Corruption exists everywhere, but in America, how corrupt have the federal government and the agencies that run our country become? Today, we meet with First Amendment attorney Benjamin Barr to stroll around Washington, D.C., to better understand government corruption, learn how our tax dollars are used, and discover more about how America operates behind the scenes.

Correction from Shanna:
I erroneously omitted that I was employed by the NIAID branch of the NIH, whose specialized focus was allergens and infectious disease research. NIH is made up of over two dozen institutes and Dr. Fauci was director of the specific institute that I worked for, not overarching umbrella of NIH. That said, it was not an internship as a few concluded, but a GS ranked job as a grants management specialist with accruals/benefits that would have extended if I had chosen to remain. When speaking later I mention a separate internship the context of which didn't make the cut due to video editing needs.

The Department of Homeland Security regularly purchases social media data from third-party vendors to spy on Americans. This is known as the “data broker loophole” because purchasing data instead of seizing it does not implicate the Fourth Amendment protection against such activity. We are taught from out very childhood to make a name in the world, to become famous, well-known, successful, a prime minister or a president, a Nobel prize winner - but somebody special, somebody. Every child is poisoned with the idea of being somebody, and the reality is we are all nobodies. And the reality is tremendously beautiful! Just being nobody brings such joy and ecstasy that one cannot even imagine it. Fame brings nothing. It is a very stupid game, very childish and immature. My definition of real achievement is that which cannot be taken away by death. Anything that can be taken away by death is not a real achievement but only a pseudo achievement, toys to play with. Become a nobody from this moment and enjoy the freedom that it brings. Become anonymous and see the joy! There is no worry, no anxiety. Because there is no ego you don't feel hurt. Nothing can hurt you. Somebody can insult you and you can stand there watching and enjoying it because there is nobody inside you to feel hurt, there is nobody to be wounded. You can enjoy and laugh. The day a man can enjoy and laugh while he is being insulted he has already attained something, he has become part of eternity. He has entered into the world of the immortals. Osho

The sooner you can eliminate credit card debt in general, the better off you’ll be. Use Debit cards instead. It is the EXACT same protections as credit cards now, so there is no reason not to. Also when relying on debit cards, you will be much more disciplined on spending as credit cards make it easy to go on spending sprees in comparison.

@@someoneelse6934 this is incorrect, debit cards do NOT have the same protections. If you need to dispute charges on a debit card due to stolen account information, you DONT have the money while the dispute is going on. On a credit card, you dont pay interest during the dispute, and you still have all the money in your bank account. When traveling, you NEED a credit card for protection. It is not being more disciplined if you are using a debit card to stop over spending. That's a lack of discipline.

I am employed as a county elections official in Oregon and I was nodding along at nearly every point made during the video. I personally attest that you can change the name on your elected official's office door and it does not mean a thing. I have seen immoral, unethical, and illegal acts from the county all the way up to the Secretary of State. These acts and patterns of behavior are committed by people who span the entire political spectrum; who are incompetent, corrupt, or have a 'mother knows best' attitude - or some combination thereof. Internally, they are very derisive of voters. You, the voter, are the obstacle. You, the voter, get in the way of the process. Long gone are the days when the process existed as the means to serving the voter. It is perverse that the voter - the private citizen - is the means to the process. *Until we destroy the unaccountable, bureaucratic state, we will never recover as a people and a nation. Recovery may only occur where there is accountability.* May I never live to see myself become one of the bureaucrats...

As an Air Force veteran, I experienced the “Use it or lose it” method of budgeting. On one hand, we could not order parts to maintain equipment but, on the other hand, there was always excess money available for facility improvements. At one point, I was told to order new wallpaper for our office 5 years in a row (otherwise we’d lose the money next year). I asked why we couldn’t take the money earmarked for facility improvements and use it for ordering equipment parts. I was told, nope, can’t do it because it’s from different budgeting “baskets”.

It's the same in private corporations. I just blew $10000 on travel reservations because we needed to spend the money in Q2 or lose it forever. If I had told them that the travel is not really needed but I would appreciate a $5000 bonus instead of spending the $10000 it would have been impossible.

It's the same with our city govt. They are about to rip up many yards and block local roads, and make a lot of noise for a long time, to build new, ugly modern bridges that will replace the beautiful, old bridges with character that we love. I worked for one branch of the federal government and I affirm the table conversation to also be bullseye accurate. I was a hard worker, took my job seriously really wanting to make a good impression when I first got the job. Same thing happened to me, I handed my work in to my supervisor at the end of the week and proceeded to tell me he needs to talk to me with this look on his face like he was unhappy with my work. He then told me I had to stop doing all this work, slow down, you're making the reat of us look bad. So what I completed in that week, got spread over a month. One week's work for a month's pay. Crazy. There was a big ick factor to that. Also, the per diem story, bullseye accurate, as well. I was told the same. So much waste of the hardworking taxpayer's money. But, it will never change. I guarantee that. You don't know until you know.

Having worked for the Federal government for decades, I believe one of the biggest problems is the inability to hire honest, hard working AND and experienced public servants/employees with the people of the world in their best interest, not themselves. America continues down a path of Me Me Me, including some people wanting higher offices. As a Federal Employee I always had the mission of the agency and the public as my number one priority. I certainly did not become rich as a Fed Employee nor was that ever my goal. Until people realize that life is not only about them but rather others and the planet we will continue to have problems.

Somewhat tangential but one of the nasty side effects of the individual above all else thing is it whittles everyone down to a single retail unit. A group of 'individuals' is the easiest to exploit in all kinds of ways. Much tougher to take on a unified populace that can set aside some differences they may have--teaming up works. The greatest power we have is our numbers.

He seems cool until you look beyond the surface of what you see in this video and examine what he actually does for a living (as opposed to what he says he does). For example, Ben played an instrumental role in opening the floodgates of corruption in American elections through his role in Citizens United. You can think him for the fact that mega corporations can spend unlimited sums to influence elections in the US without even having to disclose their participation. So ironic for him to be making these videos about corruption. That's not to say he doesn't make some good points in this video... But in my eyes, a mega-hypocrit

Employee numbers going up, budgets going up, everyone works in silos and doesn't speak to other agencies, you're penalized for going above and beyond and/or pointing out issues and discrepancies with the system, etc. A lot of people don't want to make any noise about it because obviously we have our salaries, pensions, and livelihoods on the line. It's a tough line to walk across and it's not surprising this bleeds into federal government as well.

@@shirleykurtz Look into all your candidates. Not just for big elections like presidential, general, and midterms. Also look at local politicians, like mayor, governor, state legislators, etc. Find real, factual, verifiable sources. Pretty much all mainstream media, on both sides (yes Fox and Cnn) are owned by a corporation or a billionaire, and are managed by rich executives with their own goals and interests. They will warp stories to manipulate us to vote the way they want us to. GroundNews is a great website that shows both sides of a particular topic. It gives sources for both sides, rates their factuality, and highlights "blind spots" that neither side is covering. Usually the blind spots have to deal with topics that these corporations and billionaires don't want us to know about, so neither side of the media talks about it.

Many people seem to think the government creates money. If that were true, the Pilgrims would have unloaded a dollar printing machine on Day 1 and wouldn't have had to do anything but search for ink. The money represents work and accomplishment. We once had the gold standard so that U.S. dollars could not be created out of thin air, had to be tied to a real store of value. Without that, we have inflation.

Peter, I couldn't agree more with what you guys said abt critical thinking. - I home schooled all of my kids, and 3 things we focused on heavily were critical thinking skills, The Scientific Method & and the Socratic Method. You'd be very hard-pressed to find those 3 things taught in any public school in America.

Same here. We focused on applying basic principles to all subjects. Age-appropriate Critical Thinking was integrated into every class, every day, even art and music. Their favorite elective was Logical Fallacies and we made a family game of noticing them in advertising, speeches, etc. Nerdy fun that has been a huge help to them at university, in business, and as responsible citizens.

That guy gave you the tour I offered to give you. 😂 I've lived here for more than 30 years. My husband has worked in and out and around our federal government with growing frustration. Our kids didn't see him much because of his dedication. I worked in the private sector in DC until I decided to stay home with our kids. Seeing my husband's growing frustration with a job he's dedicated to and has special expertise in is aggrivating. They've been trying to replace him for at least 5 years. I wish they could. Universities just aren't producing people with the knowledge, and the agencies have adopted a system that rotates people every 3 years. There is no memory of what is or what was tried.

Shanna's job sounds like mine with a medium-sized city in California. At least as far as workload and spending go, anyway. When I first started (I came from private industry) I was told to "slow down, you're making us look bad". This was from my new co-workers. And, yes, we have to spend all our budgeted money (or more) in order to not lose money in our budget for the next fiscal year. It is a union job, not the best pay, but the benefits and the retirement make up for most of the difference. It's tough to be a hard worker in that type of environment, for sure! Watching others slack off while I work hard isn't a lot of fun. But I see the light at the end of the tunnel....hope it's not an oncoming train! LOL! Take care, Peter! Love your content, man. Stay cool bro.

Union workers dragging their feet on a project are not the problem. Large alphabet agencies that have no practical impact, yet increasing budgets are an example of the real problem

GREAT insight without blaming/accusing according to political affiliation. (yes, I noticed the edit.) BOTH "sides" are complicit in the systemic bloat and rot of our government. We need more of these neutral conversations now, especially leading up to the election. American citizens are FAR less divided on key issues than portrayed in most media. We need to unite against political and judicial corruption on all sides and at all levels. Thanks, Peter, Benjamin and Shawna (sp?)!!
