Inside Norway's $47 Billion Floating Highway

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration is in the process of creating the world’s first floating highway. The Coastal Highway Route E39 will cut down a 21 hour travel time between the Norwegian cities of Kristiansand in the south and Trondheim in the north by at least half through the elimination of seven different ferry crossings. These crossings will be replaced with bridges, tunnels, and the innovative new Submerged Floating Tube Bridges which give the Coastal road its nickname. But Norway has its work cut out for it, as a project of this size and scale with the use of the floating tunnels has yet to be completed anywhere else in the world-- and attempting the historic roadway project will cost more than $47 billion.
With many fjords to safely traverse, the project is getting help from Universities, researchers and engineers all over the country. Though the project isn’t expected to be completed until 2050, they’ve already got a head start on constructing their first floating tunnel called the Rogaland Fixed Link or Rogfast. While the construction has allowed them to work out some kinks, it’s also cost $2 billion so far-- and that budget is growing. Norway aims to maintain its pristine natural beauty with these hidden highways, but first they have to figure out how travelers can remain safe at 150 feet underwater. Check out our video for all the details on this innovative new highway-- and how the rest of the world may soon follow in Norway’s footsteps.

From the perspective of someone playing Simcity or Civilization, this is obviously really fascinating and exciting. From the perspective of someone who's terrified of drowning or being trapped underwater, I'd be more than a little anxious that something terrible happened (e.g., natural disaster, terrorist attack) causing me to die a watery grave.

you need to play Subnautica. And if you intend to do, do yourself a favor and never look anything up about that game. If you look it up you'll spoil 50% of its magic. Many players - myself included - wish to get their memory wiped out so they can experience the wonders of that underwater-y game all over again. I don't guarantee that you'll cure your water phobias after playing the game, but you will definitely look at the oceans differently :)

Part of this is already open. Ryfast (around Stavanger) is open. It’s part of Rogfast (the stretch talked about here). We drove this earlier this year and it was SCARY, not going to lie. Just the idea of driving underwater is scary to me. What if there’s an accident? However, it went by really quickly and the tunnel was amazingly built. I can’t wrap my head around how engineers even come up with this sort of stuff.

@@axz2694 depends my friend. Depends if you watch the news everyday and form an opinion from that, or if you do your due diligence in research and understand narratives and agendas. You’re right, people within can hurt our country, but simple common sense says if you can’t control the chaos and lack of integrity in your own home, don’t unlock your doors for potential threats to come through and steal and do harm to your fellow family members... it’s really quite simple, but agendas make it seem complex as if we aren’t humane or understanding or loving or caring. If you don’t agree with a border, let your neighbor onto your property. Leave your doors unlocked at night. In fact, keep all your lights on and your doors wide open. Let people do what they want. Who cares if it’s our property right? - common sense lacks, thanks to people being misled ... by people without common sense. 😑
