Inside a TCL Roku QLED TV with the LCD removed

Deep inside a Roku TCL QLED TV (5 series 55S555, 2022/2023) I take this TV apart and operate the LCD separated from the backlight. You can see that it is actually partially transparent and see how the color filters operate to generate colors. Also I take a look at what is generating color in the back light unit (BLU) including the LED and phosphors and quantum dots. A new technology using an extruded QD part is used in this TV (xQDEF) which is pretty neat. Finally, some analysis of the color converting materials (QD, Phosphor) and looking at the full-array local dimming (FALD) capabilities of this TV.

The fact that this incredibly advanced display is mass produced and can be so cheap nowdays, says a lot about how far tech has gone, and people really don't appreciate as much as they should.

Cool video as usual. I'd imagine the red stripes on the rolling shutter are likely due the slow decay time of KSF red phosphorus. Pretty cool indeed.

mass market mobile oled doesn't use QD. Vincent teoh of hdtvtest did display analysis on an iphone 12 pro, and the underlying tech for iphone displays hasn't changed a ton between 2020 and today (in terms of color performance) so it's still relevant. Displaymate has tested the iphone 14 pro max but their data presentation and tests aren't fully industry standard for video workloads.

@@NanoPalomaki Yes. We need a miniLED tear-down. Would definitely want to learn how the zone control works if you can test that out. Please cover that aspect in detail if possible. That is the most interesting aspect. Be eagerly waiting for that.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the facinating world of TV. How different colors is generated for each subpixel. Does the backlight brightness change. Is liquid crystals used in OLED and Qdoled.

В настоящем OLED дисплее не используют жидкие кристаллы, будем надеяться что и не будут. То, что выпустил Samsung, это пародия на OLED.

LC is not used in OLED or QD-OLED, but in basically all other TVs made today (LCDs). Backlight brightness does change based on the content as you can see with the local dimming test at the end.

What happens if we cut the panel let say 5 cm from top ...to reduce the height of the TV (make it wide)....is still working?

Hello! I came across your videos while searching for Quantum Dot displays. After watching a couple of your videos, I came to the conclusion that QD displays could have blue LEDs as backlight (presuming the QD layer would then NOT consist of blue-sized dots) but there are also cases where the backlight is white, which is achieved by covering the LED with phosphor or laying it in close proximity to the light source. Are there any reliable sources that I can use as sources for a university assignment? I also wanted to know whether the liquid crystal is replaced by quantum dots in some displays as I saw structure diagrams where it's not included in the breakdown. Cheers!

LCs are not typically replaced by QDs, rather the QDs are there to enhance the color by converting blue to red/green and the LC remains function as it normally does. There are many review articles describing how QDs work in display technology, especially LCDs. Society for Information Display could be a good place to start.

Моя старая плазма Samsung показывает намного лучше, чем QLED😂 Но все равно спасибо за видео, интересно смотреть, как китайцы чуть чуть доработав LCD панель выдают её за новую технологию :)
