Thorpe St Andrews Mental Asylum Norwich. Part 2.
Built in around 1881 on the site of a cricket ground and known as St. Andrews Asylum Annexe these buildings were part of a separate auxiliary asylum for the main Asylum which was several hundred yards to the south of this site which can still be seen in it's entirety, although now converted into residential propertys.
The buildings were to be of ‘somewhat plain, simple and comparatively cheap construction’, later described as ‘a sort of go-between the Asylum and the Workhouse’.
Designed by the architects Cornish and Gaymer, they were modelled on Metropolitan Asylums Board institutions at Leavesden and Caterham. They comprised a two-storey ‘H’ shape with large and rather barn-like male and female wards linked, or rather separated, by an administrative cross-section, behind which lay a single storey complex of kitchens and staff rooms.
Costing £33,920, they accommodated 250 patients, two and a half times the original capacity. ‘Chronic lunatics, imbeciles and idiots’ were placed under the care of Hills’ assistant, who became resident medical officer, a head female attendant and a relatively modest staff of attendants and nurses.
Closed in 1998 along with the majority of these type of institutions it was used as offices until it's final closure in 2007. Most of the building was demolished in 2013 ready for development but it still sits in it's current derelict state.

I decided to walk to this place yesterday only to find that it's no longer there. The old hospital building is now completely demolised and what remains there now is piles of bricks and rubble. It's interesting to see some of the floor. But it is a real shame. I did see a video the day before where a fire had broken out probably caused by arsonists and the building was badly damaged. The morgue is still there though. I walked a long way to get there as I live about a couple of miles away from Thorpe St. Andrew. I had to get there from Riverside past the football stadium at Carrow Road and I had to use Google maps on my phone to know whether I'm heading in the right direction.

Yeah sadly late last year the remaining building was burnt down but it was only a matter of time I suppose.. some people out there have no interest in the history of places like this.. I guess at least now the developers can get on with whatever that have planned.. Shame you didn't get there before the fire, it was a rather splendid building to see.. 😥

Hi, thank's, interesting video. I trained as a RMN there for a short time in 1976. I was mainly on the south side where there was also the nurses accommodation. Where you were through the tiled main entrance If you turned right there was a big room where patients socialised. The wards were mostly long corridors with cells on both sides, you could tell which ones were padded cells, these had rounded corners. The north side was originally for male patients and the south for females. I believe that the population was more than 1000 on each side. There was a bridge between the two sides over the Thorpe Road and every Sunday the men would be escorted to the church and join the women. There was a toilet by the bridge and every man would want a pee and this way have more time out of the wards. There were 3 mental hospitals on the outside of Norwich, Hellesdon and The David Rice near Drayion were the others. Up until the 50s a door was closed near the end of the long corridor in The David Rice and this became an operating theatre for leubotamies and top leucotamies. This was carried out I was told by the padded cells and near the office on the male side. I remember that ward 4 on the south side had a cage built outside in the garden especially for one man who was a danger to the public., I was warned not to talk to him. Another two men on ward 3 {medium long stay) got on really well. One was a masochist and would wind the other up who would punch him as he didn't have a conscience. There were real characters there. in the 70s small shared flats were made for patients above the main entrance in South side of Thorpe hospital. This was for patients who were quite well but couldn't leave because they were so intitutionalised.

I was so pleased to see inside the Asylum, thank you. My great grandfather worked there. On the 1871 and the 1881 census's he was living in Thorpe with his family, and was listed as 'Engine Driver At The Lunatic Asylum'. Probably not where you were looking, but it all adds up to making my family research more interesting. My grandmother used to tell me how she would stand at her garden gate and watch the poor unfortunate people going past, along the lane, until her mother called her away...

Hi there thank you so much I've always wanted to get a closer look at the hospital. I want to share an experience I once had near the hospital. I was brought up In a place called Brundall. Its not far from Thorpe, when I was 6 My mum used to work in the pub called The Swan in Thorpe. My mum would take me and my sister there some days while she worked. she would drive past the hospital to get to work , for people that don't know the hospital is near a roundabout when I was 6 the roundabout wasn't there it was built years later, its off one of the turnings off the roundabout then there's a long straight road where you can see the front of the hospital all the way down the road. As my mum drove past I would get the chills every time we went past. Years later I was about 17 at the time would of been 1997 so I guess it would of been shut then. I was taking my dog for a long walk I had moved to Norwich by then Norwich is about 3 minutes drive from Thorpe. I was thinking about the hospital so I wanted to take a look around there as I have never see it up close.. I started walking down the long road leading to the hospital and my dog started to growl which she had never done before She wasn't even one at the time so I was shocked I petted her and tried to walk on but she wouldn't budge. I was about to turn away and walk the other way but I thought I sore movement outside the front door that's the part in the middle of the hospital but its quite a way away from where I was standing but you can just make it out. There where about 6 people there I could just make out they where wearing what looked like white or something light in colour They where just standing there looking straight ahead not moving I walked closer to get a better look they didn't move. as I turned to walk away with my dog I looked back and they where gone. I put it down to my imagination. Years later near the hospital they had built a park and ride and a business estate right near the hospital . On the business estate is Norwich union the insurance firm. I went there as I got a job interview there. waiting to be seen there was another woman there I asked her was she as nervous as she looked then she told me what had happened to her. She said she had just past a roundabout I said okay which one as there are 2 near the estate she told me which one so I said oh the one near the hospital she didn't no it was a hospital but said that makes sense then started telling me more. she said there was a women in a night dress just standing there staring right on top of the roundabout and when she drove past it she looked in the rear view mirror and she was gone. If you see the roundabout there was nowhere she could have gone in such a short time . She laughed and said I thought I had seen a ghost I told her it was a psychiatric hospital. I didn't tell her it shut down years ago. I don't believe in ghosts as to me I haven't seen one or were the people I had seen ghosts?!!!! did the lady I was talking to see a ghost!!! or was it a woman who used to live there and had a brake down years later and come back. Why did my dog growl for no reason who where the people I had seen I'm sure there is a explanation for it but its very strange .I thought this might interest you and people that might read this .

That certainly sounds like a very strange encounter you had.. We've been to the site several times and never seen anything but I guess its very possible it could be haunted as people had died there.. I know Brundall quite well as my parents live in Reedham and my Auntie used to live in Thorpe.. The old hospital is certainly an interesting place but unfortunately its likely nothing will ever get done to preserve it due to its location.. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up having one of those unexplained fires that seem to happen so much around the area and the place gets knocked down and built on by developers.. Thanks for taking the time to comment 🙂

I believe this place also had quite substantial underground sections to it, likely for utilities.. I'm sure I saw some old photos on the Internet a while back which shows some of it.. unfortunately anything like that would have been filled in with the rubble of the building when it was demolished and there's no evidence of them now.. 😒

You can just THANK GOD that mental health provision is so much better today. I'm genuinely very sorry about what happened to your Aunt though. People should have been made accountable, they should have had to face up to what they did, and pay some sort of penalty. A lot of people were very ignorant then, and they got away with things they should NEVER have been allowed to.

hey great video, i checked out the hospital/asylum today and it was obviously all boarded up, probably due to the recent murder that happened there. i was wondering where the morgue is? is it near the asylum? how did you enter the asylum with it all boarded up
@ExploringWithEmAndStu
@ExploringWithEmAndStu 3 жыл бұрын
Yes the morgue is just to the north of the Asylum I'm surprised u didn't see it.. We explored it well over 2 years ago now and at that time there was a small entry point which I believe is now re-sealed up.. keep trying though as it becomes regularly open again. We did infact return to do another video here just a couple of months ago where u can see it boarded up.

@Exploring with Em & Stu they had to keep front of building as listed, like the old norfolk and norwich ipswich Rd. Whitlingham also. I was upstairs on the wards , night duty was spooky, the ceilings were high and the echo of the doors at night . I found whitlingham more creepy . Being agency I was lucky enough to work at them all .
@ExploringWithEmAndStu
@ExploringWithEmAndStu Жыл бұрын
@@shazosborne7789 Yes we heard they only kept this bit because it was listed although I can't really understand why more of the buildings weren't as they were just as old and the long curved corridors it once had I believe were actually quite unique so should have been preserved.. With the building now how it is and in its location I can't see them ever finding a use for it so I fear they'll eventually find a way to demolish the rest to make way for development. Must have been fascinating to have seen so many places like this when they were still operational, although like you say sometimes a little creepy.. 😳

@Exploring with Em & Stu I loved it there, being an agency nurse I was blessed to work in hospitals all over Norfolk. Sadly Plumstead burnt down . I don't know if you can get near whitlingham hospital which was the old colman place in trowse. Now upstairs there at night was very creepy , thin corridors . I hope these buildings will stay protected they hold so many memories for me .
