Whenever I see footage from the MLS something seems off. But I’m starting to realize that we are still watching the formation of clubs and the culture around those clubs. Which sort of is a view to the past, around the 1900’s when European clubs where growing their fandom and culture and has had time to settle and become what it is today

I think this is really interesting because I have a similar situation in India. The Indian Super League (ISL) when it first started had franchises - modelled on America and Australia as well as on the cricket league, the Indian Premier League - but over time, what we have seen is the fanbases grow and the rivalries grow organically and each with a culture of its own. I am a fan of Bengaluru FC which started first in 2013 and it became my team because I used to live in Bengaluru (or Bangalore for Westerners as it was back then) and I had no previous team to call my own. We were in the I-League previously (it used to be India's top league) and then moved into the ISL a few years later. Indian football, like some MLS teams, is still in its growing stages but now I can relate with what NYCFC fans are going through with the evolution of their team because as supporters we have also experienced our own ways of supporting the team - which mirrors more european style than South American because alll of us come from supporting English clubs mostly or European clubs in general. Now we have fierce rivalries with other clubs in India like with Kerala (see the incident in last year's playoffs for example), with Mohun Bagan (we lost the title to them on the last day) and with Chennaiyin (historical and political reasons). It's actually so cool for me to have seen the growth of our league and our game!

So you are becoming the Anthony Bourdain of football clubs and their communities. This is excellent.

I’m a South London Gooner who took in my first MLS game during my hols to NY in May. I travelled out to Harrison on the train and saw NYRB v Montreal. 2-1. Good day out and yeah interesting atmosphere to take in, full of drums too but not as close to them as you were Z

I know there's the "Always leave people wanting more" but with this style of video, I think you achieved that. When it ended, I felt like there was still 10-15 minutes of story left to tell. It reminded me of COPA90's best in a good way and that's clearly an inspiration. I absolutely understand wanting to do that kind of video. So good job. Looking forward to more like this. absolutely phenomenal video. you really authentically captured what supporters culture is like in the US. there's lots of growing pains and learning to be done in all fanbases, even the more established ones, but the mixture of latin american and european styles in the stadiums is something you wont find anywhere else in the world. eurosnobs and the like love to shit on the "quality" of this league and its fans but i've been to atmospheres in the US better than some I've been to while traveling in Europe. as you said in the video, the soccer fans here didnt just materialize from nothing, as an immigrant the passion runs in my blood, as for so many others. seriously great work on this video. But I can't leave a comment on a video about these teams without saying fuck red bull and fuck nycfc though. with their fanbase and disinterested ownership, red bull is an embarrassment as that one nyc fan said. But so is ALL of new york. new york soccer historically is a mess even going back to the cosmos. you would think there'd be a least one team in the most populous city in the country that has their shit together and has a real fanbase. i went to a Sacramento Republic game recently and that atmosphere was genuinely way better than when i went to yankee stadium. new york supporters culture has been in such a sad and almost hopeless state for years now and it's borderline embarrassing when you see the progress elsewhere around the country if you wanna see real passion come to the river end in chester PA we've been around since before the team even existed. if you dont know the story, come find out, and you can even watch the documentary (you can find it on youtube now) Philly is 100x realer than any of that plastic new york bullshit

As someone who studied History at postgrad, it's rare that we get to see something like the establishment of a major football league, and the social and cultural changes that brings, starting afresh and in such a detailed fashion. We get to see new clubs gather followings and fandoms, which one can use to re-imagine what it might have been like in Victorian England when towns and cities across the country were establishing clubs and planting those now-immovable community roots. It also gives a fascinating insight into those early attempts to export the game in the early 20th Century from Britain to mainland Europe, allowing for recontextualizing of the establishment of the game in places like Spain, France, Italy and Germany amongst other European nations, as well as in South America. Seeing rivalries like NYCFC and NJRB emerge in the spaces created by the establishment of the MLS gives people and idea of what it might have looked & felt like on the ground in Argentina as the social fabric of cities like Buenos Aires and Avellaneda adjusted to accommodate new football teams and the developing rivalries. It's a rare chance to see Ultra Culture forming an identity in real time. Well done, very interesting video!

That was a great video. Thank you! After living in Asia for half a decade, I've made many friends from the USA. When I first met some of these friends, I predicted that many Americans will start to pay far greater attention to football. Over my time out here, I have noticed more and more Americans saying tehy enjoy football and either have done for a while or that they are recent converts to the sport. It's fantastic to see, as an Englishman, and as a football fan, I've always wanted the USA to be apart of what so many around the world know and love. So it's exciting to see such growth in the states, whether organic or not it doesn't matter right now, eventually these clubs will create their own unique cultures that will be noticeable throughout the world, I'm sure of it.

Love this and love the video concept. Bringing more eyes to the MLS in this way is so creative, Z. I am part of the New England Revolutions Midnight Riders supporters group and going to these games is a blast. We also strongly dislike the Red Bulls because after all, as one of our chants goes, "Where in New York is New Jersey? I have no effing clue!"

Massive improvement from past IRL football doc eps, it looks like Z and Adler really nailed down their style on this one! The one thing they have to work on tho, imo, is Z's narrating. It's a bit too passive and David Attenborough-ish (a bit of an issue I also had in Armchair History), you can tell he is reading a script. That said, I have no doubt he will improve and manage to incorporate his usual energetic self into the reading, once that happens, this channel will be unstable! Great work guys!

Love this type of video Zealand. I would highly recommend coming up to the PNW, because the Vancouver Whitecaps, Seattle Sounders(My team) and Portland Timbers are great examples of MLS having a thriving fanbase with their own cultures and traditions, and would love to see your take on it, esepically considering each club's histories outside of MLS.

I visited this ground and done a video in March. I could not believe the atmosphere! Coming from Europe, I expected this to have a tourist feel to it, especially inside a huge baseball park but boy was I wrong. These fans behind the goal made me feel like I was in South America and really gave me a night I'll never forget! NYCFC Ole ole ole 🎶

Born in Jamaica raised here in Florida. I’m a fan of the big 3 US sports but as soon as Inter started up I became an instant fan, almost like something was missing. It felt so good having a local club again to go all in and support. There’s something special about cheering for you team and watching it grow from us getting finessed and restrictions to last years run with higuain to now having the likes of busquets Messi and alba it’s amazing to watch your team grow. Can’t wait for expanded salary caps and more new fans seeing that the MLS is a fun and intense league

Im a humble dude from New England who loves Liverpool and LAFC. I took a holiday to Charlotte recently for the first time in years just to see LAFC. The fandom may seem plastic but goddamnit do we care. To think of what I’ve been through in the last few years to this point and spending a lot of hard earned money based around an MLS team is unthinkable. I’ve only loved LAFC from day 1 because I was so upset with Revolution here locally. If that deserved me forking over cash it definitely means something.

Great video Z and brother Shannon. You can tell you were around some passionate fans there creating their own tribe. I think that some fans get swept along in the ultra movement and/or the hooligan element and that becomes more important to them than the success of the club. I recall being at an Asian Champions League match where Melbourne Victory had to win to stay in the tournament. The game was into injury time and the Victory were piling on the pressure. In my mind this should be a tense, nail-biting and passionate few minutes where you're gripped by the action. There were plenty fans feeling that but over in the Ultra's area there were fans doing a conga round the stadium with their back to the pitch. That makes it feel a bit like a fad, artificial but if it gets more fans along and generates income for the club then it's a good thing.

This is really well done, it reminds me of some old school copa90 videos. I love how you are honest about how weird MLS is compared to almost every other league in the world

I went to my first MLS game last year and got to march into Mercedes Benz Stadium with the AUFC ultras and even got to wave a flag for a few minutes. Seeing your footage gives me the same feelings again and makes me wanna go back, thanks Z ❤

Phenomenal video, love the narration, the editing, the topic at hand. I would gladly suggest you to try out covering the Montréal - Toronto rivalry, it's quite an interesting one, I believe. This feud has lasted for well over half a century and goes beyond soccer and sports in general, it helped to distinguish two societies and ways of thinking all within the same country. Québec vs Canada, French vs English, the Catholics vs the Protestants, seperation vs federation. CF Montréal vs Toronto FC would be scratching the surface of this intense sporting rivalry, when compared to an Alouettes vs Argonauts game or even the original rivalry between the Canadiens and the Maple Leafs.

This is awesome. That's why I love NYC FC. Lots of locals and lots of heart!! I started the follow the Metro Stars right before RBL bought then and moved them to NJ. I just never really connected with them after that. I haven't been to a game yet, but I cannot wait for the new stadium in the next few years. You have to do more of these btw. I knew about the ultras, I didn't know the culture was so deep and rich. Also, love the vid quality and the style. Bro-ham shoots very well.
