Inside Look: Building the World's Largest Articulated Hauler, the Volvo A60 in Brass, Southern Sweden
The Volvo A60 is the largest articulated hauler in the world, capable of transporting up to 55 metric tons of cargo with a total weight of nearly 100 metric tons. Built in southern Sweden, the A60 is the largest vehicle produced in this factory with most parts fitted by robots. The factory had to be converted for the hauler since it is bigger than any other vehicle produced there. The A60 is powered by a six-cylinder inline engine with a displacement of 16 liters and 673 horsepower. The dump body is custom-built in-house and can hold up to around 34 tons. The A60 is affectionately known as the "beast" on construction sites around the world.
55 TONS IN ONE GO: The XXL Hauler-Volvo A60H | WELT Documetary
The Volvo A60 is the largest articulated dump truck in the world. It can transport up to 55 tons of material effortlessly. Its total weight is almost 100 tons when fully loaded. The XXL dumper is built in Braås in southern Sweden. Here, around 550 employees manufacture six different dumper models. It is the largest vehicle manufactured at the plant, and due to their weight only a few parts can be installed without a crane.

When I was a kid, someone gave me a metal model kit of this exact Hauler (but older more squared design). It was a expensive one, since the truck itself is around 30CM in length and build mainly of cast metal parts. Still today in my late 30s it is in my desk as a set piece.

Had a number of Volvo cars, 240, 740, 940, 960, (the "four wheeled bricks"), an 850 and a 3 series. All nice cars, but when they started making much more "up to date" styled cars I think they lost the plot and a lot of their traditionally loyal customers, though I did like the 3 series which was very sporty, by Volvo standards! My last 940 is still sitting outside the house in good condition but hasn`t run for about 10 years.

@mentalizatelo
@mentalizatelo 8 ай бұрын
@@notimeforspace2477It's my understanding that there are no compromises in regards of product quality, besides who owns what. Even Ford made Volvo cars (for real), so quality is not entirely related to the owner but the manufacturers practices in the end. Before being bought by Zhejiang Geely, Volvo already produced trucks in China. Chinese have advanced A LOT in production methods both in quality and technology and in many cases they even make superior products in comparison to the western manufacturers, at a lower price (workers rights are close to inexistant). China will eventually be expensive as the rest and brands will move to new heavens to increase margin.

kinda cool how the ground has pathways painted on it so that people moving parts with the dollys know where to move the dolly so that the part doesnt hit anything would make it way quicker and easier for most people
@BinaryBlueBull
@BinaryBlueBull 7 ай бұрын
Indeed. It's the same thing in the plant where I work. The pathways are also color coded homogenously acros the plant. So for example a blue path with white border means that everyone, including visitors, can walk there (and only there. Straying from the path will get you kicked out) and you don't need to wear protective gear. A blue path without white border means that everyone, including visitors, can walk there but you need some protective gear like safety shoes, reflective vest and a helmet. A red pathway means only authorized personnel and all safety gear is mandatory, so safety shoes, fireproof pants and jacket, helmet, CO2, gas and toxin detector, earplugs, safety goggles and respirator. Orange path means danger, heavy objects overhead. Yellow pathway means electrical danger. 50/50 orange and yellow means both of those combined, etc etc. These are just some examples, there are many more, including like you describe pathways to move equipment or drive specific vehicles on. At the entrances and exits to every production hall is a large sign with all the color codes inside that specific hall and at strategic locations throughout the plant are even larger signs that contain all the color codes found in the entire plant. Kinda cool indeed, especially if you know what the colors mean

What a wonderful idea: take away a lot of parts, and add just one, to radically improve a machine! I'm guessing the articulation also radically reduces differential-type tyre wear, too. :) GO, SWEDEN!

Wholly agree with the reason for this declaration by the manufacturers. Also having a 50 metre extension cord to cover the extra 10 metres with a nice coil of the surplus acting as an inductive resistance and getting nice and hot for some reason. Voltage drop and current increase is serious stuff. When I was a kid in the 70s,visiting my grandfather on a stinker Adelaide day, he used to complain of "stale electricity" because the window rattler A/C would not do its cooling job as well. Bearing in mind that cooling of the compressor was done by the returning refrigerant gas, the lower voltage on those days meant current and heat went up and got subtracted from the cooling effort making the noticeable loss in cooling.

I hate to bust your bubble but Volvo wasn’t the first to come up with a 3 axle truck that large. Atlas Copco Wagner Mining came out with the fullback that originally was rated at hauling 45 tons then subsequently bumped up to 50 tons back in the mid 90’s. I worked their as a heavy duty diesel mechanic. 2 major issues where the center articulated hing that was a cast part had cracking issues so the engineers went to a steel plate welded replacement. Second issue because of cost and price point issues was the Transverter. They went with a ZF transverter because it was 10,000.00 dollars cheaper then using a Allison transmission. The front power frame was designed around the ZF transverter and it was impossible to convert to a Alison transmission. Wagner eventually sold the rights to the truck to undisclosed buyers but I think it was Caterpillar because I see a lot of the fullback in the Caterpillar truck.
