As an architectural coastal home, Gordons Bay Residence by Popov Bass experiments with light, material and proportion to craft a sophisticated family home. The modernist-inspired dream house opens with a direct view through the interior and out towards the bay. This was achieved by lowering the living room to allow the main entrance to have a framed view of the blue waters beyond.
The house tour showcases the grand entryway, which was designed to link the building’s two levels together through a double height ceiling. Likewise, the bright blue tiles on the walls of the exterior entrance indicate a degree of contemporary playfulness that informs the home’s philosophy and feeds into its architecture, interior design and furniture. The furniture featured throughout the interior spaces align with this modernist aesthetic.
The living area, imbued with moments of intimacy with deliberate furniture placements, boasts unmatched views out to the bay through large glass windows. However, light is also significantly introduced into the living room through skylights. This was deliberately incorporated into the architecture and ensures that light within the space is diffused evenly throughout the day, especially as Gordons Bay Residence is an architectural coastal home. This allows the interior spaces to balance light with functionality, inspired by the structure’s theme of contemporary simplicity.
As an architectural coastal home, the design speaks to the surrounding natural environment. The house tour features a modernist, raw palette, as the main theme linking both the architecture and interior design is the home’s textured materials. The design of the dream home focuses on liveability and, as an architectural coastal home, Gordons Bay Residence needed resiliency against the harsh Australian landscape; all materials are immediately exposed to the elements due to its location. Concrete is used to combat the climatic conditions and corrosive bayside environment. As an architectural coastal home, the design also needed to utilise materials with textures and finishes that could change with the environment and endure. The concrete is paired with honey-coloured timbers and restrained detailing throughout the interior design.

Awesome house, very impressive. It's even more impressive that an Aussie Architect managed to talk about his latest creation without using the word 'materiality' 10 times!!

I like this house as a whole, although having two complete and large kitchens with two equally large living rooms just feels a little wasteful to me, in a sense that I bet that one of them is barely getting any use. I'd *personally* hate having huge spaces in my house that aren't utilized to their full potential. Beautiful architecture though!

Is it really THAT much more wastefull than a main kitchen and butlers pantry in a home without a chef though?

It is weird indeed. There’s a lot more they could have done to utilize that space more effectively- but then again who knows- maybe it suits the owners best when it’s this particular way.

Would like to see OSB used for forming the concrete as it may give an interesting texture.

I mean you can't beat the location and the aspect. Having lived a few blocks away if I could afford a place on that street in Coogee this would be it. But for my taste it is too concrete and the stairwell and open plan areas feel more like a reworked university building with home elements. Needs more textures and materials that are variations of concrete (no matter how great those variations are).

Love The Local Project. But do have to ask, was this one filmed differently? They usually look so dreamy and cinematic. This one is a little me TV like. Still love the content.

The facade (thumbnail) drew me in, but then this house really falls flat for me. Big lover of concrete and restrain in palette, but there seems to be a lack of balance between materials, colours & volumes here. Architectually nice elements that have not been combined as well as they could have. Outside, not a fan of the blue tile use and the different shade of blue pond/pool mosaics either, but to each their own. It's still a special house but nothing pops, I'm missing originality, interior design & design fun.

Repent, trust, and believe in Jesus and be saved. To repent means you confess your sins (the acts and thoughts that are wrong according to God and His Word) and ask for forgiveness with sincerity. Once you do this, strive to no longer do those wrong/sinful things, but do what is right according to God’s Word. It’s not by doing good things that you are saved but by trusting and believing in God and His grace/mercy. John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Funny how the concrete works well for “climatic conditions” but creates the most CO2…that creates more harsh climatic conditions. O’, joy.
