now openai's sora has come along and has made everyone believe that they can become the next great hollywood director lol. this is real art. this was made by hard working humans working their butts off day in and day out. this is what i want to see. congrats again to ILM.

Yet, if Sora would have made this, most people wouldn't even care.

At first, I was flabbergasted by Sora and its impact killing the need for video artists and VFX artists overnight but when you watch the result of the prompts, it still shows how the artists still have a place because SORA can't produce a movie with specific shots being edited together from different angles in specific lighting settings, basically the difference between a birthday party shot by your mom unedited and a party scene from The Godfather being carefully edited by an artist revieweing every single shots to build a specific sequences. The videos that are currently generated by SORA are so devoid of any artistry showcased in this BTS whatsoever, you still need artists with a sense of vision, style and framing a narrative through image movements and editing so the beholder can feel something genuine emotions out of it that isn't just "WOW, That fake thing looks so real" for 30 seconds then just forgets about it. Can Sora actually produce a whole narrative movie with a script, digital actors and edit it all altogether like it came from the vision of a singular director and cinematographer? That's the difference with producing a single AI frame like Midjourney for concept art stills but engineer a whole movie in prompts without a single artist supervising the result and edit it in a coherent human form? I don't think so...yet.

Those full robot replacements (like the police bots) was done without markers?! Wild! I never ever would have guessed 😳

This was a B- movie plot paired with absolutely A+ cinematography, visual effects, design, and talent. While it's not my favourite, I'm glad it exists, I'm impressed by the creativity and effort that went into it, and I am keen to see what these people do next.

They added all those effects in post without any tracking markers, and they all looked seamless. CGI has made lightyears of progress in a very short time. When you have a clear understanding of your technology and how to use it - the sky is the limit.

They did have tracking markers. They had black dots on the side of the faces of the actors. What they said was they had minimal tracking. Ultimately this is genius work from ILM and the team.

Naturally occurring trackers in the texture of the ground, the wood of buildings etc are totally fine for use as tracking markers these days. Anything that doesn't move around in the wind. Even easily accessible software such as adobe after effects has been able to this kind of tracking for 15+ years. For tracking of the heads, a tool such as KeenTools GeoTracker would get you pretty close without markers.

@@ODHunte On some main characters, yes, but quite a lot of the "extras" were comped on without tracking markers iirc. It's very exciting for the future of VFX if this is what's possible now.

Where it really shines though is the combination of shooting on/at amazing locations and the CGI being integrated into that footage so incredibly well. Most creative people assume VFX artists just push a bunch of buttons and use special software to make the output image. However, like everything there is an art to VFX. And your way one of the most creative and originalapproach VFX. Thanks for sharing your video!

*This is quite possibly my favourite scifi movie of all time. Certainly I’ve learnt the most from this film out of anything I’ve watched. Bought the book, bought the movie too! Of course the BTS inspired the Heavy duty Gimbal L bracket but also Gareth and team inspired thousands of filmmakers in many ways. And of course the visual effects are simply breathtaking. Thank you team for such innovative and all encompassing work!*

Astounding work. I became obsessed with this movie (watched 3 times on IMAX). What Garret and his team and everyone at ILM have accomplished is truly remarkable. I think it’s going to set the tone for creating a level of authenticity in service of great storytelling, something the Sci-fi genre was in desperate need of.

Im not good at vfx but im good at making the story and filming. If there’s anyone who’s willing to tell their own story let’s create something together !

So I understand that VFX in this movie werea cheaper because they filmed in locations and whitout tracking marks or mocap suits... how is this not the new standard of filming? I mean...cheaper, faster and seamless. The tech to track and replace is obviously not an issue

My only problem with this film from a look standpoint was that it had too much grain. The movie wasn't sharp or crisp enough and that's because they filmed on the Sony fx9. The grain and lack of detail is more noticeable on the 4k disc.

I can tell you they added it in post. It wasn't from shooting on the FX9, they actually used the FX3 with a couple old Kowa anamorphic lenses. I've shot on 2 FX3's since they came out and I've never had noise issues unless I strayed way off the base ISO's when they were new to me.

This video contains very little information that we haven’t heard 1000 times before about this movie… I was hoping we’re going to go into depth of how the effects really happened. You showed before and after, but there was almost no information about how we got from .A to point B. Mediocre video at the most. Give us details details details. Otherwise what’s the point?
