Quite possibly one of my favorite videos of yours, James. I found the festival fascinating, endearing and treated with respect. Who are we, who do not live there or have lived there, to judge what appears to be a joyous celebratory event, so joyous a tradition, in fact, that it has persevered for so many years. We may not understand it fully, and there is no need for us to. No one is harmed, and it unites people, family and strangers alike, together. I revel, from afar, in their joy and tradition, and thank you for sharing some of it with us. Cheers!

I am not from Spain but having gone to Spain every year except during covid I have learned so much about the country, its culture & traditions, its people & history. Acceptance is the key. And to accept it is to embrace it. ❤ from California.

What a perceptive observation. I felt exactly the same way. I am fascinated, after following James' work for five years now, to see him share this sort of complexity, beyond the enthusiasm of the more rookie tourist/traveler. My husband (who happened to be of Puerto Rican heritage with some influences of Spain from the culture) and I had our honeymoon in Spain, and I found it an intense place. As a "fugitive" Irish Catholic, the influences here strike me as very deep and compelling. This tradition to me is as wonderfully alien as anything the space explorers in Bradbury's "The Martian Chronicles" might have encountered. And this is a very localized event, even among the Spanish general populations.

As always, I love the Spanish cultural traditions all over its country that continue to bring the entire community together in celebration. In Spain, a communal lifestyle is so important, with its aim to bring its citizens together in celebration and by having the inclusion of everyone, no matter their age. I am continuously moved by this and I tend to get emotional whenever I see the level of dedication, costumes, music, food and joy that Spaniards exhibit when they celebrate a tradition of their past. I feel so connected living here and appreciate that I get to belong too.

Yes! To all of what you wrote, Mizgina (except for the living in Spain and belonging part.) I was surprisingly moved to tears by the participants joy that James was able to capture in his engaging, informative video. As an active atheist, I am certain the notion of there being evil in babies which needs driving out is horrible nonsense but I am equally certain that we are diminished if we lose our traditions. Whilst the religious side of this festival is, in my personal view, misguided, none of us know everything and we should avoid the pretence that out biases are facts. If such tradition helps to hold a community together, I support it 100%. Thanks James for one of your very best. You changed my ignorant outsider's view of an event by educating me.

Yes I would, because tradition dictates and this close bond with the people of the town makes the festival what it is. I am surprised that Rome put their stamp of approval being that at that time all were traditional Roman Catholics. Like I said so much to unpack here.

This was very interesting. At first I thought I would never let someone jump over my baby. I ama quite a worrier. Then I realized the jump was over the short end of the mattress. Maybe it is the gymnastics I did as a child, where we had friends line up like logs next to each other while we ran and then dove over them doing a head roll. I don't think that would be allowed now. I realized an adult can easily jump that small distance.
