Amazon is the king of fast delivery - it pioneered the free two-day shipping model customers have come to expect. As competitors like Walmart and Target ramp up delivery speeds to take a piece of the e-commerce pie, Amazon is overhauling its distribution network and investing heavily in its drone delivery program, more automation and electrifying its delivery fleet.
WSJ visits a same-day facility to explore Amazon’s fast-shipping strategy.

It absolutely amazes me that it took Walmart and Target so long to realize that their stores are just massive warehouses in locations that Amazon wishes they could have.

Looking forward to the Target episode but likely the missing piece of the puzzle until now is probably what this video talked about at the beginning: stocking the right things at the right locations for faster delivery. Retail locations probably have minimum orders of things they need to stock their shelves you can't dedicate a whole Target just to cleaning supplies and Apple products like Amazon does with that one FC in Renton however if Target now has the data to inform which stock to hold more of for delivery purposes in addition to their retail stock it'll be a different game.

Walmart’s logistics from data to distribution knows what a store needs before the people that even shop there do. They simply got complacent and didn’t think it was an actual threat. Now they’re trying to play catch up.

Why is that surprising? There was no way for people to shop online until the internet came along. Even the man, it still took decades and a global pandemic for a sizable number people to do most of their shopping online. I’m an avid Amazon shopper, but I hate buying groceries online. I’ll resist it as long as I can. For me and many others, having a physical location to shop at is necessary.

As an Amazon Flex driver, i've had occasions where the time stamp on a package (we get delivery by time on all packages) was ridiculous, where GPS said it would take me 20 minutes to get to the stop but the time stamp said I had to be there in 10 minutes or the package would be considered late. I would then get an email from amazon saying that, in effect, i need to do a better job at delivering packages on time. That creates a dangerous situation for drivers.

If you live in an apartment please don’t select the 4-8am delivery time. If we can’t access the lockers, we have to return to the warehouse. ALSO PLS PROVIDE A GATE CODE ❤
@marccracchiolo4935
@marccracchiolo4935 7 ай бұрын
You make a good point Amazon needs to set up a department whose job it is to contact complex owners of any type of gated community after a single delivery has been made to set up automatic protcalls to ensure vetted drivers and employees have access with no problem. If lazy property owners refuse to do this it should be Amazons prerogative to refuse delivery. Think of the time and money both parties would save.

We don’t even get gate codes as residents 😂 just a key card
@BlindMango
@BlindMango 3 ай бұрын
There isn't a gate code at some apartment buildings, and people who live there just use their key cards to enter. The screen with a "code entry" at the front of the building you may see is just a way to dial someone who lives there so they can beep you in, but no way to enter a code to open the door. It seems like the regular FedEx, UPS, and USPS drivers may have access to the building, but since the Amazon drivers are just seemingly random without an everyday route, I guess the apartment giving them access cards is way more difficult
@flanagamer

We gotta use a third-party delivery service called Fetch - basically the middle man between Amazon & the customer. It sucks, but I get why many apartment complexes are requiring it nowadays.

I honestly wish they'd have some better "slow" options. I don't need tube socks same day. No rush shipping is fine, but often shows up late because you become low priority. I don't mind waiting, but I do want it the day they say. Three day delivery would be fine for most of my stuff.
@Eptiger
@Eptiger 7 ай бұрын
I'm in a major metro area but I've found "Amazon Day" delivery to work probably 90% of the time (and usually there's some tangible incentive for choosing this option or a no-rush option). The 10% of the time when it doesn't work is as you said: late delivery.
@KityKatKiller

I agree. When I order a present on monday for a party on friday, then friday is absolutley fine as a delivery date. That's 4 days. But the options I have are "next day" and "between thursday and monday" What am I supposed to pick there? The more expensive solution, I don't really need or the cheaper one where I'm gambling when it arrives? Fast delivery is second in importance. Accuracy of the date is far more important to me.

As a former Amazon driver, worked for a DSP, I kept getting more and more packages to the point where it would be physically impossible to deliver them if I took my “obligated” 30 minute break (it’s obligated but you’re also told to take it while driving or while delivering) like imagine being given 200 packages and without including the time it takes to: drive to address, find adequate parking, turn off the car, take off seatbelt, jump in back, search for package in a sea of 20 other packages in a big delivery bag, and then walk across yards (yes on grass, we all hate ppl that have signs to not step on grass, since it’s always the most direct route to your door) and walk back and get the car going again Let’s say ALL of that took 3 minutes, that’s 10 hours of the same thing without including a bathroom break or time to decompress or relax your joints (try jumping off a 2 step height 200 times, it’s killer on knees and ankles) or even eat in peace. People don’t realize that they don’t need more breaks, they need more workers, better pay to attract new workers and keep the ones they have, and strict limitations on how many deliveries they can do per day cause there’s no point of having an “obligated” hour long break (1 30 minute and 2 15 minutes) if the worker feels obligated to keep working through it in order to not fall behind and get written up 🤷🏻‍♂️

I used to work for Amazon and they constantly overworked employees. The promise of fast shipping came at the expense of our health as we had to sort several packages continuously throughout our standard 10 hour shift. A work union didn’t exist either at our facility and this made our working conditions harsh and dangerous. I’m in my 20s and for sure those medical benefits exist for a reason. On the daily older employees would wear braces, not for preventative measures but for recovery. It’s unfortunate that Amazon puts so much pressure on its employees as a direct result of attempting to increase its output for $$$.

I've never used same-day when I see it offered, because it costs more and I don't need the item immediately. Next day or two-day isn't guaranteed. I would say I get 80% on time. The other 20% come from one day to up to a week late. One package I'm expecting today still says it's arriving by 10:00 pm today. I know it's not because the tracking says it arrived at an Amazon facility in Wilmington Ohio this morning, and I'm in California. 10:00 pm isn't happening. Maybe tomorrow. Last week I got notified a package was delivered but I didn't see it at my door. When I checked the website, the picture showing where the package was delivered wasn't my doorstep. I went searching around the neighborhood and found it at another house. That happens, but not often. As far as Amazon job satisfaction, I feel for all those warehouse workers standing all day doing repetitive work. Employee turnover must be huge. This video just interviews higher level supervisors and executives in their executive office clothing. It's the workers down in the trenches that I want to hear.

If the same monopolies sit in the market for too long, they simply won't seek ways to improve themselves or help their customers. And, at that time, they control how we live our lives regardless of the poor or boring conditions we are living in. These companies are insidiously playing "hey, this time, you push, I pull" tug-a-war games years after years. 3:50 no, it's to divert liabilities from Amazon to the worker, who often is considered self employed.

I don't mind paying the membership. Where I live is a senior facility, which has an intercom; intercom code is posted in the instructions. Only to rec'd a notification that I need to provide a gate code.......for the delivery. Maybe if the driver took the time to read the instructions he/she would gain entry into the building. Driver also leaves packages on the counter in the mailroom, which gives easy access to thieves to steal. Also, I check the box for all my packages to be delivered so there're few boxes and a one time delivery day. Only to rec'd package being delivered on each day of the week instead of all at once.

What we should worry about is the health of workers in this new program, the dysfunctional system that leads drivers to skip lunch and even bathroom breaks is sadly already in place and documented in the classical one. Amazon have a philosophy that the driver or the worker only is liable for the delay, so don’t expect me to believe that’s not where they’re going to put the most stress on in these same day deliveries.

How does Amazon get anyone to work for them if it’s so terrible? You realize companies have to compete to get labor right?
@AndresLopez-el1sf
@AndresLopez-el1sf 4 ай бұрын
@@codycastand why do you think that they have a big turnover of employees? Drivers don't stay too long in these companies for some reason. New drivers take some time to adapt to this dynamic and learn their routes, this translate in packages delivered to wrong addresses, mishandled or not delivered at all, which result in unhappy customers. People work for Amazon because is a job where you can start working in a couple weeks and don't need previous experience to do it (even driving, for that reason there are a bunch of accidents), but is not something that you want to do for a long time.

I might be the odd one out, but I don't like it. I ordered 2 books yesterday, both were delivered today, but in 2 different shipments, that means 2x packaging, 2x handling and 2x transportation which all has an impact on cost and the environment. And yes, I am certain both came from the same location.
@hewhohasnoidentity4377
@hewhohasnoidentity4377 7 ай бұрын
But it wasn't 2x anything. It was actually 1/250 x transportation. You are considering 2 separate vehicles being driven by 2 different people and making 2 different trips to your home. Reality is that both of those items were 1 of 500 items in the route that would have been made without your order. When the USPS mailman brings you a piece of mail they are not making a special trip for each individual envelope. Neither is Amazon.
@john40539
@john40539 7 ай бұрын
It's really not close to 2x though. The weight of the books was the same, and the paper/plastic that covered them was no different than a Starbucks cup you threw away. Meanwhile, combining multiple items into one order takes longer and more labor than two separate packages.

@john40539
@john40539 7 ай бұрын
The speed you receive a delivery at has no impact on the Amazon staff. It's didn't come earlier because people worked/drove faster- it's just that the item was already in your city. Workers in a fulfillment center on the other side of the state for a next day delivery will have just as much time pressure, because the item needs to get on the truck to your city first.

As a amazon worker of this exact type of building I agree wholeheartedly with you I don't really understand why most people can't go to the store themselves most of the time by the time your package may or may not arrive you could've been back from the store with the single cough medicine you solely bought from amazon even if it was groceries I kid you not we have a amazon fresh warehouse 10-15 min away from the Amazon SDD (same day delivery) warehouse that practically does the exact same thing that the same day warehouse does it's just limited to only groceries. That claims to get delivered within 2hrs once again.

As an Ex Amazon Employee, I can easily say that the faster they want to go, the more fatigue every employee will feel. I really think the Government should step in and make some rules about this Same-day Delivery thing like if it's not essential, there is no need for same-day delivery. that's why more accidents happen on the road because Drivers are forced to drive fast and deliver quickly

It's a competition between companies to get more sales, if both have similar options, but one got faster delivery, that one will win the customer. In the end of the day, companies don't sell product, they sell experiences, and that's the key of the competition. But, yes, someone need to stop these self destructive strategy, they have to remember their workers are humans, for now.
