Back in July I was in the studio with the band Mandroid Echostar to produce drums & vocals, and then mix a new single.
In today’s video, I’m sharing some footage from the recording session…
and then taking you into my mix to show you some of the raw tracks + what I did with them in the final mix.

I listen to this song in my car at least once a week and I’m always blown away with how much more top end it has than other songs. Like, it literally sounds like 90% of the stuff I listen to have blankets over my speakers. You get insane clarity.

The course that Jordan offers is simply amazing. He takes you through everything from tracking to editing and mixing. He explains everything in a very clear and concise way - plus he, his team and the private Facebook group are always on hand to answer questions and give honest, polite and constructive feedback. If you're serious about learning how to record at a pro level, it's definitely worth considering.

Great job on your recording and production of this track! It sounds excellent and the little spices you used (the extra mic in that side room, the Altar Boy plug in on the vocal and guitars etc) were all excellent touches. The band definitely has a distinct Coheed influence but the song and the performance were excellent. They're all quite talented. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I definitely want to learn more about sourcing and using drum samples. In particular snare and kick of course. In producing my own projects, the type of music has never really called for it but more of the bands that I'm recording are on the modern heavy rock/metal/punk side and the samples would really go a long way as they did here. Not to mention that practically all my favorite records from my the 90's which were recorded and mixed by producers and mix engineers like Brendan O'Brien and Andy Wallace, all had at least snare samples on them. I'll have to check through your videos and see if you have any on implementing these kids of samples.

Hey, I'm a big fan of yours and have subscribed to your channel and have learned many great tips from it over the years. One small critique though, I find your drum mixes to be overly wide, and in the stereo spectrum it represents a drum kit that is unrealistically wide and unnatural. Have you ever tried to narrow the drum mix in anything you've done in order to open up the sides for the guitars and vocals? Just my thoughts, but what do I know, no one pays me to do mixing lol! Anyways, from one canuck to another, thank you for your channel and info, one of the best for audio mixing on KZfaq.

I have to say I don’t understand adding samples to those drums, especially the snare. It already sounds so good, you’re in a great room with great mics, and that drummer is super consistent and tight. If it were me I’d be fighting to make sure it sounded less like programmed drums, not more.

Whats the benefit of eq/compression on the way in of the recording? I don’t see any way that would be a smarter approach than eqing/compressing afterwards
@rome8180
@rome8180 Жыл бұрын
I can think of a few reasons. For one thing, some people enjoy committing to an effect upfront so that they don't waste a lot of time auditioning plugins later. Second, if you're going to be using outboard EQs and compressors it saves the step of having to run your recording back out into the outboard gear and then back into the DAW before you print it. Third, some musicians might enjoy hearing some processing on their signal as they perform. It might get a better performance out of them. Lastly, it can give a better picture of how all the instruments fit together if you have something close to the final sound as you record. The more work you do making things "fit" up front, the less you have to do in the mixing stage. But I feel like #1 is probably the biggest reason. I love to bounce my tracks with the effects on them as soon as possible for the same reason. Not only does it save CPU, but it means I can't backtrack.
@JoeyFTL

It's getting compression before conversion + the benefits of analog release character (if desirable)

It is a rock song, fair enough but sometimes too much of energy can overcook the music to a point of it being ruined, whereuin important sound detail is lost (kick/snares sound overprocessed for instance, ending up clouding the rest of the mix). different tastes surely. Hear this for comparison where far more complex drums are mixed but without ruining their ndividual sound kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a7OijNlzx7mRiYE.html .
