One detail that's little mentioned is that Lee tweets a photo of them all in the wardrobe. Whether that would be enough to affect anyone's fate, indict Pip, or even if it would've sent from an old manor house is up for debate, though I find the photo itself quite haunting in how it's framed and lit considering this is likely a photo of everyone's final moments...

It's interesting that this is effectively one of the darkest episodes and yet one of the most comedic. In fact I was struggling to think of many episodes which were more comedic than this, Death Be Not Proud, Wuthering Heist and Zanzibar are very comedic, there are definitely plenty of jokes throughout the series but often the humour is downplayed in favour of the mystery element or drama, but this story despite having arguably some of the darkest themes also has comedy throughout.
@WeeLin

It's amazing that they hit the balance between darkness and comedy so well. Though I guess they'd developed a knack for it after League of Gentlemen and Psychoville. Still not something many writers could pull off.

EYYY it’s awesome that you’re going back to the older episodes. I always found Sardines to be the sort of benchmark No.9 episode, anything better than this I consider a success and anything weaker I consider a bit of a weak episode, a bit like how treat Dr No for the Bond franchise. Sardines is admittedly one of my lesser favourite episodes, but is still good. It does feel a bit rough around the edges in terms of the claustrophobic atmosphere and large cast, but is still fun and the twist is really good.
@WeeLin
@WeeLin Ай бұрын
I agree, it's a good benchmark, and also the best place to start watching No 9. I mean, technically you can watch them in any order, and I'll often recommend a particular episode to someone I know based on what I think they'll like, but whenever I'm asked in general which episode to start with I'll always say Sardines.

I think it's one of the greater twists of the show to be honest. Its far from obvious but it's also possible to get an idea of what might be the case before it's fully revealed which is the sort of twist I like.

Nice review. Some interesting aspects you bring out His innocence wasn't spared so he didn't spare the innocents. Not an ince breaer but a fire starter. I imagine how this was conceived in the writers' minds. V effective. I can't remember if this is the first insid no 9 I saw, I think it probably was, thinking back. Dark secrets that slowly reveal and a twist.

Great review and like the episode , managed to pack everything in. Lots of "Britishness" on show, especially in the not saying stuff or in sweeping it under the carpet. I don't think they made it to Narnia as it was a lot warmer at the end but that Ian took the Pip (sorry). Cheers and catch you on the next one for a quiet night in.
@WeeLin
@WeeLin Ай бұрын
It is a very British attitude, isn't it? Works well here I think, both in how it's played for comedy and in all the horrors that come out after being repressed for decades. They'd have been better off in Narnia!
@afjkernow1808
@afjkernow1808 Ай бұрын
Well that was fascinating. Superb cast, really effective portrayal British appreciation of awkwardness and the sensitive handling of a serious issue. All these factors demonstrate why Inside no 9 should be a set text for writers. In less than 30 minutes you have enough plot, backstop and characterisation for a whole six part series. The economy of the writing is breathtaking. This is what kept us returning. 'Ensweetie' is hilarious. I really enjoyed your review and the points you make about forced jollity, nature of Pip's plan and revenge affecting innocents and the links to Plodding On. Looking forward to the next.

@WeeLin Ай бұрын
Thanks! It really is a writing masterclass for all of the reasons you just mentioned. So many layers to it, which is why I think it holds up to many, many rewatches! Plus they're able to handle some incredibly dark topics AND still make us laugh. Pure genius.

I reckon you have to be posh to even attempt playing sardines. Try finding a single place where 10 people can hide in a council house.
@WeeLin
@WeeLin Ай бұрын
That's probably very true. I think the only time I ever played it as a kid, it ended up being not much of a challenge, what with a load of legs sticking out from under the bed, behind the couch or bodies that kept falling out of a cupboard (assuming there was cupboard space at all to begin with), which were the only available hiding places for more than one child.

It's interesting that I've read a lot of fans consider 'Sardines' not a good episode to start on. If you're introducing someone to 'Inside No.9' yet, like you, I was recommended it when it first aired - my bestie, not my sister who says she can't watch it because she gets too scared! - & so it wasn't like there was a choice. For me, it will always feel like a natural start, as you say a literal baptism of fire, which absolutely sets the viewer up to expect the unexpected. And one aspect of casting I don't think you mentioned re: Timothy West. He starred in one of the most well-known episodes of 'Tales of the Unexpected,' 'Royal Jelly,' which was also incredibly dark & left the viewer feeling uncomfortable in the episode's wake. Given the casting choices made in this series, I'm sure that was very deliberate (this may be well known - maybe it's covered in a book or interview somewhere & I'm over-explaining something obvious). And 'Sardines' certainly felt very connected to that anthology series, almost like a baton being handed over.
@WeeLin
@WeeLin Ай бұрын
I have a few friends that struggle a bit with the darker episodes, or avoid them altogether. One of them stopped watching the show after The Devil of Christmas, which was admittedly extremely dark and shocking. But, dark as it gets, I've never heard them say that Sardines was too much for them, and I think it works as a pretty good benchmark for the tone of the show. That's a weirdly sweet thought on the casting of Timothy West! I'm yet to watch Tales of the Unexpected, and I know it was quite a strong influence on No 9 so I'm looking forward to that.

I've also started re-watching all the IN9 eps from the beginning!! Sardines is arguably my fave ep, and I've watched it several times. I've been thinking a lot recently about the actual engagement party. Were those the only guests? Or is it just that they are the only guests who agreed to play the game? It seems odd that Rebecca doesn't have any actual friends at the party. Or maybe (as Carl says) she's kind of a bitch and doesn’t have any? Do "local people" avoid the entire family because of the scandal? If there are other party guests, it's possible someone might smell smoke or hear screaming and save the trapped guests. Or does Pip plan on getting rid of everyone in the house? Regarding Real Ian. My theory is maybe Pip rigged it so Ian missed his train and had to take a later one? Thereby pushing back Jeremy's arrival to the house? The point is that Jeremy HAS to arrive late to the party. Pip's plan hinges on him volunteering to be "It" and choosing to hide in the wardrobe. If Jeremy had seen him at any point before the game started, his cover would have been blown. It is a bit weird that Pip has to re-introduce himself to everyone as they enter the wardrobe as he must have introduced himself as Ian at the start of the game. But I guess he's so boring, everyone instantly forgot him!?! Sorry for all the deep dive questions, but I can't help but think about this stuff after watching so many times. I also found another tenuous link to Sardines in Plodding On. After Robin Askwith pees while talking to Reece, he doesn't flush the toilet. If it's yellow, let it mellow...
