I got a brief opportunity to climb inside a (formerly) secretive U.S. Navy SEAL Delivery Vehicle or "SDV" miniature submarine from SDV Team 2 (SDVT-2) at Little Creek, Virginia. Here's a look at the cockpit of the mini-submersible that SEALs use to travel from a submerged submarine to the beach underwater.

I can’t imagine the constant mental training required just to ride in this thing, let alone hooking yourself up to and detaching from the SCUBA tubes in total darkness, memorizing who’s going to sit where, emerging onto the shoreline in 4-way defensive formation, etc. Wow. These warfighters are extremely detail-oriented, to say the least. Hats off to them all. Much respect.

They have to have the required mental makeup to even become a seal. Those guys are not normal mentally. I bet if they ever did a publicly available research study into them every single one would be considered either sociopaths or completely & utterly immune to fear & other “normal” psychological traits. I know 2 guys that tried out but didn’t make it & both are more than capable of doing anything physically required. One quit when he had hypothermia & wouldn’t jump into the ocean to do a mile swim at night. He thinks he either would’ve died or been rescued and hospitalized & would’ve had to wait months to start it all over again. After they weed out the guys that aren’t physically capable they constantly make you do things you think will kill you & it gets worse the further you get into training. The one that freaked him out the most was they had them lay down in field of grass in front of heavy trucks that were then going to roll over them & that they’d only “survive” if they all worked together & took the weight of the truck together. They’re crazy dudes.

Thank you! The MK8 Mod 0 was my boat back in the 90s. Back in the day, we would never have let you film in the compartment looking forward at the gadgets. That was 30 years go.

I’m not happy either about photos of the F-14A, B and D Tomcat cockpit photos taken while the aircraft was still in service.

Been there, done that... Drysuit dive training at Bangor Subase, it was always the BEST time! 3 hour transits to, and then from the target at 8' depth in 28 deg, toasty warm. (SDVT-1, 1992-95)

Most interesting, thanks for the upload. Those my own country, France, operates have only been made public recently, although the third generation is now being delivered, we only heard about the whole program a handful of years ago.

Goes into detail how secret the SDV is and that it's highly classified! Then shows exactly how to operate it and interviews all the Navy Seals 😅

Mike Ritland (Mike Drop Podcast) was talking about riding in the mk5 for a little over 2 hours on their way to secure the oil pipelines, refineries, etc right before the warranty kicked off. The largest SOF mission in the history of sof. There were over 150 operators. Pretty gnarly.

They use two types, the SDV and another one. I forget the differences but I know one returns to ship on its own iirc. One is open and your in the water, I think that’s this one. Hell that might apply to both I just know there’s two different types they use. Been to long since I’ve looked up both vehicles to remember. Iirc I think both can be fitting to the Virginia class block five but I may be wrong, I know it has an unmanned drone sub they can use. Or it may be the Jimmy Carter because I know it had a SOF section added to it and is basically our spy sub!! I just remembered on a diagram of one they had one docked on top and another either on the bottom or maybe it launched thru the torpedo tube, I can’t remember exactly. They have so many toys I get them all mixed up lol

That takes some extremely calm nerves to get into. I wonder if ALL seals have the capability to get in that sub.

i forgot the name of the seal on a podcast i listened to, but he describes having a panic attack inside of one on their way to a mission and he kept repeating to himself “lookin good, feelin’ good, outta be in hollywood” along with practicing box breathing techniques

You must be assigned to an SDV Team to operate these. SEALs assigned to normal Teams will not have this oppertunity.

@@06fz1000 They are humans just like us. They get scared and uncomfortable too. Actually, considering that they risk their lives getting into most dangerous situations possible, they probably experience more fear and stress than any of us ever did in our normal lives. But they are trained to be mentally tough to get on top of those emotions and execute the mission.

I forgot to add that I like how you reference the term flying as we used to call it "flying the boat" as the joystick system is fly-by-wire like an aircraft. 😀

We used to train doing Tactical Navigation Dives with an Attack Board. At night all you can see is the glowing of the gauges on the board (watch, compass, depth gauge). Around 30 minutes into that you get a really uneasy feeling, it's your mind reacting to Sensory Deprivation. The trick is to realize what's happening, and to focus past it. My guess is the SDV teams go through something very similar. SSG. U.S. Army (Medically Retired) Infantry / Sniper / SOF Intel (SOT-A), multiple tours

Are there any videos which show what these things do, or what Seals do? From any country, whether US, EU, Asia, whatever. Or just stories to google, anything to get some idea of what the point is. I think I've heard of uses in SEA. But I have no idea what they do, or are meant to do. I assume it's not, "we're going to get on a sub, sail to Yemen, put 4 Seals into a Yemeni port, play James Bond & assassinate a few guys, then get back on the sub". Unless you're talking about North Koreans. I assume it's more like, remove this spy equipment from near our submarine cables. Inspect/maintain these underwater microphones. Train your infiltration techniques in this Japanese port. I'd like to know more about how much risk they're willing to push. I doubt it'd be something like, "try to approach this Chinese warship docked in Indonesia, and attach this listening device to it". Maybe they try to snag submersible drones? I don't think there's a need for manned ground/sea-based surveillance/intelligence of unfriendly areas, like, "go station yourselves outside of this Pakistani port and watch for this boat to leave ? Maybe part of it is getting into shallow areas, where subs either can't operate safely (due to depth/terrain, or lack of concealment). Or stories about any other type of devices which get carried by subs, besides something like an SDV. It sucks that this stuff has been going on for probably 40+ years, but there aren't many well-known stories. I wish it was more like an Air Force mission, where there's a clear map of what happened, why & how it happened. What equipment was used, what the capabilities were, etc. Respect to the guys in the know who keep their mouths shut. I wish the stories got told after 15-30 years or some reasonable period of time. I read about a tracked sub (like, which drove on the sea floor on treads). I wish that kind of stuff got published on some kind of modern version of the Discovery/History Channel, or Popular Mechanics. Now we get idiocracy ancient aliens and ads :/
