly realize that what he just took a bite out of, wasn't quite what he was craving and spit it out, but the damage is done. Now, we are left bleeding to death, and the leg that he ripped off is now floating to the bottom of the ocean floor 20 FEET DOWN! If I thought it was difficult to get out of this rip 5 minutes ago with 2 legs, how the hell am I going to make it out with one leg and bleeding to death, with now dozens of sharks following their noses to what I am sure looks like a bucket of chum that someone has thrown into the sea for them! NO WAY! I'll stay on shore thank you!

Fortunately I am a dopey mf and didn't think anything was wrong except maybe I had lost concentration and curved away from the shore, and fortunately I was swimming parallel to the shore anyhow. is that really a riptide? that looks kinda ordinary tide to me
@Engineer9736
@Engineer9736 Жыл бұрын
Normal tides are very slow... They're linked to the position of the moon. Once a day you have high tide and once a day low tide. That water movement is so slow that it doesn't drag you at all.

HOW far out were you ultimately carried?

I was just cruising on my back and kicking with my fins. Perhaps a 100 yards out from shore. I have lifeguarded along this shoreline for over 40 years so I am familiar with these conditions. The surfer in the background that I am talking to is another beach lifeguard who was surfing before his shift that day. As an aside, when we get south swells, two things happen usually: (1) rip currents that pull you away from shore (out to sea; and (2) a lateral current (that's what we call them here in Santa Monica) (aka, side -shore current)... from the shore looking out to sea this is a current that pulls you from left to right (since the swell is out of the south).

@@ahguillaume You're really informative. And I'm sure you would've saved thousands of people. I guess, we can say, thank you for your service. I always have had this question. I hear about people taken away by the sea. But how far can the sea take you? And what types of currents are there that pull you? I only know of rip currents and normal undercurrent at the shoreline. As an alright swimmer, I think I can swim back 100 metres if that's how far away the rip currents take me. I don't know about the other kinds.
