Located in Seattle, Washington, Leschi Inventors House by Olson Kundig is an inventors dream house with room for the owner to live and experiment. Following a brief that asked for a representation of the client’s characteristics, the architect has focused on supplying a home that allows the owner to create, workshop and experiment on different levels. Additionally, the architect responds to the home’s location, climate and consistent rain by employing materials that become one with the land as well as work with the wet weather Seattle is known for.
At the start of the inventor's dream house tour, a big yellow front door has been created to greet visitors. Specifically chosen to be the exact same colour as Caterpillar’s heavy machinery, the door opens to reveal the unique interior of steel and concrete. On the front door, the owner’s experimental characteristics can be appreciated with a lock usually seen and used within a bank vault. As one continues through the inventors dream home and passes by the staircase made of industrial level steel, the welcoming of a double-height living space showcases the union between domains for experimentation and living. As such, the use of black granite counters with an inbuilt Bunsen burner on the island table allows for the owner to do their own research within the comfort of their home with views over Lake Washington.
To connect to the surrounds, giant glass panel doors have been installed across one wall of the living space - once opened, the living room becomes a deck space in which the owner can enjoy all year round. The main living quarters cantilever off a thick steel pipe, which also services the living room’s fireplace. Upstairs, a loft has been stationed to be a think space for the inventor, while located on the ground floor is the mechanical room. Seen as the most important room within the inventors dream house, the undercroft of the home showcases an expression of all the mechanics and systems to the home, while also becoming celebration of everyone involved in the process.
In the materiality palette of the inventors dream house, the architect uses weathered steel on the exterior as well as the interior - the cladded elements within the home have been waxed to allow for the steel to remain in its natural finish as it came out of the factory. Additionally, concrete covers the floor to further allow for the owner to experiment with ease. Matched with the light and dark walls is the cabinetry, which is created from a dense particle board that has been stained and finished with a flat clear lacquer over the top. Designed to be a union between an assembly of pieces, the inventors dream house is finished and made to evolve in the wet weather so to become one with its surrounds.

Absolutely love this style of presentation. Clearly explained design process, material and purpose without sounding academic. The presenter established great comfort with the audience, no pride, no pretentiousness, just a conduit for information and allowed the design to speak for itself. A stark contrast to a lot of videos that reads like a thesis, by the end no one knows what the layout actually looks like. Very nice!

@@tranzco1173 considering you’ve made 11 pessimistic or creepy (“wine moms are AWESOME”) comments on this channel, it’s obvious this style caters to… different people. To the thinkers and makers. The curious people who question “what if”, “how to”, and “has it”. It’s just odd you have repeatedly subjected yourself to things you don’t like 🤷🏻. But hey, do you.

5:12 FINALLY ! a contemporary house with comfortable chairs. In my home, I want to enjoy sitting at the table with family and friends, and these wood chairs with padded seats look super comfy. So many times, people throw in chairs or backless sofas that look cool, but are very uncomfortable. Function and form are two critical elements together.

Beautiful project. If only all projects included such an open minded client and equally open wallet. And I love how the architect leaves room for the Craftsman's creativity. That unselfishness, if practiced more in the world by that field, would only produce better results. Subscribed.

When he stated that leave enough room for other creative's hands to touch the project and put some of their own minor twists on it that really resonated with me. The goal of an architect shouldn't be to express just their direct vision but rather to express the best vision possible for that project/client. I wish more firms practiced this way, It would make for much more interesting houses like this one.

There is so much to love about the intentions of the homeowner/architects and contractors that executed the project. The only thing I take issue with is that the elevated the foundation of the home several feet higher than the neighboring home and set up a deck on that side so the neighbor has no visual privacy into their home or their yard, and the fact that the new home is so much taller/broader than the home it replaced, also likely changed the amount of direct light that neighboring property has now. I know everyone can purchase a home with multiple acres but I wish more consideration was given to scale/light, etc. of surrounding homes - and offset the damage with landscaping that provides a buffer or something, at least.. I have a friend that owned a single-story home - on a block of single-story homes - the lot next door was sold, and the home was torn down and replaced with a 2.5 story single family home. Not only did she lose all privacy in her yard, the lack of sunlight in her yard post-construction actually killed her plants and required a new landscaping plan for a yard she no longer enjoyed using. The worse part - the new homeowners got in over their heads financially on the build and never lived in it.
