This video was before Sears and Kmart merged. Also before Sears even had ties with Eddy Lambert. Back when Sears was fully stocked, and had a lot of customers. Fast Eddy ran all the customers away, and ended up with poorly stocked stores. I remember Sears as an employee who worked for them from 1998 through 2006. I left after the merger, and policies were changing to more like Kmart policies. They asked me to go from working in one location to three. One of the locations was 40 miles away. After I left, many of my co workers also left. Some of us are still working together today for another retailer. Also, after I left, people were telling me they had cut their commission pay in electronics, and appliances. This was one of the first moves made by Eddy Lambert to try and cut expenses at Sears. The move backfired when the seasoned, and experienced sales associates found better paying jobs elsewhere, and quit. Sears replaced those who left with inexperienced sales help, and their sales declined. They also started to face fierce competition for appliance sales from The Home Depot, Lowes, and Best Buy. By replacing those with experience in appliance sales with inexperienced sales associates did not help either.

For me it was 1999 to 2006. I started in electronics. I worked one season in hardware/lawn and garden before coming back as the Brand Central manager. The week I got promoted was the week of the merger news. I immediately knew my whole future just changed. It was so sad but memorable to stop by the Greensboro store this past week when I was in the area. It may be the last time I get to go to one.

I remember Sears lasts years like USSR with store inventory! This was avoidable fast Eddie did not need to buy K-Mart another CEO probadly could of done better.

Lampert isn't good at building things - only knows how to strip assets of their value, not how to grow more value out of already valuable assets.

I personally think what did sears in the most was their extremely high interest rates in their credit card and their aggressiveness with it. That resonates with people.

I worked at Sears from 2007-2016, quitting just after my 9 year anniversary. When I first joined I was so enthusiastic. I sold TVs and then appliances. The money was pretty good for a college job. As the years went on, though, the stores began to fall apart and hours were slashed. The chairman, Eddie Lampert, really bled the company of everything he could. They *always* prioritized paying out dividends to shareholders over investing in the company. Guess who the largest investor was? Yes, Lampert's investment company. My last role was hardlines manager. I worked 80 hour weeks because I was given so few hours to staff my departments. I will never forgive Lampert and his ilk for destroying an American icon.

Doesn't Lampert need to liquidate his own assets to save the company if he's in charge? What is his long term vision for Sears?

Department stores pre 2000 really did try to serve the customer & the customer was "always right." (worked for Macy's in '84 in college & Sears in '87) Even if the customer was wrong you really tried to come to a solution. Really. I can say both truly tried their best.

This is the best video I’ve seen on KZfaq. Instant memories for me working in electronics at Sears starting in 1999. It was the best retailer that ever existed. Thank you so much for sharing this!

The last remaining Sears on 95th st in Chicago Ridge just recently closed. :\ They had a great selection in coats & fleece-collar jackets. And the last remaining Kmart in Illinois on Harlem Ave closed at the start of the pandemic. One-level Walmarts are the closest thing you'll get to the Kmart vibe. There's one still remaining on Harlem Ave.

Ironically, 2001 was the first time my family ever went to Sears. Looks just the way I remember it. Even the 80's music playing in the background is on point.

I'm always in awe of people that had the foresight (watching it 20+ years later), courage (everyone looks at you weird) and money (video cameras were expensive) to just go and record a normal trip to the mall. How valuable it is now to our society and heritage and it's not replaceable.

I was a cashier for sears from 2013-2016 and I can’t believe the cash registers in this video are still using the same software from when I was a cashier. The software updated in 2015 to a more modern look

One thing I liked about the bricks and mortar of Sears was they sometimes invested in building long term, that fit the city and unlike fast food or Speedway tear down a building and rebuild in the same spot because it was an old model.
