A correction: Kalki 2898AD isn't a Punjabi language movie. It's a Telugu language movie. Jatt & Juliet 3 is a Punjabi movie though. So you probably made a mistake about the information for Kalki 2898AD in your notes.

In case you’re curious Dan, that Japanese A Quiet Place Poster isn’t a random giant cat, it’s an actual 3-d electronic billboard of a cat that exists in Shinjuku, Tokyo. It’s somewhat famous so would be recognizable for some people in Japan.

Keep in mind that AQP:DO is rated Pg-13 while Furiosa is rated R. Ratings do play a role in the amount of ticket sales so I don’t think it’s really a fair comparison.

This is what I've been saying about Furiosa for a while. I don't think it's necessarily all about "people don't want to go to movies" and maybe more about "people just weren't interested in Furiosa" for whatever reason. Probably a combination of the two, but still.

This weekend I saw Kinds of Kindness and Thelma. I'm surprised Kinds of Kindness wasn't higher on the top 10 this week, because at my theater it was a nearly sold-out show, the guy at the box office even commented on how popular it was as I was getting my ticket. But I guess it wasn't in enough theaters to compete. Thelma was on a smaller, less packed screen, but I definitely think it deserves some attention. It was one of the better movies I've seen this year, and it's disappointing to think it's probably going to be ignored in favor of the high profile franchise films coming out around the same time. BTW, that Quiet Place poster is depicting a famous 3D digital billboard in Shinjuku.

Inside Out 2 and A Quiet Place: Day One doing so well kinda shows that original ideas are VERY important to invest in. Because when you do that, the amount of money you can make on sequels and spin-offs increases MASSIVELY opens up.

It's great that A Quiet Place: Day One & Inside Out 2 had a Barbienheimer type weekend thanks to A Quiet Place: Day One outperforming expectations and darn near taking 1st place. That trend should continue through the holiday weekend although DM4 could cut Inside Out 2's box office in half as both will appeal to the same audience.

In addition to accounting for inflation, I think the "today" numbers for older films should be adjusted for population growth since the pool of ticket buyers keeps growing. I did the math with examples on my Twitter account in 2022, but it's crazy to calculate what Gone With The Wind, Star Wars, E.T. or Titanic would have made in today's dollars if the purchase rate increased at the same proportion as the population increase. Example (using 2022 stats): Star Wars (1977 release only) sold 137.8 million tickets ($307.2 million from $2.23 per ticket) when the domestic population was 220.2 million (US only). Converted to 2022 population numbers (US + Canada) that's 232.0 million tickets or an inflation+population adjusted take of $2.262 BILLION (domestic ONLY)! And that number would be EVEN HIGHER today!

I checked, and there was a similar gap to Kung Fu Panda. 8 years from the previous Kung Fu Panda movie. 7 years since DM3 if you don't count the Minions movie released in 2022. This doesn't mean it will do bad, but I don’t have high expectations.

Just so y‘all know, the next TWO Pixar films are originals.🤦‍♂️ You can‘t make sequels if you don‘t create new IP, so of course Disney/Pixar won‘t stop doing originals, just like they did the past 4 years: Onward Rays The Last Dragon Soul Luca Turning Red Encanto Strange World Wish Elemental BOTH, originals AND sequels are needed if you want your business to do well…, sequels, in general, tend to perform stronger at the box office, which is important for the theatrical business, but also for future original projects.

It really really makes me hopeful for the future that when Beyond the Spider-Verse comes out that movie will also make 1 billion give them the first two didn’t. Also really happy for A Quiet Place, a new franchise receiving its well earned success and I hope to see more from it.

Based on cumulative domestic box office chart and quick math in my head. Ticket sales are down about 40% from before 2020. No calculator app on iPad to check my math. I’m curious how many movie theaters have closed since 2020. Both independent and big guys like AMC. No idea if there is a way to track that but would be curious to see it.

I have my doubts about Horizon doing well. I just got back from seeing that, A Quiet Place Day 1, and Kinds of Kindness. If you are looking for a 2.5-3 hour exercise of directorial overindulgence, Kinds of Kindness is the better film by a bit. I understand the TV mini-series accusations for Horizon. However, A Quiet Place Day 1 was the best of the three by quite a lot. I really enjoyed it. Curious to see what Ghost does for the finally. They are still doing a showing per day at my theater.

So when Mario hit a billion, there was everybody saying it was because it was a mutli-generational IP, and all this talk about whether it was a quality film or not. I think it might more be about the market. Every time animations get these large amounts they really the only big animate movie that was going to be release that year and all the kids(&family) flock to go see it.

Dan, I Would Request You To Watch Kill This Weekend - It is the most violent and goriest action film of india, it has really got great reviews from the film festival audiences and A 96% on Rotten Tomatoes as of now & imagine it was so good that lionsgate picked up the usa distribution rights for it after it's first screening & this can truly be the best action film of the year along with furiosa & it is emotionally driven as well, watch it with an packed audience and even the title card drop is also worth it. I Promise You if you love action films you will like KILL.

It's amusing how fickle the movie industry is. Movies have been tanking left and right, loads of flops. I've never seen so many failures at the box office. Disney has seen one disaster after another on the big screen and small screen. But 2 movies do well (Bad Boys 4, Inside Out 2) and all of a sudden Hollywood is back! It's all good, forget everything that has been happening for months because we've made some money. Disney is back (probably hasn't learned a thing) because one movie made some money guy! 😅🙄

Be on the lookout for the outside chance that the fall guy comes back into the to 10 Next week... Looks like Universal is doing another Jurassic/Firestarter forced pairing again. Mostly at drive-ins... They are pairing it with Disposable Me 4!!

Dan, one idea, you know, I feel like the era multiple big budget movies a year started in the 2000s ou 20010s, I would love to see in the graphic of road to recovery how was the average (adjust for inflation) of the 90s for example. Because I maybe wrong, because is just an impression, but I think part of the fall of the box office has a little to do with a bubble that was create by super heroes movies and increase by the success of the MCU. Anyway, just an idea.
