A wind turbine is a complex mix of engineering technologies. See how this is employed to produce renewable energy and keep the environment safe too.

This is going to sound really naive, but as a layman, I had no idea that these were so big or technologically complex inside. Thanks for sharing. GO, clean energy!
@HangTimeDeluxe2 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I just got here. Please, may I ask, what did you think was inside of them? How big did you think they were? I'm just curious. Most people use technology without giving it a second thought, but I've always been curious as to how the average person thought something, like a wind turbine, worked. Thanks!
@erossinema87972 жыл бұрын
As layman how could you not be aware of the complexities?
@thefloridaman6527 Жыл бұрын
@@HangTimeDeluxe I am a fairly technical person, but more with computers 😅 I thought: The tower is empty apart from cables and a ladder. The top consists of the rotor with fixed blades attached to the generator and a motor to orientate it according to the wind. The wind direction would be measured with a simple "weathercock" connected to a microcontroller controlling the motor. It's fascinating to see some details of these machines 😁 New ones apparently communicate with each other to adjust themselves in a way that optimizes not the output of each individual turbine but the wind park as a whole 👍
@perstaffanlundgren Жыл бұрын
These are not big! they are very small with today's standards! 250-300 meter wing tip top max height. Is not unusual in new prodjekts today. And often more than 50 units in the wind park, at least sea based installations.

I never knew these were so complex inside! I thought it would be a blade, connected to a drive-shaft and to a generator. Maybe a few regulator circuits. I had no Idea they would have a lift, and lights etc inside! Could almost live in one of them!
@icecl0ud5 жыл бұрын
They come in a range of sizes. The small ones are essentially a rotor -> gearbox for overdrive -> shaft -> generator.
@dancoulson65794 жыл бұрын
@Andre McGoo In super strong winds, they actually shut themselves down for safety too. The turn the pitch so that the wind will not try to rotate the turbines, and then apply a brake to the blades too, slowing them and holding them in place.

Andre McGoo they are not totally insulated. It’s is just a big lightning pole. The turbine is bonded which is completed different to insulated. Turbines are rated in m/s not miles per hour. Turbine is rated to approx 74 m/s where it will either uproot and rip out the foundations or fall over. Normally don’t write stuff on here but as you tried to berate another individual I thought I’d let you know how wrong you were.

That elevator should have a secondary safety Incase it ever free falls. Probably some kind of mechanism that only moves up and down at a certain speed. A free fall would cause it to lock up like a car seatbelt. I climb cell towers and I'm always attached to the cable with a slide that only moves so fast. You can only fall 6 inches with a cable slide even climbing too fast will make it lock. It's high tech stuff

It looks a little too comfortable in there. Wind is competing well for cost with fossil fuels today, but it looks likes some cost could be taken out with a more spartan interior. Put the money into reliability and up-time, so workers don't need to make the climb often.

At the end this guy said that these are directly hooked up to a National Grid, so one thing I don't understand is this: let's say we don't have National Grid and a farm of these turbines should power a city which needs "X" MW to be powered up, however farm of turbines producing "X+Y" MW, so what happens with "Y" excessive energy produced by a farm of turbines?
