Inside McDonald's Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Problem

A class action lawsuit over sexual harassment at a single McDonald's restaurant in Michigan is challenging the very nature of how McDonald's does business. But it's not just McDonald's workers who want more accountability - Isobel Yeung meets with Black McDonald's franchise owners in Tennessee who are bringing a class action suit of their own over what they say is systemic racial discrimination.

Worked at Burger King as a 16 year old. With a creepy manager in his 40s. The managers office was called "the touch space" it was like a closet. Litrally a inbuilt desk with room for a chair plus a stool. You couldn't fit no more than two people at a time. All franchise managers offices are like this.. Why! Such a intimate claustrophobic, windowless space. The manager tried to put his arms around me in there once. I reacted by hitting him in his neck, he quickly opened the door. We were all disappointed at the time but to my niece’s credit she had another job within a week. She continues to work hard around her schooling. I know her older sister did quit her first job, serving elderly in a retirement setting because of a pervert in the kitchen constantly touching and patting the girls. She was not the only girl to quit. In my early 20's I was a franchise McDonald's manager for years. I'm not exaggerating...I ended up in therapy. I seriously discourage anyone from working in fast food if you can help it. I understand not everyone has a choice but it should be your last choice. I was so fucking stressed out, I couldn't see or think straight. Most management in fast food places hate their lives and have these weird superiority complexes. The entry-level employees were usually good people just trying to earn a living but my fellow managers were just crap humans that took everything out on those below them. The job itself is too damn stressful, especially for the pay. I eventually became a stay-at-home mom for a while but now I'm a part-time bar tender just to get out of the house. You'd think this job would be worse but it's a piece of cake compared to McDonald's, on top of making 3-4 times as much money. Fast food, mainly the management, is just a cesspool of human trash. I'd literally rather be homeless than work there again. These corporations don't give 2 fucks about their employees or the employees of franchise operators. As long as they're getting their slice of the money they're good with whatever is happening. I'm glad that people are suing the corporations. They need to take responsibility too. You don't get to just sit there and collect profit while the workers making you that money are being used and abused. That's disgusting.

They make 13-15 dollars an hour, plus free meals on the job, for preparing burgers and fries. You get paid good for welding girders or installing cables. The issue isn't pay, it's the cost of living, which has more to do with housing regulations, zoning, and unions which make the cost of living high for people who work in low-skill/income jobs.

Wow! But this stuff happens all the time in retail. When I worked in a clothing store in 12th grade, a supervisor slapped my butt. When I objected, he made fun of my physical appearance, as I used to be overweight. He told me that because I was “fat,” that I should be grateful to have any man showing attention to me, as I wasn’t attractive enough to have a man want me. I was crushed by that, as I was just 17 years old. I never told anyone. He resigned eventually, for unrelated reasons. About ten years later, I found out that he was involved in some sort or check/coupon schemes at some other retail establishments. He eventually plead guilty to a 35 year sentence, in order to keep from having to serve a sentence of more than 100 years. I feel like justice was served.

My ex girlfriend worked in fast food at 16..she said it wasn't until a girl recorded the sexual harassment happening to her that corporate got involved. There were many complaints against the shift manager ( the younger the more aggressive he was towards them) but nothing would come of it. Most of the time the girls would either be fired or made to do double the work bc they made a complaint. There's a reason managers hire young girls at higher rates than guys.

I am technically still employed by mcdonald’s but am looking for a job elsewhere. My experience is that even if there is no explicit harassment like touching and grabbing, the adult managers will still do things to an often underage girl that are not appropriate. The main manager of my workplace not only hires 50% skinny teenage girls but gets uncomfortably close physically and uncomfortably intimate with what he says. He sometimes portrays himself as more than just a manager to them. The vast majority also work up front, where they get oogled and sometimes hit on by male customers. Its a disgusting culture, no one intervenes and the girls themselves only smile and play along because it puts their job at risk if they do anything otherwise, but everyone knows it happens. I honestly would not be surprised if this type of stuff happens anywhere and everywhere, much more often than we’ll ever know, but it just hasn’t been said out loud yet.

I have been subjected to sexual harassment in the workplace too many times to count. I was even fired from a restaurant in my early twenties after being slapped on the ass by the owner and threatening to file sexual harassment lawsuit. By the time I turned 30ish I just accepted it as part of the job. It was not until I began working for a major coffee company that I realized it isn’t supposed to be that way. Its very important everyone understands what it means when they say independent franchise owner. I worked for a McDonalds that was independently owned for years and was even assistant general before I quit. This is 100% real and when you try to the right thing and report it to corporate they literally tell you its not there problem and you have to contact the owner. (The owner was who I was trying to report)

Thank you for bringing this forward. Many people ignore these claims because "they're just being friendly" or "team inclusive" or "that's just how he/she is". I had customers touching or gripping at me when I worked at a large liquor store, and when I'd tell my supervisors or managers, they'd just kinda laugh it off. This was after I had constantly asked for accomodations for my physical disability and mental health issues that were getting worse working as a cashier. I was also about to report someone to HR before I was let go for something my [male] supervisor encouraged and told me was permissable. He wasn't fired, but at least I wasn't charged. This led to nearly 3 months of no job, without qualifying for unemployment, and surviving off my savings with a monthly expense of $1,000 for myself and my dog... These corporations don't care about us or our voices. Best of luck to these girls.

i am currently a manager at mcdonalds! but when i started working there i was a fresh 18 year old, and i had this one really creepy manager who would ask me if i was a virgin or if i was down for a threesome while currently having a sexual relationship with another employee. I pretended i was a lesbian for months to really drive the point i was NOT interested, and reported him over and over and over to my general manager and to my supervisor, but my GM and that guy were friends, and I found out later that the manager harassing me was fired years ago for sexually harassing minors, but my GM gave him his job back anyway. I put in my 2 weeks a few months into my manager training, and my GM said she would move him to a different store if i stayed, so I did. and about my supervisor at the time, he never did anything about my harassment because he got a bonus the more managers he has. I wasn't in a position where i felt i couldn't do anything, because I didn't need the job or the money as I was living with my parents. My hearts go out to those who cannot just quit. I have a new supervisor now and the creepy manager is still employed (a department manager no less!) but I'll be sure to bring it up again next time i see him. i hope that guy goes to hell and that his wife finally leaves him

I worked at McShitties myself a couple of years ago. And I must say it was thee worst experience I’ve had .. I got promoted to crew trainer within 6months . And also asked to be a kitchen manager . I went and got my Serv Safe , passed all requirements with flying colors and was literally refused my raise and shirt . Yet was still expected to carry the weight of the kitchen staff without receiving what I had rightfully earned . I complained about it !!! I fought for myself and other crew members. I had obvious discrimination issues. I even got in contact with the district person. I asked to have a meeting. I spoke to that person during a shift in front of other crew members and I immediately became a target . Best believe I got No resolutions what so over . Jus told it would b investigations . And low and behold not even two weeks later I was losing hours. Having verbal altercations. and in turn I was fired thru a text message without any warning for absolutely no reason ! I should b suing these bums too !!!!!!! They knew I was in a hole financially literally told them my lights were bout to b cut off and I lost my hours and fired three days before Christmas. I literally lost everything . I became homeless and have been struggling with homelessness every since due to the same discrimination everywhere I’ve been since. Even moved to another state and I’ve had 4 jobs in 6months all lost for absolutely NO REASON !!! sounds a lot like systemic racism to me ..

As a young college student I was sexually harassed while working at a fast food franchise -not a Mc Donald's- by my white supervisor. I didn't know how to respond after he slapped my behind in front of my all white crew members. He said something was "on me". Then asked why was I standing around doing nothing. He pulled the ice cream machine off the wall and told me to clean the years of dust and dried cream off the wall, floor and machine. My other (white) female crew members were mortified and behind his back, tried to tell me to stick up to him, but no one said anything directly to the manager. I got on my knees and cleaned it up, finished my shift and never showed up to work there again. Most humiliating work experience of my life.

That same location had the air conditioning break during summer and it was 120 degrees in the warmest part of the building and 86 degrees in the coldest. I had heat stroke the first day and got sent home (reluctantly) and my next day back had another heat stroke but couldn't get sent home due to lack of staffers. My manager cried because he felt so bad. Never got a raise never got a promotion never got a bonus. The next location again promised raises and promotions and still it never happened, but my male counterparts got it again. Lesson learned, McDonald's is sexist.
