There has been a rare chance for people in Germany to go behind the wire of a former RAF and British Army base in Gütersloh. The British handed the site to the German authorities in 2016 but it remained a restricted area until June last year, when local people were allowed in for the first time after 80 years...

What wonderful RAF base. Served here from 1962-65 and enjoyed every moment of my time there. The German people I found to be very friendly and enjoyed touring as much of Germany as possible. I visited the base again in 2012 and was very upset with the decline of the base. Thank You.

My first tour of RAF Germany was RAF Laarbruch 79-82: 1 Sqn RAF Regiment. My second tour was RAF Gutersloh 1984 - 1987: 33 Wing, RAF Regiment. I was very lucky to have two tours of RAF Germany within such a small time frame. Enjoyed both for different reasons.

18 years in Germany, went through Gutersloh many times on deployments out of BFG. Remember the mounted frames, of all the then (80's) Army cap badges, never thought I would meet the RAF Officer, who put them together (He was retired and I was seeing his daughter, (long story). Then back in 94? attached to 1 AAC, from a 3 year posting in Hildesheim, was posted there for a further year. Good times. Sad to see it all go.

Very sad to see the Officers' Mess in such a bad state. There's much history there (both RAF and Luftwaffe); it really should be a protected building imo. For those who've not been, there's a keller bar with cartoons painted on the walls by Luftwaffe pilots and a small room at the top of the tower (Göring's Room) which used to contain photos and souvenirs from the Luftwaffe days. It has an unusual feature. The large central beam in the low ceiling is actually in two parts, divided in the middle and invisibly hinged at the ends where it meets the walls. The central join is concealed by an iron light fitting. There is a metal ring hidden under a hinged flap in the wooden floor. This is connected by cables routed under the floor and behind the walls and ceiling to a mechanism which, when the ring is pulled, allows the two halves of the beam to drop down about 25cm (from memory) with a loud 'clunk'. Built presumably by the German officers, it was an elaborate response to Göring's habit of telling war stories to his junior pilots and ending with the phrase 'If this is not true, may this beam above our heads bend', or words to that effect. One can only imagine the reaction when this was used for the fist time! It was still working flawlessly in the early 80s when I was stationed there.

I remember that beam, and hearing the story behind it, in the early 80s when visiting the mess. I scrolled through the comments here to see if it would be mentiond. And there you were.
@LesPucesLtd
@LesPucesLtd Жыл бұрын
I remember the mess, and the Göring room from the mid 90's. The beam was working then. My husband was an Officer and we loved our time in Gütersloh. I particularly remember an Orient Express themed ball at this mess. We started in the hallway with London - think jellied eels and cockles, cockney singing with piano accompaniment, pigeons and lots of smog/smoke from the steam train. We had our tickets punched on the station and went on our travels around each room. I think the main dining room was Paris with an Eiffel tower, Venice was in there somewhere with a string quartet... and somehow we ended up in Istanbul with coffee, Turkish delight sweets and belly dancers! I think there was some sort of fairground outside and lots of food stands... the idea was to keep moving and exploring. Truly magical. I do hope that something is done to preserve the Mess as well as the second Officer's Mess at Mansergh barracks on the other side of town. I still have German friends in Gütersloh and lots of fond memories. We try and visit every year.

I served at RAF Gutersloh 1962-63 in the Signals Section housed in the Station Administrative block and also in the Air Traffic Signals Office house in the Control Tower. At that time we flew Hunters and Westland Helicopters. Gutersloh was a nice, friendly town, and I recall there was a small replica Berlin Wall construction just in front of the railway station - to remind the townsfolk of how Berlin was divided by the communist regime of East Germany. Thankfully the Berlin wall came down in 1989 and I expect the Gutersloh memorial was also taken down.

@COIcultist 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know if it is based on it, but obviously de Havilland had massive experience in producing the Mosquito, or actually massive experience producing previous wooden aircraft, not so much Mosquitos in 1941. Ah, I see the later nightfighter/trainers had a cockpit based on the Mosquito. It would be wartime shortages anyway considering the development time frame of the Vampire. I do despair of the research or depth of knowledge of people who should know better, there is an IWM film on the Blackburn Buccaneer that is so bad I would expect better of a school age teenager with access to the interweb.
